Monday Night Sketch + Chill

Jason Nicholas sketches a barn live, starting from the roof and working loose and wonky on purpose. He uses watercolors, acrylic ink, pens, and colored pencils in autumn colors, pulling inspiration from Eric Sloan's An Age of Barns and keeping the whole thing casual and imperfect.

Hey! Happy Monday— um... October 13th, 2025. I'm Jason with The Inspired Life, where I love sketching architecture, design, um, sketching just anything. Um, yeah, it's just fun for me to capture things on paper, get things out of my head onto paper, and, you know, process the world around me one line at a time. So if you've been watching me the past few days or so, I've been live streaming and sketching Barns. I love barns. I think they're really cool, especially old wonky barns. Here's some of the sketches I've done this week. It's a quick show and tell. Boom. And the colors I'm using are really— they're all inspired by the fall. I love the foliage, the oranges, the yellows, the the, um, reds, greens, just really beautiful colors this time of year. So I thought I'd come on tonight and let's do another barn sketch. I'm going to show you a cool book that I'm looking at using as a reference for this one. And, um, here, I'll show it to you. I love, love, love this book. It's called An Age of Barns. By Eric Sloan. Um, really cool book. It's got some detailed hinges in here. It has— I love the, um, really nice, beautiful, beautiful drawings in here as well. Different styles of barns, round barns. How cool, how cool are they? Pretty awesome, right? So I'm just gonna— let's just grab one maybe from this page. And I'm just gonna use it as just a loose kind of reference, just something to throw a few lines down with. And let's do that. Let me just kind of prop that up. Props to the book. All right, let's do some sketching. Let me know how your day's going, let me know where you're watching from, and if you have any questions and/or comments. Um, I like to check the stream as I'm sketching. Cool. And if you're watching on Instagram, feel free to switch over to YouTube where you can see the entire, entire screen. All right, let's do this barn. Um, just gonna just sketch. Typically when I start, when I sketch buildings, I like to do kind of work from the top down to the bottom, so I like to do the roof areas first. And we're just going to do this quick, fast, loose, and wonky because that's just the style I like. And you know, when you have, uh, when you have in your brain that you're going to be sketching loose and wonky, you take the pressure off that you need to be perfect with what you're creating. Sometimes it's that pressure that holds us back and kind of blocks us from, from creating because we're afraid to throw down any kind of lines. Maybe the barn's looking kind of something like this. All right, we got some lines down on there. It's literally all, uh, I think I'm going to throw down right now just for an outline here. Maybe there's a door down here, kind of barn door. Alright, cool. And let's just throw down some color. So I'm gonna dip into my watercolors here. I'm gonna grab some orange. And I'm actually going to go really, uh, throw down some color pretty quickly here. Oops, I need to clean off that. There we go. Let's see, you got some yellows, oranges, I have some greens. Um, you know, I'm going to throw down some red, uh, some red watercolor. I don't usually use red watercolor. I'm not a fan of it. I don't know why. For red, I'll typically use a Pilot Precise Pen or Sharpie Creative Marker, but let's just throw some red on here and see what happens. All right, so you can see, I think, some fall colors kind of happening here on screen. Which is really my intention. I just want to throw some colors down tonight on this. Let me zoom in a little bit. Maybe that's better. All right, cool. I'm gonna grab some of this— I like to call this Taxi Cab Yellow. I like this color. Actually, let's go, uh, let's throw some Reflex Rose. I love this color, it is so intense, so Fun. It's fairly dry in my room, so this, this is acrylic ink and it dries— it's drying super fast here. All right, I'm liking the colors on this. It looks awesome. I think this will dry really nicely. I'm gonna pull a little bit of color off of here, just give a little more variation on the, um, yeah, it looks better. Maybe a little bit up here as well, just lift a little bit off. Let's break out this red pen. I'm going to make this a stone foundation on here, so I don't know if my Sharpie is going to work because it's kind of damp. Uh, we'll give it a try. I really like the way this color is drying here. Let me, um, show you kind of like what's happening in here. It's really interesting. I'm going to add some, um, hatch lines for shadows. Let's see, I would usually use my Sharpie, but it's still a little too wet for the Sharpie, so Uh, let's try this pen. Do like purple, purple hatch lines. See how that works. Zoom in. Alright, let's throw some colored pencil on here. This is fun.
