Monday Night Sketching

Jason Nicholas sketches a Statue of Liberty torch on kraft paper, testing Posca pens, Sharpies, and Crayola pencils to compare how they perform on thin paper. He talks about sketching as daily practice for relaxation and confidence, mentions his 2026 focus words "consistency" and "clarity," and shows off a Bambu Lab 3D printer he's using for a student project.

Hey, happy February 9th, 2026. I gotta work on these beginnings. Happy February 9th, 2026. Is that better? I'm tired, but I wanted to come on and do my sketching for today. I'm tired because I just did some VR cardio stuff. So if I'm out of breath, that's why my name is Jason. I'm here with the Inspired Life where I love sketching, especially architecture. Sketching for me is, I guess it's become a way of life. It does so many things. It transforms me, it helps me to relax, it can pump me up. It's a way to capture a moment in time. It does so many awesome things. Sketching is an amazing creative tool. So hope you join me on the Inspired Life on this stream and in the future, be sure to hit like and subscribe and all that stuff and I'll share some tips, tricks and mindset stuff about sketching and life in general. I'm all about positivity. Alright, so tonight we're just gonna throw down some sketches. I am sketching in my Soho Urban Artist sketch craft sketchbook. Got a bunch of sketches in here. Here's a cool one I did last night. So just kind of, you know, it's nothing specific. I was just kind of throwing lines down, some colors down. Yeah. And so for some reason I always. Not always, but lots of times these kind of abstract sketches will turn into some kind of skyline in my brain. So some kind of city or skyline. So that was kind of fun. But tonight I thought I'd do maybe a Statue of Liberty torch. So we'll do some of that on this paper. I don't know if I've done one in my craft paper before, so let's give it a try. I also broke out. I have not used some of these at all and I have not used some of these in a long time. I have Posca paint pens in here, so I just pulled this bin out. There's other random stuff. So I thought maybe we'd dive into this bin and play around with some paint pens. Again, I have not used these in a while. Some of them have not even been opened. I started using Sharpie Creative markers and I love, love, love those. But I thought we'd try something different. Alright, if you have any questions, comments, let me know. We're gonna do some sketching. Let's see. I just want to make sure I'm centered ish. If you hear that noise in the background, I have. My 3D printer is going. I'm printing a project for One of my students, she couldn't get it done in school today, so I offered to do it at home. And it's a little bit loud, so sometimes it makes really weird. I like this for kind of sketching with the fine lines, so that's cool. Oops. I am just throwing things everywhere. All right, we have a Posca paint pen that looks like it might be the same color. Let's test this one out. So this is a Posca paint pen by Uni. This is aqua. Aqua green is the color. All right, let's throw some of this down. Just curious to compare it. Very, very similar color to the Sharpie creative marker. I like the way the sharp. The Sharpie creative marker feels on the paper, But it does the same basic task. Let's try this color. It's like a salmon coral pink. We're gonna throw some coral pink down. Let me know your day's going. Feel free to say hi in the comments. If you're watching in ninja mode and hiding in the background, that's cool. It's all good. It's always fun to say hello. It. I don't. One thing I'm not liking about the Posca pens is the way the tip of the pen is kind of. It's kind of tearing away at the paper a little bit as I'm sketching. Maybe it's a rough texture on the tip of the pen compared to the creative markers. So I have to be careful not to push it down too hard on the paper because it's kind of tearing it away slowly. What we got here? This is another Sharpie pen. These are water based, so that's cool. If I was doing this on watercolor paper, I could kind of bleed them a little bit. This is very thin paper, so I don't want to really bleed. Add water to it. I don't think this one's been used at all. So see if we can get the paint coming out. Sam. It. Sam. It. All right. I think we need a dark. We need a. We're just gonna grab blue. I think maybe we'll throw some blue on. So I want to use the blue just to pull out some of these shapes a little bit here. One thing about these torch sketches, they are never the same sketch twice, which is so fun. They're all definitely unique originals, and they're. They're fun. I love giving these away when I go into the city. Hopefully it's warm enough this weekend. I can go. Been so cold that I have not ventured in. Right. So you can see that Blue is just starting to pull out some of the shapes a little bit more. Right. It's fun to layer different colors on this, on these sketches. Let's do throw some black down. What is this pen? What is this one? I have no idea. This was in that bin I pulled out. Actually. It looks like it's ready for the garbage, so that one does not work. It's. All right. I think this one might be done. Zoom out. I feel like I need something in here. Yellow. Let's grab some yellow. Let's do it. Their brain's saying yellow, so we're gonna listen to the brain today. Usually when I pick colors, I kind of just listen to my gut. Whatever my gut's saying is what I'll pick up and grab and kind of throw down. It. All right, cool. So I'm liking it. I. I kind of like the yellow there. It was looking too plain. Let me zoom in a little bit. Hey, Jen's in the house. Jen is so good to see you. How are you? I hope all's well. Hope you're having a great, great Monday. You are not too late, because I did not say what time I was going on. So you are all good. Appreciate you popping in. I kind of like it. I feel like. You know what? I'm gonna throw in some black Sharpie. I want to pull out some things in here a little bit more, and I think that that should wrap it up. So let's pull out the Sharpie. So here's what I'm thinking. Posca pens versus the creative marker based on using it on this sketch, on this paper. Yeah. Sharpie. Sharpie wins for me. I feel like the Posca has a rough point, a rough tip on it, and this rough tip here was kind of tearing away the paper a little bit as I was. So this might be better on thicker paper, but it's fun to play with and try. I feel like the tips on these are softer and a little more pliable and forgiving, so it's not tearing the paper away. So it's not that bad. Excuse my coffee. Oh, hey. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate that. You're awesome. Really, you're awesome. Awesome. It's been quiet in the chat today. I don't even know if anybody. I see two thumbs up, so I don't think. I don't know if anybody was watching. So it's all good. It's about. It's about discipline, right? It's about consistency. Consistency is something I'm working on this year, something I need to be Much better at. In all. All areas of my life. Yeah, that was one of my. I don't use New Year's resolutions. I like to use words. So one of my words for 20, 26 is consistency. The other one's clarity, clarity, consistency. So, yeah. So showing up day in and day out, practicing, you know, whether it's online or offline, sketching something helps to build creative confidence. It's a way, like I always say to you guys, it's a way for me to get out of my brain onto paper, get things out of my brain onto paper, change my state of being. All that. All those. All that shifting that can happen. Just letting this dry for a sec. It's actually pretty dry. That's one of the other cool things about acrylic markers is, look, that was there from before, but this is. This is dry. So I can literally come back and draw at it. Draw at it. Draw on top of it. Now Jen says, I was in an art gallery that had 21 artists, including photography, yesterday. Very cool. Jason, that's awesome. Love that. Did you see any artwork that connected with you? Something that you're like, oh, my God, that's awesome, or what the heck is that mean? I'd love to know what connected with you. That is so cool. Yeah. I needed some water. All right, let's throw down some detail on here. I want to. And when I say detail, I'm not talking about. How do I say this? Minuscule minou. Minutia. Is that the word minutia? I've always wanted to use that word, minutia. For me, detail is simply just throwing down some more lines to pull out some shapes on top of these colors. How do you spell minutia? It's like minute M, I, M, I, n. It's like a spelling bee. Minutia. M, I, N, U, T, A, E. Minutia. I. I don't even know if that's right. My new minutia is one of those words. When I look at it, you're like, huh. All right, cool, right? So I'm just kind of pulling out some of that curvy curviness here. I like it. Let's kind of wrap this around here a little bit. And then I want to pull out these. Kind of contours. So contour are these curved lines just to give a little bit of curviness to this side of the torch. I. I think I'm going to go back to here. I'm going to go back here this spring to the Statue of Liberty. Maybe I'll do the cruise. The tour from. Man, where does a tour leave from? Battery park. Maybe I took one from New Jersey a few years ago. I'd like to try to take the tour from the legit tour. You got to be careful when you're buying tickets for the Statue of Liberty cruise. New York City. Hit up my friend Sifa on the NYC walking show for pro tips. I know that there are a lot of scammers selling tickets to these Statue of Liberty cruises, so I gotta hit. Hit him up as well or go back and watch some of his videos to make sure if I do that, I'm using a legit service because I might buy a ticket and maybe their Statue of Liberty is. I don't know. Who the heck knows? I don't know where, where I could end up if it's not the legit one. How to get on that topic, I have no idea. All right, cool. Right, so just kind of scribbling, pulling out some of the shapes on here. Minutia. Oh, I spelled it. Did I spell it wrong? Minute I. A minute I. A. That looks right. Abstract paint is with 3D paint. That's cool. 3D paint. That sounds fun. So when you say 3D paint, I'm guessing the paint had a lot of texture. Texture to it. Right? Let's try. I'm gonna take out some. Yeah. Aha. Here we go. I don't. I have a Crayola. This is from school, the Crayola pencil. Honestly, Crayola color pencils aren't don't really cut it for me, so I must have grabbed that from school. Prismacolors go on like, like butter, so smooth, so silky. I just don't like the Crayola. I'm. I guess I'm being a color pencil snob. Usually I'm not snobby, but I just love the way this, this pencil goes down on here. And I got to be careful because I'm getting close to the point of over working this, and I may have already hit it. The man says as he keeps going. Yeah, texture like a bird with 3D wings. That sounds amazing. Very, very cool. Yeah, I, I, I think I'm heading. Hitting up the Met finally this weekend maybe. And I've been. The cold weather has been stopping me from going to the city, so I've been dying to go to the Met on a Saturday or Sunday morning. I have like member hours so I can go before the crowds get there. So. Yeah, I love looking around at art and being inspired. So, Jen, sounds like Maybe you were inspired by some of this 3D art. That is so cool. Love it. Do you ever. Do you ever do any art, Any drawing or painting or what kind of things do you like to make? Where does your create creativity take you? I think this one might be done. Guys. Let me zoom out. So if you can tell this is the Statue of Liberty torch, I've done my job. That's my goal. Right. I'm never trying to duplicate, replicate. I just want to capture the character of the spirit, the essence, and not the minutia. Minutiae. M I N U T I a. Minutia. That's our word for the day. That is not what I'm doing with these. It's the overall, the essence. Trying to be fancy schmancy. It's not working, is it? Cool. Do I have any other liberty torches in here? I don't even know. Hmm. Let's just flip through. Just curious. I do have one here. I have this one here that I'm using as a reference. That's that one I'll be taking into the city with me. I don't know if I did any in this little lighthouses, Some Brooklyn stuff. No. So I don't think. I think this is the first liberty torch I've done on craft paper. And that's Kraft. Kraft, which is this brownish paper bag kind of color. And I love sketching on it. I got it right. Thanks to my friend Chip, who came up with this. I gotta write it on this one too. I'm slacking. We'll zoom in. Really cool. If I could say we'll zoom in and my camera automatically zooms, that would be fun. So I like to write, be. The light. Be the light. Shout out to Chip, who said, you know, he gave me the idea to write that on these liberty torches. Got assign it too. Put a nice heart and we'll put Jason. And then I'll usually put the year Boom boom chakalaka. Singing is your heart. Oh, you love dancing and singing. Love that. That's so cool. Cool. What kind of dancing and singing do you do? That's awesome. It's right on here. Be the light. Heart. Oops. There we go. Be the light. 20, 26. Ta da. Awesome sauce. Let's put these next to each other. It's always fun just to look. See how different they are. Yeah. The proportions are a little wonky on the round part here. But I'm not going to tell if you guys don't tell. It's our secret. Don't tell anybody. Nobody has to know. It's my sketch, right? My sketch, my rules. I'm trying to do an ASMR voice. Does it work? Especially with the nice noisy 3D printer behind me. I wish I could show you guys the tower that's printing. It's looking kind of cool. So she designed a tower based on their story Tangled, which I think is based on Rapunzel. I never. I think I saw the first three minutes of Tangled and fell asleep. But yeah, it's looking kind of cool. And it's. I'm printing it with this marble looking plastic filament. If you guys ever want to see me do like a live. Like a 3D stream where I maybe I design something online with an app software. Because I could live stream designing something and I can kind of show you how I take it from designing on the computer to. To sending it to the 3D printer. Let me know. I'd love to do a live stream like that. I think it could be kind of fun. So you can see a little bit of that process. Why not, right? Singing is your spirit. Oh, I love that. I love. Do you connect with any special kinds of music or an artist? I'd love to know. That's so cool. How much is a 3D printer you can get? Can I take you guys for a ride and show you? Let me see. I could. You guys, do you want to see this 3D printer? Let me see if I can take you for a quick ride. Let me take this off. I have never done this before. Pardon my hand and move this camera if it can come off easily getting part in my hand here. I'm trying to unscrew this camera. This camera does not want to. There we go. All right. Prepare to buckle. Buckle your safety belt. So anyway, this printer over here I think was around $260. I'm tethered here. I have never done this. Guys, bear with me. You were going to see inside my messy studio. You know what? It's a room that I work in, create in. Do all my office work in here? Can we get it? Can we get it? I don't know. Let's see. Am I upside down? We're upside down, I think. Let's try it that way. Oh, that's a microphone. I have a zip tie that is not coming off. All right, maybe this won't work. It's not going to work right now. I got a zip tie that I can't get off. Sorry about that. We'll do another live stream sometime where I can show you in detail. What it looks like. At least we tried. At least we tried. Anyway. Yeah, so it's cool. It's about $260. It's called the bamboo lab. A1 printer. Really cool. Does awesome work. Sorry if I made you dizzy there. But yeah, I recommend it and I will definitely more than happy to talk about it in more detail anytime for you guys. Ta da. All right, I think that's a wrap for tonight, guys. Jen, you're welcome. Thank you for joining live. I appreciate you hanging out for a bit. Thank you for being a mod and fending off those wacky people that are just overloading the chat stream. One day. One day that might be a problem, but I do appreciate you and your efforts and hanging out and sharing out the stream. Thank you so much. Today's Monday, so I'm planning on going live Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. If I put a notify, I think maybe I'll just put a notify thing out ahead of time so people know and. Yeah, there we go. Cool. All right, guys, until we meet again. Sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire endlessly. See you. See you on the next sketching session. I have an idea of. I have an idea of what I think I'd like to do next on the next stream, so stay tuned.
