Monday Night Sketching

Jason Nicholas sketches live while reflecting on mentorship and creative process. He draws perspective lines and experiments with colors, celebrating viewers by name and sharing his niece's mechanical-engineering graduation. Throughout, he emphasizes a "creative sandbox" philosophy: low expectations, embracing the journey over the final product, and finding joy in each line.

figure out what humans do. I'm stumbling, I'm rising, falling, realizing, I'm changing, still fighting, still learning, still trying. No script, no plan, no perfect version, this is simply being human. This is simply being human. I've carried doubts like heavy stone, felt the weight when I'm alone. I've lit the dark with smaller sparks, found my strength inside the mind. Every flaw, every bruise I've earned, every lesson painfully learned, all the moments that left me torn made me someone worth fighting for. I'm struggling, I'm rising, falling, realizing I'm changing, still fighting, still learning, Still trying. No script, no plan, no perfect version. This is simply being human. This is simply being human. I'm not here to be flawless. I'm not here to pretend. I'm here to keep moving. I'm getting again. I'm here to keep choosing a life I can stand, a life that's my own. I'm still becoming, still becoming.
I'm stumbling Hey guys, it's, um, April 27th, Monday. Hope you're doing well. I'm Jason Nicholas Nicholas with The Inkspired Life, where I love sketching architecture. It brings me to a place of peace, joy, happiness, memory-ness, um, thoughtfulness. And it connects me to you, and I love that because it's always great engaging with you guys in the chat. Hope you're having a great day. Let me know how your Monday went. I hope it was really, really good. It's been a long Monday here. I'm exhausted, but you know what, I'm pushing past. I got to do my sketching today, and I figured I'd come on share some time with you guys and, um, yeah, just check in. So yeah, let me know how it is going in your universe. I have nothing planned. I, I, I'm in a wonky mood. I'm not feeling, uh, 100 right now, so I'm being real with you guys. I just want to come on and sketch, and I don't know where it's going to go, and it might not go anywhere. And that's okay. For me, it's the act of creating, throwing lines down on a blank piece of paper, throwing colors down on a blank piece of paper that just puts me where I need to be. Um, yeah, it's always great seeing you guys. All right, um, let me know if I could put music on in the background. I will. Uh, Cameron, hey, good to see you. You sent me a message, thank you. Yeah, you wanted to talk, talk to me regarding a reference. Of course, Cameron, I'd love to help you out. I'll check my message. Um, I think you have my number. If you're always welcome to call me or text me, so feel free. I'm more than happy to help you out, and I'd love, I'd love to catch up with you. It's been a long time. I know you're busy and I've been busy, but yeah, maybe we can get together sometime and just catch up. I, I really appreciate it, and, uh, I miss you, buddy. I hope you're doing— hope you're doing well. I'm definitely here to support you. Very, very cool. And also, just let me know if you do have my number or not, or I can just send it to you in Messenger. All right, that'd be cool. Linda, good to see you. Hope all is well. Awesome, great to see you. Edie's in the house. I don't know why I said it like that. Edie, so good to see you as well. I love you guys, you're awesome. Let's put on, um, I need music. Uh, you guys probably don't want to hear music, do you? I'll just play some on my phone here. So I'm just— I don't even know what I'm sketching. I threw down some kind of perspective. And that's what's one of the fun things. I just love grabbing and going and see what happens. I'm not expecting anything other than a little bit of reset and a little bit of fun. I do want to put some music on here. Whoa, I forgot to turn on my Spotify. That hurt my ear. Okay, all right. I'm gonna work on this a little bit. Let's see where this sketch goes. Linda, always great seeing you. Thank you for tuning in on the Facebook side of the tracks. I have Edie over there on the YouTube side of the tracks. Appreciate you guys. I want to give a shout out to my, um, my niece, who once in a blue moon might tune in, but she just graduated from college today from Northeastern with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. I am so, so proud of you. That's awesome. So I'm a proud uncle today. Let's pick up a different color. We're just gonna grab— you know, I'm not even gonna look, guys. I'm just gonna pick stuff up over on my left-hand side. I got a bunch of stuff over there. I'm just gonna pick and grab and go. Hey, thank you, Edie. I appreciate that. Yeah, she's, um— I'm so proud of her because stuff. We love when good stuff happens, right? I always love to see someone out there with a bright and promising future. So awesome. And that also goes for Cameron, who was on Facebook. I don't know if he's still there, but Cameron, I believe, has a bright and promising future. Man, I can't— when did you graduate? 2022? I can't remember. Sometimes I have trouble remembering what years my, uh, Former students graduating. I know, isn't that crazy, crazy, crazy? It's always cool as a teacher to see where some students go and we know what, what they're up to and where their life journey is taking them. And there are kids out there that know I definitely support them and their choices and them as human beings. Um, for me, it's not about whether they go into like design or architecture. That is not the point. I'm just doing my best to put good vibes out there, to be a role model, a mentor, and see people on their journey the best I can. And some students have gone into engineering and architecture, design, interior design. That's cool. Some have gone down totally different paths, and that is also cool. So I think that is one of the reasons I just love teaching, is that just to being able to be— I like to use the word mentor. That is my role, my goal. And that's the same with you guys here online. I try to be a mentor online with the Inkspired Life, you know, whether it's a positivity or creativity or You know, some mindset stuff. I don't know how I positively impact you guys, but I really hope I'm doing that, and that's what keeps me coming back. I haven't heard this song in a long time. Cameron says 2021. Thank you, Cameron. I was off by a year. Holy moly, that's insane. Am I really that old? Well, I must say I'm aging gracefully. I'm just kidding, I am just kidding. All right guys, this is fun. I'm just, like I said, I'm just throwing down colors on this. Is this a spectacular sketch? No. Am I having fun? Yeah. That's all I want to do tonight. I kind of like this color. It's almost terracotta-y. Cameron, I love that you have an interview. That's so cool. Hey, food.truckstore, I see you on Instagram. Hello, food.truckstore. Hey, I'm imagining a food dash truck store. A food truck. I don't know if you have a food truck or not, but if so, that's cool. Hey, thank you, Food. I appreciate that. Appreciate it. This is really just me. This is, this is just me throwing down random stuff. Uh, if you guys watched last night, this was a fun sketch here inspired by, um a church in Toledo, Spain. It's kind of cool. I think one of my faves in here so far is the, um, Ponte Vecchio in Florence. I love this sketch, it's a fun one. So this is kind of my quick journal doodle sketches in this book. And then if you guys have been following along, this is my NYC sketchbook. This is my favorite project this year as far as art and sketching goes, but I love the stuff in here. Soon to be a calendar, just gotta figure out how to scan it and more importantly how to print it with good quality prints. Yeah, so check this out. If you're— if you like what you see here, go back, watch some of my YouTube videos. You can see how we created these. I think all of these were done live. Did I livestream all these guys? I may not have livestreamed this one, but yeah, that would be actually cool to go back and see if these were all livestreamed. I was thinking about doing a Brooklyn Bridge, um, sketch tonight, like a very long kind of panoramic of it. But I, I'm not feeling it right now, and plus it's kind of late. So we're just going to kind of doodle in this thing, just keep throwing down colors and lines on here, just see where it goes. For me, it's about the journey, not the end result. Just want to have some fun. Let me zoom in. All right, let's see. Grab and go, grab and go. I said I wasn't gonna look, but I am looking. I'm looking at the colors here. I think my yellow Creative Marker is trying to tell me it needs a new life in the trash can. I think that one's shot. I am burning through these Creative Markers like no tomorrow. Holy moly, Sharpie! Sharpie's not a sponsor. I don't even know if they sponsor anybody, but I do love using your stuff there, Sharpie. Just saying, just saying. It's okay to ask sometimes, right guys? Not trying to be greedy, greedy. Be cool to be restocked on the stuff I like using. This is really— this is kind of— this is really something different for me tonight. Told you I was feeling a little off, a little different today. I think it's showing in my, um, sketch. It's not a bad thing. Can we see an end result? Hey, thanks. Me neither. Again, this is me just— this is me just playing around. This is the creative sandbox. So I had never— I rarely set high expectations for any of my art. It's just kind of throwing it down and letting it go where it goes. If it turns out awesome, that's cool. If not, that's cool too. I always learn something along the way. Maybe it's a color I used that I liked, or maybe it's a technique, uh, maybe it was a mix of colors, and it was a kind of line I drew or a shape. There's always something like you can learn just by kind of, uh, being in the creative sandbox. Now I got Joker colors, purple and green. We got some Joker colors on here. And I dropped my cap. What the heck? All right, we lost a cap, we lost a cap. Cap down, cap down. Um, I'm looking for gel pens.
Here we are.
This one, I think this one's dead. No more gel pen. That goes with the yellow one in the trash. All right guys, I'm only gonna be on for like 2 more minutes or so. I'm pretty tired. I'm gonna listen to one more song, then wrap up. Sure.
Okay.
I think my highlighter is shot as well.
Let's try it.
Mm, still got a little bit of in there. Can we— I like the purple and green together. Yeah, it's an interesting combination, right? This is really— I don't even know what to call this. Oh yeah, this is maybe a fun exercise and just throwing down color combinations, seeing what works. So yeah, purple and green looks really, really cool. I agree. Let's, uh, let's exaggerate it on this side. Let's do some for Linda. Linda is my green fan. It's always good to see you, Linda. I hope you are well, my friend. I miss my inklings. I miss you guys in our Zooms. All right, let's just go for it. We're gonna really just throw this green down and purple. We'll take it home with this. Oh, I just dropped it. All right, I just dropped the green marker on the floor with a cap somewhere. Guys, let tonight be a lesson and just be playful. Don't have expectations sometimes. Just grab pens, pencils, paintbrushes, whatever, whatever medium you use, and just throw stuff down. You might like it, you might not, and it's all good. You don't know unless you try, right? That's kind of what this is about for me tonight. We're gonna let this dry, and then I'm gonna throw some white gel pen on top. Covered up more of that green than I wanted to. It's all good. I can't believe we're almost done with April, guys. May is not that far away. So crazy. This year is— I don't want to— I don't want to say flying by. It's not even flying by. It's like if it was a superhero, it would be The Flash. The Flash. It's just going so, so fast. I can't process it. It's crazy. So I'm just trying to pull some shapes out of these solid colors. It's pretty interesting, actually. Yeah, this is something. This is something. All right, I hope you guys are having a great, great day. I hope you have some awesome plans for tomorrow, whether it's working, not working, hanging out, cleaning, catching up on stuff. It doesn't matter. Make the best out of whatever you have planned for tomorrow. I love this yellow neon color, color pencil. It's just like using a highlighter. We got the orange one here. This is Neon Orange. Sometimes I like to take these color pencils, the neon ones, and just go over some of the Creative Marker areas. It just changes colors a little bit. Let me show you. Let's try some pink. Uh, let's do some pink over here and see what happens. Mm, I don't think it's really picking up on camera because the lighting, but this pink is changing the red underneath. I really like it. Really put more on, see if you can see it. I don't think it's picking up on camera because of the lighting. Karen, have a great night. Take care. Good luck tomorrow, your final review on Friday. Oh, good luck to you. That's awesome, man. Good luck. All right, I need one more color and we're wrapping up. I need a coolish blue. Something on the cool side, cool side of the tracks. Um, I'll grab an aqua. I wasn't really thinking aqua, but we're just gonna grab and go. Boom. I feel compelled to color every— everything on this sketch. Usually I like to leave breathing room, some Bring out Chartreuse, uh, some, some breathing room. But let's just fill all these squares in. Take it, let's take it, take it home by filling all these in. All right, I need one more color and then it's a wrap. Let's see. I'm just gonna grab this yellow-orange. I think it's called Sunburst Yellow. Uh, what do we got? Sunburst Yellow. I got it. I kind of like the Sunburst Yellow next to the Chartreuse. I think that's a cool color combo. So that's Sunburst Yellow next to Chartreuse. Which I am actually digging that combo. So I agree with Linda, I like the purple and green. I'm also liking the chartreuse and sunburst yellow. All right guys, this has definitely been an interesting one tonight. We threw down a lot of color on here, some shapes, some color. That is what it's about. I just want— I need some red here. Nice. And there we go. That's a wrap on tonight's kind of— I don't even know what to call it. What do we call this playful thing? Sketch? Color? Doesn't even need a name. No, I say it doesn't. All right, you guys are awesome. Thank you for joining tonight. I appreciate you so, so much. Hey, Mel, good to see you. Hope all is well, man. Always good to see you. Mel is a fantastic artist. I love Mel's people so much. Hope you're doing well, my friend. I would love to— I'd love to meet, meet with you in GCT and sketch sometime. That would be so fun. You maybe give me some pro tips about sketching there. But yeah, so guys, tonight was just an exercise and just throwing down colors, seeing what works next to each other, what doesn't work. So consensus, I guess, is purple and the green work really well together. Um, and then my other favorite color combo I'm seeing is the Chartreuse and the Sunburst Yellow. It's a cool color combo. I love this red, and then I threw some pink on top. I wish it was coming through on camera. But I love that color combination. Hey, hey, thanks for the thumbs up, Mel. Yeah, it would be so fun. I'm— I miss you, man. I'd love to catch up with you sometime. I'm going to try to get to more events this summer. Yeah. All right guys, so just let this be a play lesson in colors and throwing stuff down, right? Awesome. Um, this is— I like this one here too. All right guys, it is after 10 o'clock. I am so tired. I have to get up, I have school mañana. Of course I do. That's what I do. Um, it's all good. You guys are awesome. Thank you for spending some time with me tonight and just watching, uh, just watching some play, play in action, playfulness. Um, next time I'm going to maybe attempt— I really want to do a long accordion, uh, journal of— I think the Brooklyn Bridge would be cool. Uh, what else? Well, we'll see whatever else comes our way. Until we meet again, sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire endlessly.
