Sketch and Chill Wednesday

In this live‑stream titled “Sketch and Chill Wednesday,” Jason Nicholas of The Inspired Life guides viewers through an informal, improvisational sketching session. He begins by explaining his habit of clapping to reset his energy and mindset, then introduces the Soho Urban Artist Sketch Craft paper—a thin, colored, 65‑lb sheet ideal for pencils, markers, and limited ink work but not watercolor. Using Prismacolor premier color pencils, Sharpie creative markers, and Sharpie acrylic markers, Jason demonstrates layering techniques, additive and subtractive mark‑making, and the use of hatching and contour lines to shape a whimsical lighthouse sketch. He experiments by applying acrylic paint directly onto the thin paper, noting how the paint behaves, how it can be scraped away, and the resulting texture. Throughout, he engages with chat participants (Paula, Chip, Jeff, Becky, etc.), shares his live‑stream schedule (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays around 9 pm), and encourages community interaction and positivity. He also recommends specific tools—a battery‑powered pencil sharpener—and directs viewers to his website’s tools page with affiliate links. The stream concludes with reflections on boldness, playfulness, and the value of mixed‑media experimentation, reinforcing his mantra to “sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire endlessly.”

It. Foreign. Hey, it's Wednesday, February 4, 2026. I'm Jason with the inspired life. Hope you're having a good Wednesday. I don't know why I just randomly clapped, but I do a lot of clapping. Actually, I find clapping is a way to change, just like sketching changes my state of being. Clapping is a way of kind of bringing me back to the moment and getting my energy level instantly up. So if you ever see me clapping in person, my students know this, but I clap. I clap a lot. It's a way of kind of resetting. So, anyway, happy Wednesday. I'm on. Not too long. I'm so tired, but I have to do my daily. My daily sketching. And I'm going to talk probably not so much today. And we're going to just hit it right now. Feel free to leave any questions or comments. I'll definitely check in and say hello. Let's just. Let's just get something out of here onto paper. Don't know where we're headed, but I have different paper I'm sketching with tonight. I'm going to be sketching in my Soho sketch craft paper. Here's what I love about this. It's not white paper. It's. Yeah, it's this cool, cool color. Oh, here's a sketch I did. This is the Adams family house. Adams family house. So this is a fun paper just because the Sharpie creative markers really pop on it. So I thought I'd break this out tonight. Sometimes we feel like we always need to sketch on white paper. There are all kinds of different colors, different types of. And we're going to go with this. It's pretty thin paper, so it's not really meant for watercoloring. Doing a lot of ink washing. So you probably will not be doing that tonight. All right, let's do some sketching. It's. It's. It. So this is just a fun lighthouse sketch. Just throwing all kinds of things on it, just having fun. Hey, Paula, Great to see you. Loving the colored pencils. Thanks, Paula. Hope you're doing well. Yeah. These are Prismacolor premier color pencils. I love the way they look on this brown. This craft paper. They kind of really, really pop on this paper. They're a lot of. A lot of fun to use. Also, these acrylic. The Sharpie acrylic markers are also really cool to use on this paper. So I want to pull out the shape of the lighthouse a little bit and just bold it up. And do I want to use black? Not sure. You know What? Yeah. All right. Yeah, we'll do it. I definitely want to pull out this. Let's. Let's make this roof a little more whimsical. Let's kind of just give it a little bit of an umbrella shape. Maybe this is a kind of a whimsical imaginary lighthouse sketch. Just pop this building out here, Throw some windows in. I don't know. I kind of like the white outline. So I'm not going to actually, I'm not going to bring the black color all the way down. I like that white. So I'm going to add more white, I think, on this edge. Which is what's fun about these markers is they're so easy just to layer on top of each other. So I'm literally just kind of scribbling in a sky here. Hey, how are you doing, Chip? Good to see you. Hope all's well. Thank you guys always for giving me the thumbs up. Thumbs up. The likes on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, sharing it. I really, really, I really appreciate getting this out there and I appreciate it when I don't talk over the pencil sharpener. Yeah, thank you, guys. I always appreciate it. The more, believe it or not, the more you like, likes you do, or shoutouts, thumbs up. Positive stuff. I mean, all that social media jazz, it just spreads the word and I, I feel compelled and I feel it's like a calling to spread positivity through creativity. And I would just love to bring more and more of it. I feel like we need more and more of it more now than ever. So I appreciate you guys so much. This is a really. I love this color on this paper. This is, this is called sky blue light. Sky blue light. It's a pretty nice color. Hey, Chip, good to see you. And you, Chip, you are not late. Because I never tell you guys when I'm going to be on. I am starting to go live. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Yeah, usually 9 o'. Clock. Ish, we'll say. So that's kind of a goal. Let's see how long it lasts. I have had people asking me, you know, do you have a regular time? Which I get because it'd be helpful for people to know when I'm on. So my answer is yes for now. Monday, Wednesdays, Fridays, usually around 9:00pm Maybe a little before, maybe a little bit after. Cool. Yeah. So this is fun. There's different colors. Check out the vibrancy and the brightness happening. Paula says thanks for the ideas for using the markers and pencils on this type of paper. Hey. Of course. So if you want to know more specifics, this is the paper I'm using. Soho urban artist sketch craft paper. There are only 65 pound sheets, so they're really thin. I don't recommend doing watercolor on here or not even really ink washing. It'll buckle up the paper, wrinkle it. It's super thin, but it's really good for, as you can see, pencils, markers, pens. I need more red. I gotta really bring out some red on this as I'm looking in. Camera. Zoom in a smidge. Whoa. There we go. Yeah, I want to throw down some red. Got a whole pile of. You see? Got a whole pile of stuff here. Where do I want red? I'm just gonna go where my brain. My brain and my heart kind of just guide. I like the layers of colors shining through here. So I don't want to fill this in solid, solid red. I want to leave. I want to see layers. I don't have enough layers on here yet. I guess that's the word that keeps just popping into my brain tonight. Layer, layer, layer. So you know what I'm gonna try? Should I be brave? Yeah, we should. Because my mom. One of the things I like to say is sketch boldly. All right, I am gonna. I want to throw some acrylic paint on here, believe it or not. Change of plans. No, not acrylic paint. Let's. Let's try. Nope. Acrylic paint. I'm all over the place. We grab some paint right back here. What can I grab? I got this color here. Grab this color. Maybe. I don't know. Oh, yeah. I just, I. When I think of acrylic painting or oil painting, I think of layers and layers and layers. I mean, there are layers in watercolor paper paintings. There's layers and what I'm doing here, but I'm thinking more of a three dimensional layer that you can feel and touch. I've never used acrylic in here. I was just saying to you, it's really thin paper. I'm just doing it, just doing it. Go back a couple songs here. All right, so let's just throw some down and see what happens. You don't know unless you try. Right? I'm also. I'm also going to come back over this sometime and I'm going to add acrylic on top of it. I thought about that earlier today. Now let's just do it, guys. Yolo. Is that what it is? Yolo. You only live once. I'm dying to use this color. Check this color out. This is. What is it called? Light something violet. I can't read it. Getting old. It's light something violet. I can't read what it says, but we're gonna use it. I know Chip out there is a really awesome acrylic painter. He's. He inspires me with his acrylic paintings. I am. Guys, I'm gonna be messy here. I. What do I want to use? What brush? I don't want to use my bamboo brush because it's only one I have, and I love it, love it, love it for watercolor. Let's grab them here. What do I got in this thingy? Yeah, we'll go with this. I got this little travel brush. All right, so we got some color on the paper. Let's move it around a little bit. Hey, Jeff. Great to see you. Jeff's in the house. How you doing? Awesome to see you, man. Oh, it's light blue. Violet. Thanks. I couldn't read it. That's how old I am. So, literally, this is a happy. To quote Bob Ross. I guess happy little accident. I. The paint just fell on here. We're going to go with it again. This is all fun for me, guys. I don't care. I'm just playing around. Cool thing with acrylic is if you do it really thin, it's opaque. You can actually see through. I'm actually gonna. You'll see what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna scrape some of that away. I usually have, like, a toothpick or a skewering, so it's called skewering stick. What do you. What do you use for shish kebabs? A skew skewer. I usually have one of those here somewhere. I can just scrape off paint, but we're winging it. If you hear thumping out there running around. They're playing with the pup. Move this up a little bit. Yeah, this is cool. I like the way it's kind of layering. I like the color shining through underneath. So you want to do that as it dries. If I just kind of go back over it, I can pull some of that off. Acrylic dries pretty quick, especially since it's really dry in my room. Yep. I hear Olivia out there running around. My gosh. Is it 9:46 I. Chihuahua. Where does the time go? I am making a mess, and that's part of the fun. All right, that's cool. That's cool. Let's throw some of this on there. This is cadmium yellow. Just going to scoop some off the top. Acrylic painting is really messy, guys. Usually I'll have. I'll have it more organized kind of things laid out, but we are grabbing, going and seeing what's happening. I like the sky like that. I'm not going to throw any in there. Cool. Let me know if you guys have any questions or comments as I start to wrap up here for tonight. All right. Yeah, I am. I am making a mess. And it feels kind of fun. I think it's all the acrylic I'm going to throw down for right now. I'll do show and tell one day I'll show you my abstract acrylic painting phase. It's actually when I first started live streaming, I was doing that. Some of them are cool. I'm really loving this texture here that looks really cool. And I just created that by. I'm just dipping the brush in water and I'm just kind of going back over some of this and pulling some of that color out, just dragging it through. And I got this cool texture over there. It's getting too dry over here to really kind of do that. Well, some of it's coming off. Oh, look at that. It's coming off. So sometimes painting, mixed media painting isn't just about adding layers, it's about removing layers. Right. So I'm just taking some layers off here. So we have additive and subtractive kind of layering going on. I don't want to overdo it. So I think that's looking kind of cool. All right, we'll do one last thing on here. I need. I need a little more turquoise. Oh, dang. I just. Yeah, I just spilled some water. By the way, if you're looking for a really, really cool battery powered pencil sharpener, this. This thing is killer for. It works really well with these. If you go to my Inspired Life website, I have a tools and material page on there. You can find it on there and there's a link. It'll bring you to my Amazon kind of my Amazon link. It's the same price you would pay anywhere else. Amazon will give me like $0.01 or something if you use my link. So. But if you're looking for it, you could definitely find it there. I love this pencil sharpener. All right. I wanted to add some. I have. I do have bright aqua green, but I'm not going to use that. I'm going to go for. We're going to use a creative marker. And I noticed something before. These are actually two different colors. I thought they were the same so this is more of a green sea greenish and this is more of a turquoise ish. I love the turquoise one. We also have the light aqua color pencil as well which looks. This color looks amazing on this craft paper. It's. It is spectacular. I lost, I did lose this edge of the lighthouse. Maybe we'll just. I'll throw some white on there. We'll see what happens. It's. Alright. The last thing, we'll just add some hatching lines. I'm going to use a Sharpie gel pen because it works pretty well over wet areas. So I have one here. This a Sharpie rollerball pen. Let's try this one. Hey, Becky's in the house. Great to see you. Let me dry this up. Jeff says maybe some Highline inspired sketches, paintings in the future, vessel barrel building, etc. Yeah, Jeff, I love that suggestion. The High Line, you know, you know, you know how I feel about the High Line. I'm always talking about it on the chats. Highlines an incredible resource for sketching. I've done sketches on there. I'm just looking here. Do I have. I don't know if I have the vessel in here or not, but yeah, 100%. We'll definitely do that. I did a really cool vessel sketch. I don't know if it's up in any of these sketchbooks here, but I love, love the suggestions. Always feel free to give me suggestions, guys. I don't know if it's in here. This is actually a sketchbook from. Hey, Becky, great to see you. Becky's in the house. Hope you're doing awesome. This is a. These are sketches from when I went to Domino Park. Domino Park, Brooklyn. I love, I love the Domino Sugar Factory building. It is, it's probably my top three favorite buildings in New York City. So I went sketching there one day and. Well, actually, well, this isn't that building. These are sketches from outside the Museum of Natural History. I was supposed to go inside and sketch with the urban sketchers, but the line was so dang long I didn't wait. I didn't want to wait in line and lose sketching time, so I stayed outside. But you can see how the white pops on this craft paper if you don't know the building. The American Museum of Natural History, New York City has really interesting exterior of the building. I don't think the vessels in this one. There's a planetarium there. This is kind of the outside view part of the really cool glass box where you can see the dome of the planetarium. Inside. So these are all done, you know, on location. Here's a domino sugar factory building. This is a different day. Same thing. This is the Domino park. They have these really cool old, like, crane structures there. Man, I just love that turquoise color. That makes me so happy we have the Manhattan Bridge. Anyway, I don't think the vessel's in this one. More domino stuff. Yeah. Thank you so much, Jeff. I appreciate that. Vessel is not an easy structure to sketch, but that's what I like about it. I'm trying to put these back here. All right, let me add some hatch lines, and we'll wrap this one up. I'm probably getting paint. Yeah, I got paint on my jacket here. Why did I wear this jacket when I was doing this? I'm so silly. You guys know my saying, it's not art unless you. Wear it? It's not art unless you wear it. Guys, I am wearing acrylic paint here. Here, I got some on my sleeve. Oh, my gosh. Look at this. Holy. That's not. This is not from tonight. The paint on here is. That's from tonight. Ah, man. It's all right. It just shows it's well, well loved, well worn. Right. That's what. That's why I have it. It's not a showpiece. It's something I wear and use. We're going to do some contour lines. We'll do some vertical hatch lines to give this a more rounded kind of look. I am going to turn it this way so I don't get the paint in my sleeve. On my sleeve. I'm very bad with prepositions. Let's see when I do it this way. And we'll just do some contour lines, these kind of curved lines. And this will just help give the illusion that this is more of a rounded, curved shape like you might expect the lighthouse to be. Yeah. The gel pen. The rollerball pen is not really doing what I want it to do. It's not writing on top of the markers. I am off camera, but you can see there. I'll flip it around in a second. Just trying to. Where's my sharpie gel pen? I think it's in this bin here. I don't know what that is. Here it is. That's not it. Here it is. It's at the bottom. All right. This should write fairly well on top of the creative marker. It's definitely better than that ballpoint pen. All right, I'll flip it over, and we'll wrap up. Boom. Let's just do some scribblies down here at the bottom. All right, let's check it out. See the final one? I'll zoom out. Yeah. Every time I wear this jacket, I'll remember light blue violet. Yes. 100%. This is now the light blue violet jacket. And there you go. That's kind of the final. That's the final dealio for the night. This was fun. I like it. I like it. I didn't use neon yellow, did I, kid? The kid says as he's wrapping up. That's all right. Cool. Put the pencil down. The pencil is down. Guys, this has been awesome. Thank you so much for spending some time with me on this Wednesday night. This Wednesday light blue violet night. It might be my new favorite color. Yeah. I'm just saying. Trying to think of a takeaway. Maybe I'm just gonna. It's something I've said before. Just be bold. Go for it. Throw it down. Like, I've never used acrylic paint on this really thin craft paper. And did it go through? It did not bleed through, but paper's all wrinkled, but it worked. How fun was that? Hey, Becky's over on the YouTube. I love that. Guys, on YouTube, make sure you smash that thumbs up button. The more thumbs up, the more people this might get out to. I appreciate it. I love that. Yeah. What do you guys think? This is kind of cool. I love the texture, and I like. I like the blue over the color pencil and how we scrape some of it away. I just think it added a little bit of. A little bit of interest. I am losing those rocks down there. I know. It's like, step away, man. Step away. What are you doing? There's supposed to be stones down here. I'm just gonna pop some. Maybe some gray on here just to pull them out a little. All right. There we go. I just want to pull that out. Smidge. Done. Be done with it. All right. Got a lot of stuff out here tonight. Here. Boom. That's what it's about. It's about playtime. This is the creative sandbox. Let things go, let things flow, because you never know where they'll go. Dr. Seuss guy's nothing on me, Right, guys, Till we meet again. Sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire endlessly. And yes. Pencils down, class. Pencils down, class. I love that. And Becky says it looks. Becky, thank you. I appreciate that. It was so great seeing you guys Live in the chat, I have Becky and Jeff and Chip and I had Paula earlier. So thank you guys for watching live and commenting. That's always makes it more entertaining, engaging for me. Yeah. So again, I'm trying to go live Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. So I'll be back Friday. Peace out.
