Sketch Something Saturday

Jason Nicholas sketches an abstract colorful cityscape live on Kraft paper with markers and gel pen, building layered depth with bridges and water towers. He's 200 subscribers away from 1,000 and promises a giveaway sketch when he hits it.

Hey, it's Saturday, February 21st, um, 10:05 PM. Kind of late for me to be popping on, but Yeah, I'm popping on now. I just want to do some sketching before I go to bed. So, um, hope you're having a great, great day today. So, um, yesterday we sketched this Brooklyn Bridge. I think it came out kind of cool. I like it. But tonight let's do a sketch. We'll do it in, uh, the Soho book with the kraft paper. We'll definitely use some creative markers. Because I love them so much. Let's take a bunch out now and we'll do a, we'll do a quick sketch tonight. I hope all's going well. We are expecting some snow starting tomorrow, I think around 6 PM, lasting until Monday 5 PM or something. I see all different numbers, anywhere from 8 to 10 to 12 to 16 inches. Who the heck knows? But it does seem like we're definitely getting some snow. Yippee! All right, it's all good. All right, let's do some sketching. Um, I've been really liking these abstract cityscape kind of thingies, so we'll— I think we'll do another one of these tonight. I'm having so much fun just throwing down blocks of color. Um, there's a few— there's another one here. Um, I think these would make really cool prints. So, you know, if I were to frame them, you know, I think they're really— they're just fun little pieces of pops of color. Let me zoom in a little bit. Here we go. So just fun pops of pieces of pops of color, and I just like the energy, the movement, um, the whimsy in them. So let's just create one of these tonight. So I'm going to throw down some color, got some music going, and, um, this will probably be a pretty quick stream tonight. Let's do it. Everything looks good. I'm going to zoom out a little bit just so I can fit more Yeah, we'll do something like that. And if you hear my pup in the background, she's barking, barking at something. It's kind of weird this time of night to be barking. I know our neighbors were having people over their house, so there might be cars kind of leaving. She sees them going up and down the street there. All right, let's zoom in. I think this one's almost done. A couple of— it's a couple things I want to add, but I think we're in the home stretch. So it's fun just kind of, uh, to come on here, sketch, get lost in the music for a few minutes. But, uh, I just want to pull out— these are water towers up here. I'm going to pull them out a little bit more with this white gel pen, just give some shape to them. And we'll do this little one over here as well. There you go, you kind of see the overall. Let's throw a black frame around it. So that was fun. Um, thank you for watching live. Hope you have an awesome rest of your day or night or whatever part of the day it is for you. Um, if you're in the blizzard zone, stay safe, stay warm. Stay dry. Um, we'll see what— we'll see what, uh, Mother Nature throws our way. And, um, I am definitely going to enlist some help with shoveling this time. All right, let's throw a frame around it. This is cool. I'm loving this series of I don't know what to call it yet. These are kind of colorful cityscapes from my imagination. Don't know, don't know what to call it yet, but I, I have done a few of them. Let's say we have one here, is one from last night. Boom. 2, and there's definitely another one in here. Yeah, 3 right here. And they're fun because they're all a little different. I am trying to incorporate bridges somehow into all of them. I like how this has water in it, that's kind of cool. But you can see kind of a bridge— bridges thing happening up there. Um, This one has a bridge happening here, and then this one, some kind of bridge across the base. And I'm imagining these are different layers, right? So we have some things closer, something's more in the background, some mid-ground, and just the overlapping of shapes, which to me says, um, skyline says city. It's that kind of almost busy look with the overlapping colors and shapes happening. So I'm trying to, trying to get a sense of energy and movement kind of being conveyed through, um, through the lines on this. This is interesting. This is the— yeah, I use actually, uh, let's see. Yeah, I used a Sharpie here, black Sharpie. I used a black Sharpie on this one, but not so much. I see a little bit down here, maybe some up in here. I did not use any Sharpie on this, not that I need to, but let's just throw some Sharpie. It helps to pull out some of the edges a little bit, and I don't want to get too crazy with it. I almost like it without it, but kind of just Throwing these edges around here, it's just pulling out, especially the yellow. The yellow against the brown kraft paper is not popping as much as I want it to, so I think the Sharpie will just help to pull out the shape a little bit more. You can kind of see there, right? And it's fun just to throw a little lines on here, windows or something. Let me just pull out this one here a little bit more as well. We'll pull that shape out. So it's kind of, uh, it's kind of just finding or defining shapes that we have from the blocks of color. So I'm kind of just bringing a little bit of, a little bit of organization, a little bit of, um, I don't want to say precision, but kind of controlling these blocks of color just a little bit with this kind of black outline. This, this is not a sketch about precision at all. It's really just a— these are more like sketches about discovery, just throwing down blocks of color, lines of color, and then seeing what we can kind of pull out of it. I, you know, my brain's wired for architecture, it's wired for, for cityscapes, skyscrapers, so that's what I see when I do these. If you try this, you might see something totally different. Maybe you'll see nature shapes, maybe trees or flowers, or maybe some of you, you will see animals or people. So that's why it's really cool to start with these kind of abstract blocks of color and let your imagination, your creativity take over and see things within those blocks and those lines. Yes, yeah, I think that's enough Sharpie. I think that's enough Sharpie. I'm gonna put it down. Just wanted to— especially with this building block and then this yellow one, I wanted to really just pop them out a little bit more. Hey, let me know if you have any, uh, final questions or comments. It's quiet in the chat. We have no questions or comments in the chat, and that's cool. It's late. I popped on.
