Sketch Something Sunday - Feb 2, 2025

In this informal livestream, artist Jason Nicholas returns after a week‑long illness to sketch live for his audience. He opens by explaining his recent sinus infection and the need to reconnect with his art practice. Using watercolor, Sharpie Creative Markers, and colored pencils, he creates a loose, abstract city‑scape/harbor scene while narrating his material choices (lemon yellow, blue, Process Red, Sunburst Yellow, Neon Pink, chartreuse, etc.), discussing how lighting and screen display affect color perception, and sharing his spontaneous workflow (e.g., applying colored pencil on wet paper despite usual patience). Throughout, he engages with chat participants (D‑Ray, Laura, Jason Horvath), mentions streaming on YouTube and Facebook, and comments on technical issues like camera focus and internet lag. Music from classic film scores (John Williams, Superman, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter) serves as a backdrop, influencing his creative decisions. He reflects on the therapeutic value of sketching, the role of vibrant colors in fostering a “spring” mindset, and encourages viewers to keep creating despite obstacles. The stream concludes with a quick review of the finished sketch, a brief Q&A, and a heartfelt thank‑you to his community.

Hey, happy, um, Sunday, February 2nd, and it's 7:59 PM. Excuse me, I'm, uh, popping on just for a few minutes to do some sketching. I have been under the weather and, um, have not been sketching every day, so I kind of miss it, and I wanted just to pop on and do something. I don't even know what I'm going to sketch. I might just even scribble, but I just need that connection. I need that, you know, having the pen in my hand and just putting something down on paper. So, um, hope you are doing well, um, wherever you're watching from. We have some snow falling here. Alright. Hopefully the camera— there we go, it's a little blurry. Hopefully it's sharp now. So yeah, I'm just randomly sketching anything, scribbling. Maybe it's a perspective, maybe not. I just wanted to, um, come on and just, uh, share a little sketch time with you guys. Like I said, I've been— I have not been on, I think it's been over a week, and that's unusual for me, but I was down, down for the count with, uh, sinus infection, blah blah blah blah and more blah. Um, and sketching makes me feel unblah. I just did not have energy to do it. But I'm kind of forcing myself today to get back on path and throw some ink on paper. So we have some snow falling. I think we're expecting a couple of inches. I am hoping for a delay tomorrow. That would be kind of cool. Snow day would be better, but, uh, I'll take what I can get. Hey, D-Ray's in the house! Snow, keep it over there. I will keep the snow here. D-Ray, I hope you're doing well. Always great to see you. Um, I appreciate you popping on and always being so positive. Yeah, my camera is acting funky. Um, I I think there's a setting I'm going to change. Hold on a sec. Let's— let me uncheck that. I think we'll be good now. All right, I think I had to turn off a setting. It was— camera was going in and out, so we should be good to go. I'll start on some watercolor. It's okay to, uh, sketch on paper, paint on paper, and not know what you're going to paint or sketch, right? I think it's just getting, getting that creativity getting that stuff out of your head onto paper, and that's always the fun for me. Let's grab some lemon yellow. Lemon yellow, here we go. Not looking so lemony because I'm using dirty water, and that's cool. I don't mind that. Hey Laura, great to see you. Hope all's well. Or it's been a while, good to see you. So I'm just grabbing colors that are, you know, in my palette, typical colors I go with. No rhyme or reason. Let's see, let's, um, grab some blue. D says, are you on Facebook? Yes, so I am, uh, on Facebook also. Guys, I am sorry for my, uh, voice. Holy moly. Yeah, D says vocal cords are covering. I am Yeah, I have, I have like no voice. I went back to school Friday and it was so, so hard teaching. I have to go tomorrow. It's going to be hard again, but I'm going to pop in and I don't know where my voice has gone. It's crazy. Laura says, hopped on Facebook, saw your notification. Doing well enough. Oh good, well I'm glad you saw my notification. That's so cool. Yeah, I think I have a low streaming signal right now, so I don't know how clear it's— I'm streaming to YouTube and Facebook right now. It is good to be on here. I did miss you guys. Um, I think I'm lagging a little bit here and there. I apologize if, if I am lagging. I'm kind of liking the colors happening here. Maybe we have some lag landscape in the front here. Cool. Hey, Jason Horvath. Jason, hope you're doing well. Great to see you. I've been, uh, following some of your progress. Awesome stuff out there. There it is, my thumbs up. Thank you, D-Ray. Wowzers. All right, this is cool. So just a, you know, very loose, loosey-goosey abstract city scene somewhere. City in my imagination, um, maybe a park in the front. We need— I'm wait— I'm waiting for that spring weather, so got a little bit of greenery here to maybe nudge that along a little bit, a little bit sooner than later this, this year. Um, let's see, so that's some watercolor, some Sharpie. We'll throw some other colors on here. We'll wrap up I'm only gonna be on for a few more minutes, I think. Again, it's been a while and I'm so glad to be here. Um, and I apologize. I, I want to come on more often and I just got knocked off my feet with this stupid stuff. Um, let's see, I got some colored pencils. We'll break out Sunburst Yellow or the orange. Hold on. Somber Yellow. I like this color. I feel like the lights are not doing my colors justice. Um, I got— I have a new setup here, I gotta adjust the lighting. Um, so colors are probably not as vibrant on your screen as they are in reality. Let's look at the pink. Yeah, I don't think they're as vibrant on screen. I— what else we got here? Process Red. I like— I have not used this color in a long time. It's called Process Red. Um, don't know why it's called that. Can I get on cam here? Sorry, it's blurry. Anyway, I love the name of it, Process Red. Be interesting to find out how it came out, or how, um, they came up with that name. You're welcome, Jason Nicholas Nicholas Nicholas! Oh my gosh. All right, let's— uh, let's throw down some color pencil to zoom in, see how this is drying. I kind of, I kind of have a little bit of perspective going back this way, a little hint of it. Maybe some sunshine's illuminating here on this part of the sketch. Let's see. Usually I like to wait to add colored pencil, wait till this is dry, but No patience. I have no patience for that right now, so we're just gonna throw it on. Sure, what the heck, let's just do it here. I'm listening to, listening to some, uh, very nice cinematic music based on the music of John Williams. He has composed so many movies, it's incredible. I'm a huge fan of movie soundtracks. I like the color, um, this process red over the yellow. I kind of like the color combo that's happening. These are regular colored pencils. They don't really like, um, they don't like being put on wet surfaces. That's why this is kind of light here and it's, it's drier and darker here, but the paper is more wet here. I'm going to let the music talk to me here. I'm just going to move the pencil. All right, zoom out a little bit. Cool. There you go. Looking like seismic activity. Laura— yes, Laura is our seismic activity expert. Um, it does look like seismic activity. Now we're just following the music, so let my hand kind of go with the flow and see what happens, being loose, abstract. So it's pretty funny you said that. I love that. Okay, not so much now. You guys are awesome, love the comments as always. 8:18, I'm gonna wrap up at 8:20, I think. Got some Harry Potter music playing here now. Cool. All right, cool. Let's, uh, throw a little bit more color on here, and I think we'll wrap this one up. So again, this is just loose, loosey-goosey, out of my imagination, throwing lines on paper, throwing down some color. No rhyme, no reason. I just want to have some fun, get back in the, uh, the groove. All right, cool. I'll zoom in so you can see how this is drying. Well, let me get a drink. Yikes. All right, here we go. Um, this is kind of cool, just a quick fun loosey-goosey sketch. Zoom in. Can't beat the soundtrack, the original title from Superman. Mm-hmm. This is an amazing piece of music. I love this sunburst yellow color. Check out how it looks here. Yeah, it's not as vibrant on screen. I got to fix the lighting for you guys. It's pretty vibrant here in person. Of course, uh, no sketch is complete without some Neon pink somewhere. All right, let me know if you guys have any final questions or comments. I'll take a look in the chat before I head off. I really love the color combination of, um, let me see, um, I love the orange with the chartreuse here. It's actually a really very cool color combo in person, um, and also this Sunburst Yellow on here as well. This is a really cool little area happening with just, just the colors. Let's grab some Neon Yellow. Aha, there we go. All right, here's the overall. I kind of like it, actually. I do want to pop some of the building outlines, um, out with black after it dries. So, um, either a Sharpie or, um, actually I've been using— I've been using a lot of— I'm using the Sharpie Creative Markers a lot. So I have a black one on the table behind me. I might use a black, uh, creative marker on here— excuse me— to pop these out. Pirates of the Caribbean, more amazing music. Mm, maybe this is a harbor. Maybe it's a city. We have a harbor area here, so maybe this is actually water. What I love about these, um, very abstract cityscapes is that it allows my brain imagination to really fire up, and I'm creating like a kind of a world in my brain right now of what's happening here. You know, this music is helping to inspire it. Definitely could be a harbor area in the city somewhere. There's some kind of port. So I— this one might not be done. I might be revisiting this after it dries. Cool. All right, let's see if there's any final questions and/or comments. Again, if I'm lagging, I'm sorry guys, I have really bad internet connection. And if my voice is lagging, it's because I'm not feeling hot. I am starting to feel better, uh, which is great. So I'm on the road up uphill again. Um, oh, Indiana Jones, this music's fire. I just want to keep sketching. All right, let's see if there's any final questions, comments. Laura says, Jason's signature pink. Oh yeah. I am so happy I started using this color. I don't know, guys, how long has it been? 2 years? 2 years now? I'd have to go back, go back to the videos. But yeah, I love using a touch of this neon pink, as you guys know. This is a cool little scene. All right, do zoom in and pan around and wrap up. We'll sign off. You can see how this is drying. Here's that color combo. I don't— 4G is not really showing up as awesome on camera, but right here is that chartreuse on the orange. It's, say, magnifique. I love the combo. You can see it's still wet there. Um, these are my windows on the buildings, just scribbles, right? Just quick indication of some kind of windows happening. I didn't take the time to draw every single little rectangle. It's more of just an impression. I think of it as shorthand. It's kind of a shorthand, um, shorthand way to sketch windows. Mhm. All right, cool. Do I have a mat nearby? Let's see, let's see. I just got this mat. Let me, uh, see if I can open it. Alright, let's put a mat over this and take a look at it. So zoom all the way out so we can see with the matte. Let's see. There we go. I kind of like it. Let me know what you guys think. Do you like this one? With the matte on. Now I kind of want more of the skyline. Let's see, I'm just kind of moving the frame around a little bit. Yeah, I think I like— I think I like that framing of it. All right guys, thank you so much for watching on this Saturday, February 2nd. By the way, was today Groundhog Day? I don't remember. Um, I don't know if it was Groundhog Day or not. If it was, or it still is, uh, I'm hoping for an early spring arrival. That's just my personal opinion right now. But, um, yeah, but who the heck knows. D-Ray says thank you. Glad you're feeling a little better. Thank you so much, D-Ray. Thank you for watching live and always being there and commenting and being positive. Appreciate you so, so much. Laura, it was awesome to see you in the house as well. Well, not in the house, but in the chat. You know what I mean. It was good seeing you out there on Facebook land. Um, who else? Jason popped in as well. Jason has a great name. Do I need to say anything else? Yes, and apparently that cubby little marmot saw his shadow. Oh, he did. Wait, so if he sees his shadow, what does that mean? 6 more weeks of winter? I forget. Um, well, spring is a season, but it could also be a feeling inside, so If I want to bring that spring in, bring spring sooner, I will bring spring sooner. And one of the ways you can do that is through your art, through your creativity, through the colors that you use. So using vibrant, bright colors is a great way for, uh, my brain to say, hey, we got some spring going on in here. All right guys, you're awesome. I appreciate you all so much. I always love your, who you're watching and your comments. You're amazing. Thanks for bearing with me through my, my not feeling well. But don't let this stop you from being creative. You guys are amazing. Take care. Remember, use your creativity for positivity. Peace, and live creatively. I will see you fairly soon. Thanks guys, take care. Laura says that was supposed to be chubby. Oh yes, the chubby little marmot. Gotcha. Take care. Awkward wave till the man hits the finish button. Can I just say, be like, hey Siri, hit finish for me? But that doesn't work on my computer.
