Sketching Final Touches on Holiday Inkspired Scene

Jason Nicholas sketches the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree with Sharpies, watercolor, and neon pink backlighting. He works through composition choices like a sepia background and implied crowd, finishing a mixed-media piece he'd started earlier.

It, It, It. All right, guys, I think this one is done. So this is three, I think video three of the sketch I've been working on on this amazing holiday. Happy Holidays. Merry Christmas. It is. Yeah, it's Christmas day and I'd do some live streaming. Just do some sketching today and nice, peaceful, kind of relaxing day. I like the way this turned out. This was inspired by a photo I took of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. When the heck did I take that? Last Saturday. Last Saturday. So kind of my take on the tree and really I wanted the main star to be the tree itself. So the background, the buildings are kind of there, but not there. Right. Not a lot of detail. I'll zoom in so you can get a close up of it. We'll see how it's. How it dried. ICD Ray over on Facebook. Hey, Merry Christmas to you also, hope you're doing well. Thanks for tuning in live. So let me zoom out. So this is kind of. That's as far out as I can go, actually. Just bring my camera up a little bit, get a sense of it. So this is mixed. Mixed media paper and it's a mixed media sketch. We have everything from. Let's see, we have a little roll call here, a little checklist. So we use Sharpie, of course. Always use Sharpie. Right. Watercolor as well. So you want from Sharpies. We have some watercolor. We splashed on a little bit of this Inferno orange ink. Just a little bit on the tree. What else do we break out? Broke out the Sharpie creative markers. We broke out the Windsor. Let's see. We use a sepia Winsor Newton watercolor marker and a SAP green, I think. And some water. Not watercolor pencils. Correction. These are just regular color pencils on here as well. It's a little bit mixed media. I'm really liking this. It has a cool vibe to it. It actually goes with this one here. Kind of a series I did this year. These two trees, NYC inspired trees. This is the Wall Street. The Wall Street Christmas tree. And then we have the Rockefeller center here as well. Let's zoom in and see how it looks even closer. There we go. You may have noticed I was throwing on some white somewhere. It's over here somewhere. Some white creative marker. And just trying to create the idea of maybe some snow falling. We'll just kind of tap in some of this here. I love these creative markers. Probably one of my. I don't want to say best finds. I guess I didn't really find them, but one of the best Tools I used this past year for sketching. There we go. So you can kind of see the snowfall there. I like the sepia background. I wanted to create kind of a very gray, wintry kind of day feeling. I'll pan up a little bit. I really like how the tree came out and I loved kind of the back lit look with the neon pink. You'll see I did the same thing on this one as well. It just adds a cool kind of subtle vibe to the tree, gives it some, some dimensionality to it, a little more interest. And then these are heads of people kind of in the foreground here looking at the tree. There's some color onto some of them. I really love these, these gray, blue, brownish kind of colors I used on the buildings. So I was just mixing up my own watercolor using brown and blue. And I got these kind of interesting kind of colors happening here. Just a fun way to treat the background of the buildings rather than. I didn't want to add windows and any details, really. I want them to be a total backdrop to the tree, which I'm hoping is popping out on the final sketch. Come down a little bit here. Get a little tighter on it. Awesome. All right, so that's going to wrap up the 2024 Christmas tree sketches. Normally I do one. This is. I still have 20. This is2023 here. This is totally for my imagination. And it's kind of fun to see the styles from 2023 to 2024. Big difference from last year to this year. I still love this. I still love the black and grays and the green tree popping. But also I'm feeling kind of fall. These are more fun for me. More energy, more movement, more color. That's it, guys. So thank you for joining me on December 25th here. Christmas Day.
