Sketching For A Few

Artist Jason Nicholas sketches a wonky barn-lighthouse hybrid with tropical elements using Sharpie, markers, watercolors, and colored pencils. He layers turquoise, neon pink, and aqua to build depth while narrating his process and troubleshooting a failing marker.

Hey, um, happy Saturday, October 26th. Hope all's well. Yeah, just, I'm on just really for maybe 20 minutes or so, real quick. I have a workshop at 8 o'clock tonight, but I wanted to come on and do some sketching, warm up a little bit, and make sure the stream is working and all that good tech stuff. Anyway, I hope you're doing well. Let me know how your Saturday is going. Um, here's just a fun little kind of barn sketch doodle I started the other day, and I'll just play around with this for a few minutes. So I'm using a Sharpie. This is mixed media. It has watercolor, it has some Creative Markers on it as well. Um, I thought it'd be fun in this size, just sketch some shrubbery or something in the foreground. Yeah, so this, like I said, this is a quick sketch. Got quick loose kind of lines happening on here. It's all coming from my up here in my noggin. Um, this almost looks like a lighthouse. So I have a lighthouse on here now. I love sketching lighthouses. Love it, love it. I think I'll be— I think I'll do a whole workshop with sketching lighthouses. That would be really fun. Yeah, but tonight I'm excited for the sketching wonky barns workshop. Um, have a nice turnout, so it'll be a lot of fun. Just trying to make this look curved, so I kind of curve that line down and I have these vertical scribbly lines to help show the contour that maybe this is curving a little bit. And these are windows here. So maybe it's not a barn, maybe it's some kind of lighthouse building somewhere. Yeah, maybe, maybe it's somewhere tropical. Let's do a palm tree over here. I'm feeling, uh, little tropical weather here. There we go. Well, it's not tropical weather here in New Jersey, but on the sketch I'm feeling tropical. That palm tree is too straight. The trunk is too straight on that. So we're gonna— I like my palm trees will have a little more bendy to them. So I'm able to do, uh, let's do— let's just do one over here somewhere. They get more bendy. There we go. There we go, got more of a bendy kind of palm tree happening in the foreground. And if I zoom out, you can kind of see, see the scene there. And I'm just adding some vertical lines, add some character. Maybe there's some kind of a siding on here, some kind of vertical boards happening. I'm going to leave this white. I like the white space there, so we'll keep that white. And I think this Sharpie is— I don't know, it's still going. I think it's almost on its way out. Grab another one. One of these is not working. I think this is the one that definitely isn't working. I keep putting it back in my pile over here instead of throwing it out. What am I thinking? Um, this is cool though, has kind of a little tropical vibe to it, right? That Sharpie's not working. Strike two. Oh yeah, these weren't working yesterday. I got to I have to learn to throw out Sharpies when they're not working, but I'm gonna have to reload. But I have some over there, but let's just, uh, grab a Pilot Precise Pen. There we go. Again, just some kind of vertical siding on that, maybe. Cool, right? I don't have comments on— maybe If you want to say hello, feel free. Pretty cool. I'm going to leave a lot of the white space you see right here, but let's see, what else do I want to— let's break out some— I have some watercolors here. Let's dip in and add— I love turquoise, so we're going to throw down some turquoise here. Throw a little bit on the lighthouse in the back here, just so it pops a little bit. And we'll throw maybe some more here. Uh, let's grab some orange. I just want to touch this roof a little bit here. I don't want to color the whole thing. You know, to help keep things looking loose, I like to leave a lot of kind of unfinished space. I definitely want to hit the top of that lighthouse tower, so, um, let's dig into I just picked up some of that orange, and maybe it's a little fainter because it's kind of in the background, so it's not as bright as the yellow that's here. I mean, yellow, the orange that's here. Holy moly, I'm calling yellow orange, or am I calling orange yellow? Cool. Yeah, I like the way this looks. Let's throw down some color pencil, then I'm gonna head over to Zoomland for the workshop that starts at 8 o'clock. Let's see, I have some neon yellow color pencil here, so let's throw some of that down. You know, add a little bit more. We have some yellow happening here as well, just to kind of add some color. Maybe tie that together, you know, throw a little splash here. Of course, we have some neon pink. Which neon pink makes its way onto probably 90, 95% of my sketches that have color. So it's almost, if not more, it's kind of a— it's become almost like a signature color on my sketches. But I'm liking this, it has some really nice like tropical vibes to it. Um, and we also have some light aqua. And I think I just want to add a little bit more color in the foreground. I'm going to dip into some watercolor, going going to grab some green here. I just want to kind of just touch it down here a little bit. There we go. Just want to give a little more of a setting, a little more anchoring. The building kind of looked like it was floating, so by adding some more green here, it just kind of anchors it down a little bit more. And there you go. All right, I think that's cool. That's just a quick, uh, little sketch here tonight. Just fun, loose, quick, wonky. Um, lighthouse-ish and tropical-ish. All right guys, thank you so much for watching. I am headed off to Zoomland for my workshop. Have a great, great rest of your day. Take care.
