Sketching the Rockefeller Center Tree

Artist Jason Nicholas paints a loose watercolor of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, starting with a crowded foreground and gray buildings, then layering Sap Green for the tree. He works through the sketch as a mental break, shows off a 3D-printed custom Sharpie box he designed, and plans two more watercolor passes to refine the piece.

Hello, hope you're having a great day, um, or evening. It's Sunday, December 20th at 10:31 PM and my pup is barking in the background. Um, just on for a few minutes. I want to do a start a sketch tonight inspired by Rockefeller Center, the Christmas tree, iconic New York City holiday view and location. So I thought I'd just do a— yeah, just kind of rough it out maybe. And I'm only on for a few minutes before I head to bed. Just sketching sometimes a great way for me just to change my state of mind and just, uh, a fun way to wind down for the night. So pardon the, uh, my pup barking in the background. This is going to be very fast, um, quick, loose sketch. And we'll do the tree somewhere in here. I was fortunate enough to be, um, in this location last week. It was so, so crowded, but I did get to glimpse the tree and, um, take a couple of pictures, quick pictures of it. Yeah, it was definitely iconic, a sea of people, but it was fun. It was festive and everything you'd expect from a busy New York City winter holiday. I'm gonna leave the buildings in the background just kind of blank, I think. Um, yeah, let's just sketch. Let's see, a bunch of people kind of in the foreground here. We'll just sketch some heads in. Just to show that there's kind of a crowd happening here. We have some flags that were in this area as well, so we'll just kind kind of sketch those. Hope you had a— hope you're having a nice holiday season. I'm back to school at the end of the week, so I can enjoy a few more days off here, um, much needed. And let's throw a little bit of color down on here. So I'm just going to grab some water— oops— some watercolors. I'm going to mix some blue and brown together. We'll kind of mix our own grays, and this will be the backdrop. Um, this will be the buildings in the background. I really want the tree to kind of be the star of this one. And this is just the first layer. I'll come back, um, probably a couple more times to add on top of it, bring out some details, add some other colors. And it'll really pull things together when I do that. I am not painting the actual colors that were there. I'm just kind of going with my gut and just kind of going on the fly, creating the fly here. I think it's enough watercolor. I'm gonna let that dry. Um, let's see, I might leave it where it is for now. Cool. If you're watching on YouTube or Facebook, feel free to say hello, check in, let me know if you have any questions or comments. I am on unusually late. Um, I started to 3D print something and kind of upsketching while it's 3D printing. So I had some fun just designing a quick box. Actually, I'll show you. Um, so I kind of had fun just designing and 3D printing this box today right here. So it's to put my Sharpie Creative Markers in. And what's cool about it is if you look on the side, you can kind of see I have these cutouts here. And that's just so I can kind of rest the markers on here as I'm using them. So I thought it'd be fun just to 3D print this today and, um, test it out. It's working pretty good. So I'm actually printing a lid for it right now. Right, cool. Uh, let's see, I was trying to think out loud. What else do I want to add on here right now? Um, maybe we'll add a little bit more to the tree. I'll just break out, use some Sap Green from this Winsor Newton watercolor marker. This is just a— this is a base coat for the tree. Um, when we're done, you're not gonna see a lot of that green coming through because I'm gonna be adding some lights and things on top of that. Actually, I'm lying. You might, you might see a bit of that green coming through, but it's not going to be totally green. It's going to be like kind of this sketch here. So this was also inspired by Rockefeller Center, just a different viewpoint of the tree. I really like how this one came out, so I'm just doing another kind of sketch. a different view, but I want it to have the same vibes. But that might be it for now because I want this to dry before I add anything else to it. Awesome. All right, I think that's it for now. Um, this is just part 1. I will probably do 2 more layers and finish it up, and if I don't do them live, I will post them as videos. Thank you for watching, have an awesome rest of your day, and happy Monday tomorrow. And we're getting closer to 2025, how cool is that? All right, keep using your creativity for positivity. Thanks for watching. This is Jason Nicholas with The Inkspired Life. Appreciate you guys out there so, so much. Um, before I finish off, let's just kind of see how this is drying. I'll zoom in a little bit. Um, I like— I kind of like what's happening here. It's really interesting, kind of the hard edge happening, kind of a blossoming or mushrooming of the colors going on. You see it here as well. I like the way this color is looking here, the way it's mixing. So yeah, I like how loose this is. If you notice my— look where the watercolor is, it is outside the lines, right? And that's fine. That adds to the quick, loose style I like, not trying to stay within any guidelines. So that's it. Yeah, so, uh, quick peek out how this is drying, and I'm gonna wrap up. Till next time, keep using your creativity for positivity. See you guys, be well.
