The (INK)spired Life - Architectural Sketching

Jason Nicholas sketches the Brooklyn Bridge with Sharpie roller pens on watercolor paper, working from a crooked upward angle. He uses hatching and scribble techniques to build depth, keeps it black and white to match his emerging NYC aesthetic, and talks through his process while engaging with viewers.

Hey everybody, happy, um, Monday, October 23rd, 9:54 PM. Hope you're doing well. I'm on really, uh, really briefly just to do a quick sketch. Yeah, I see some thumbs up, already. That's so cool. You guys are awesome. So, uh, let's do some sketching. And tonight I'm going to sketch, um, one of my most favorite iconic New York City landmarks, uh, the Brooklyn Bridge. So let's kind of put some pen down on paper and see how it goes. See, D-Ray is in the house. D-Ray says happy birthday. Thank you so much, D-Ray, I appreciate that. Thank you. Yeah, today is my B-day. Um, it's always great to have one of those. Um, but yeah, so today's my birthday. Thank you so much, I appreciate the shout out. It's all good. So I'm thinking too much here. Let me just sketch. And I'm actually starting with a Sharpie roller pen, something I'm not used to using for sketching, especially on cold press watercolor paper. So I figured we just play around and see how it goes. Yeah, so I hope you guys are having a great day. I had a nice, mellow, relaxing birthday, which is awesome. I'm not one to really make a big fuss about it. Maybe when I hit the big 6-0, I'll make a fuss, but I won't tell you when that's gonna be. I still have a little ways to go for that one. So I'm gonna just keep sketching here, and I'm thinking too much. Sometimes when I think too much, the sketching doesn't flow and kind of just a little off rhythm. Which is fine. At least I've learned to recognize when I'm just not in the sketching groove. It's when my brain says, "Oh wait, do this, or don't do this. Maybe you shouldn't do this. What are you thinking, kiddo?" My brain starts telling me all the signals. I know I'm thinking too much. I just like to be— get myself in a flow and just let loose, throw down some ink, as I like to say. And, um, yeah, that's how I have fun, and that's how it's therapeutic for me to do this. Linda H is in the house. Linda H says hello. Hello to you too. Hey, Deborah's in the house. Great to see you, Deborah. A long time no see. Good evening and happy birthday also. Hey, thank you so much, I appreciate the birthday shoutouts, guys. You're awesome, it's good stuff. So I'm just picking kind of an interesting view of the bridge here, looking up at a funky kind of angle. I thought it'd be interesting just to sketch, sketch it from a different perspective than I usually sketch. But I think I'm going to break out my other, um, let's break out my Sharpie. This is my Sharpie extra fine point. Let's take this one. I feel like when I was working with this, the point is just so fine on here that my brain was telling me, 'Hey, you gotta be detailed because that point is so small.' I know it's out of focus a little bit. So that was part of the issue I think I was having when I was starting to sketch here. Instead of just grabbing what I go for and I know best. But it works better when there's actually— when there's ink in the, uh, marker. Let's try another one. Got a whole bunch here, man. My Sharpies are— it must be— it's really dry in this room. I think it's affecting the Sharpies. I'm just gonna do some kind of hatching, hatch lines in here, some little scribbling just to give some depth. The bridge hap— the bridge going on. Um, we're gonna do the same thing on this side here, kind of just hatch this in, give some depth to the arch. Just by doing that, we're starting to create a little bit of a dimension to this, which is fun. One of my new sayings is if you can scribble, you can sketch architecture. And I'm starting, starting to believe that for sure. A lot of this is kind of just scribbling, make and mark making. There you go. So now, now my brain's feeling kind of in the groove. Just took a few minutes to kind of set in. And this does look crooked. It's intentionally crooked on the paper. Um, I just want a funky angle of the bridge, so I'm not— the camera's not crooked. It's not supposed to be like that. I'm literally sketching. I'll zoom out and show you. I'm actually literally sketching the bridge crooked. Because I want this angle kind of just looking, looking up at it. Hopefully that makes sense. D-Ray singing to me happy birthday. Thank you so much. Did you have ice cream yet? Yes. You know me well, guys. I already had— I did have some ice cream cake. That was, I have to say, my only requirement on my birthday. Used to be two things. Ice cream and pizza. We just had pizza the other night, so tonight was just ice cream. So ice cream cake is my absolute fave on my birthday. You guys are funny. That was good. That was a good call. You're welcome. Thank you. What's your favorite ice cream? Ah, D-Ray, great question. I have to go with Ben Jerry's. Ben Jerry's is my go-to ice cream. Um, and I have to— if I had to pick one flavor of theirs, it would be Chunky Monkey. Chunky Monkey Ben Jerry's has kind of been my staple favorite for a long time. Although I have to admit, they are coming out with more and more different, um, brands. In the supermarket of ice cream, which is really cool. But Ben Jerry's is definitely my go-to. And I just want to indicate some of these stones around the arch here, kind of like that. Boom. Yep, we're on with the Sharpie. Should we, should we start refrigerating them? Um, what are, what are we refrigerating? I'm not sure what we're refrigerating. Ice cream? No, no need to refrigerate the ice cream. Sharpies? Oh, should we start— are we starting to refrigerate the Sharpies? Here we have kind of the guardrail down here, which is, um, just kind of an X-grid here. Oh, I'm off— sorry, I'm off the camera there. There we go. Cool. We got some lines, structural lines of the bridge kind of going out this way. We have our— let's see, they're kind of like this. We have our cables coming off that way. We actually have cables in the background here as well. Kind of happening there on the bridge. I love the Brooklyn Bridge and I'm hoping to cross it again real soon. And hopefully this fall. I'd love to get back into NYC this month. If not this month, definitely November, and I'll— I know I'll be there in December for sure, right before Christmas. We'll be going to see a show, which will be cool. You know, there's just sketching some of the stone kind of happening here. What's fun for me with these kinds of sketches are just adding the layers of lines, and that starts adding some of the texture, showing some of the material. And I kind of pull out the bridge a little bit, so I'm going to grab— something I've been doing lately is grabbing a thicker Sharpie, and then we'll just pull out some of this here, kind of silhouette the bridge a little bit. Oops. And I want to stay loose, so I'm going to hold it far away here at the end. Light grip, handshaking, which I love because adding to the kind of the character I want of the sketch. Let's darken the arches here as well. You can see just by adding the Sharpie, it's starting to pull these shapes out a little bit more. I don't want to get too crazy and start putting this everywhere because it's it'll take away. That might be just enough, just to pull out some of the shapes. Actually, I'm kind of liking this sketch. And it also helps if you put the right cap on the right marker. That goes on that one, that goes on that one. Um, You can be as crooked as you want. Thank you so much. Yeah, this is, this is definitely crooked. I'm liking it. Can't wait till liquid diet is over. We have one more week of soft food. Hey D-Ray, hang in there. I hope you are doing well. And, um, yeah, hang in there for sure. Let's all send positive vibes your way. Linda H says, "Hello, Deborah." Hello, dear. You guys are so friendly out there in friendly land. Oops, did I pick up the Sharpie that was— I think this is the Sharpie that it's almost time to say goodbye to. And I'm not gonna spend that much more time on this. Just popping on really quick tonight. I do have to get ready for bed. I have school tomorrow. Yes, I have school tomorrow. As much as I love teaching, I could use a day off. I am so tired, but that's all good. Now let's just get some of these cables back in here also. This is cool. I like this. I like this view of the bridge. It's just a little piece of it. I like just letting it kind of bleed off here. Uh, lately I've been doing a lot of black and white. Sketches and not adding color, and I'm kind of liking it. So I think I'm going to keep this one black and white for now. As you will see, here's another one I just did recently. So you can see kind of the black and white theme. I'll zoom out. Oh, thank God, I can't zoom out anymore. Let's move that. So I kind of have this black and white NYC theme going, which is I think it's working out really well, actually. Pretty cool. Thank you, much needed and absolutely appreciated. Hey, D-Ray, it is the least we can all do. You're always so, uh, supportive out there in chat lands. We, we really appreciate you. So please, yeah, hang in there. I hope you get well real soon, for sure. Linus is awesome looking. I'll take that. I'll take it. Yeah, pretty cool on series, right? I have a bunch more black and white NYC— actually, what I need to do is take all of my NYC sketches. I have a bunch around here and just kind of spread them out and put them out there for sale. So if anybody's interested or knows anybody who might be interested in getting some small original NYC sketches, let me know. Uh, let me put some of these out there for, for sale. I don't know if I'll do bids or just kind of sell them as, as is without bidding, but I would love to clean some out just because they're sitting around here and I feel like they should be out there so people can enjoy them. I, I do enjoy them, but not when they're just piled up here. So let's get them out to people that really might enjoy them a little bit. There's a kind of a horizontal piece here, a wire. Maybe I'll sketch that really lightly. Yeah, there we go. I'll just leave it just that one mark across here. Sweet. All right, time to put the pen down. I'm going to back away a little bit here, I think, from this one. The man says as he adds more lines. All right, I'm putting, putting the pen, the Sharpie down. All right guys, let me know if you have any final questions. Um, yeah, let me know if you have any more questions or comments before I wrap up. It is 10:10 PM on October 23rd. So 10, it's 10:23, 10:10 PM, a lot of 10s right there. I should end at 10:23 on 10/23. That'd be kind of fun. Um, the race is drink, keep hydrated. You are very comfortable tonight. Thank you, I, I'm feeling comfortable. What, there's thirsty. Um, alright guys, hey, I do appreciate y'all so much. Thank you all for watching. If you're on YouTube, thank you so much for giving me a thumbs up out there and for sharing the videos. It really does help to get other people to watch it, which is fantastic. And if you're in Facebook land, thank you for liking this as well and putting the word out there. It also helps. No, I'm not going to sketch it. I just noticed something and I am looking at a reference picture I took. I'm not— I'm going to leave this though. I'm done. I'll zoom in and get a close-up. Back off this one, thank you. Yeah, I am backing off. Here's just a close-up. And you can see, and like I said, if you can scribble, you can sketch architecture. If I could get closer, You see kind of the scribblyness, especially in the hatched areas here. Scribble, scribble, scribble. But that's the part that excites me. I just love looking at all these different lines on here. It's so much fun to make. Ta-da! All right, thank you guys again. I appreciate you all. Have an amazing rest of your Monday night. Enjoy the rest of your week if I don't pop back on and see you. And yeah, peace, live creatively. See you guys real soon. Take care, and thank you for the birthday wishes. I really appreciate it so much. Take care, guys. D-Ray, I am looking for the finish button, I swear. I swear. Not like swear, I'm not like cursing, but I I promise I'm looking for the finish button. It's here. Linda, it's great seeing you. D-Ray, great seeing you. Uh, who else do we see? Deborah popped in for a little bit, so thank you guys.
