The INKspire Life - Architectural Sketching - W 44th Street in #NYC

Jason Nicholas sketches W 44th Street in Manhattan live, using Flair pens, watercolor, and neon markers to build loose architectural drawings. He talks through his process of bleeding ink and adding color washes, shares stories about walking the city, and emphasizes how spontaneity and bright colors make a sketch pop.

Hey everybody, hope you're doing well on, uh, this Wednesday night. Good to see you. I see, um, looks like Livescope on Instagram. Awesome, great to see you.
Hope you're doing well.
So, I am just working on this sketch I started last week. Last week? Last weekend maybe? And I'm just adding some lines, some details to it. So, I'm not gonna be on too long but I just wanted to do a little bit of work on this. Hey, I see Jason's in the house. Good to see you. Jason Nicholas over on Facebook says, "So I saw your Imagineering book today, then looked up this book online and read about someone who wanted to be an Imagineer but never did. I then told him my story and how similar it was to his. I thought, wow, I'm reading..." Awesome. Jason Nicholas Nicholas, that's so cool. I'm glad that the Imagineering book kind of connected you. That's awesome. Great to see you out there. Kari, I see— I saw Kari K was on there. Kari K from Instagram, great to see you. Hope all's well. So I was just using probably one of My personal favorite markers ever. I know a couple of other artists, I know Ru, Michael Han, loves these as well. This is a classic Flair pen from way back when. And you know it's an old school Flair because of the ridges on the barrel. You can hear it. You can't get them anymore. You can get flares, but they really— they change them up. They're not the same as they used to be. And I sketched with these all the time in architecture school. So, it's awesome to see them kind of back. Well, not back, but it's awesome to have this one that I can sketch with. So, really cool. I'm going to bleed some of this. Let's see how it looks. I'm just going to grab some water. Aqua Brush maybe. I'll use this. I was going to grab an aqua brush, but I don't have any within reach, which is kind of weird. All right, just throw a little bit of water on this. I don't think I'm going to add too much to this because I really like the loose line work and the blocks of color. So my gut's saying don't really add a heck of a lot. I'm just going to bleed this Flare ink here. Maybe I let it dry too long, so some of it's not going to— there we go. I just want to soften it up a little bit. Cool. And we'll soften this up. These are water towers, so I'm just going to throw some water here just to Give them a little more shape, a little bit of shadow, some curvature. I threw— excuse me, I threw down some contour lines on here, these curved lines, just to give it a roundish kind of shape. Yeah, you know, sometimes you just gotta go for things, man. What's, what's there to lose? Just go for it. You don't know until you try, right? Yeah, I'm gonna actually stop bleeding that ink. I think there's enough down on there. Let me zoom out so you can see kind of a little bit further away. I like the shapes that are happening on here. I don't— maybe I'll throw a little bit more color on there, but that's about it. I do want to pop some yellow, so let's grab some lemon yellow out of here and we'll just throw down some lemon yellow. I just want to punch up some of the brightness on the actual thing. Hey, I see Scribbler over on Instagram. Scribbler, how are you? This is so fun. I love when you guys are popping on. Don't be afraid to say hello if you're showing up. It's all good. All right, let's throw down some lemon, lemon zestiness on here. So I'm just loading up the brush, loading it, because I just want this yellow to kind of pop in your face. Boom! Imagine a lemon just kind of popping. There we go. All right. I don't want to overdo it. I just like some of those touches, a little bit of freshness happening. Um, just throw a splotch there.
Boom.
What do you say, should I just back off? Back off the yellow? My gut's saying back off the yellow. Back off the yellow, mister. All right. Enough yellow on there. I am going to punch up some of this. I don't even know what color it is. It's like a metallic purple. It's a sample I got somewhere along the way. I wish I knew the name, but I just want to throw some of that, just deepen it a little bit in these sections here. Throw some water down. Let me— I didn't, I didn't get these things going before I came online, so water is going to kind of got to soak in a little bit here. All right, here we go. Um, so I do have some on here. I just want to throw a little bit kind of here. And maybe some in this building as well. Where else? I feel like I need a pop. Maybe somewhere here.
There we go.
All right, cool. That's enough of that color. Hey, Linda H is on YouTube. Linda H, great to see you. Hope all is well. And then let's pop— let's brighten up. Hmm. I think I want to punch some orange in here. Let's punch— punch some orange. Is it orange or orange? Who says orange? Let me know in the comments. Do you say number one orange or number two orange? Orange you glad I'm asking? Get it? Orange you glad I'm asking? All right, cracking myself up.
It's all good.
Gotta have fun, right? I just sometimes just tell myself the worst puns to keep myself going. Sometimes you just gotta do it. All right, cool. I'm actually gonna blot some of this out down here. I went cray cray, a little cray cray down here. Yeah, I like it. I think I like it better lighter. Don't be afraid to blot stuff out. Number 2. We got some 2s. We got some oranges. Excellent. I'm an orange, not an orange. I didn't know if it was just a Jersey thing to say orange.
Orange.
Now I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. I'm so confused. I'm so confused. Boom. Yeah, there we go. I don't know, guys, um, let's punch up a little bit of turquoise and wrap this bad boy up, I think. So let's see, where's turquoise? Yes, it's been a long week. A very good week at school, but a long week. As you guys know, I love teaching, but It just knocks me out in a good way. All right. I got some turquoise. Let's punch up some of this turquoise. Just some like pops. Where do we want to pop it? I don't know. My brush keeps going here by itself. So let's just listen to the brush. Go where the brush says. And you'll see how this dries. It'll— you'll be able to see that pop. It'll make a difference. Cool. I'll just zoom out so you can kind of get an overview of what's happening.
All right.
I think I popped enough turquoise on there. Hey, I see Eagle Scout on Insta. Hello, Eagle Scout. And I see Joyce on Insta. Hey guys, great to see you. Welcome to The Inkspired Life, hope you're having a great day today. Feel free to say hello over on Instagram. I don't know, can you— and also, if you can share Instagram Live, let me know. I don't know if you can share it out. Cool. All right, guys, I think that's enough watercolor. So here's the palette. I'm going to get ready to add my final punch of color, which I'm sure you guys know by now what color I'm going to throw down. You know what color I'm going to throw down? Put it in the chat. Jason Nicholas Nicholas says, I walked the bridge from Chelsea Market to the Vessel once. Very interesting area. Yeah. So I've walked the High Line in that area. You may be talking about the High Line. I love the High Line. It is, it is one of my favorite places to go in New York City. I just love wandering there. It's an incredible place to take a walk. So if you're in New York City, I recommend going to the High Line. It's amazing how they took these, this old railway system and converted it into an exciting public elevated public park. So Jason, I totally get that. I've done some sketches along the High Line. I'll definitely be going there this spring and back in the summer. I might even, you know, I might even head to NYC this weekend. It's supposed to be warmish, like in the 50s. But only if I get my schoolwork done. All right, so I'm popping down some of my neon pink. I love to use this color, just throw some splotches down. So I'm using a lot of technical terms tonight, like splotches. My music just like cranked up over here by itself. We got 1, 2, kind of 3 areas of pink happening. I'm gonna zoom in so you can you can see it closer. There you go. Lucky to be so close. Yeah, I, um, I have to agree with you. I'm, I am very lucky to be so close to NYC. Very, very lucky. And I have to say, I'm loving it more and more every time I go. I know a lot of people have a lot of bad things to say about NYC. But, um, it's like everywhere, it has good places and bad places, and I know the places to go. And I just love— I love the architecture. All right guys, this, this one might be done. I'm afraid to do more to it. If I do anything, it would be to pop out, maybe bring some of these outlines a little closer. Let's actually just break out the Sharpie and we'll do that. We'll just pull some of these buildings a little forward, maybe. So notice I'm holding the Sharpie, not holding it down towards the tip because my lines would be super tight. I'm going to hold my hand further away from it so I have flexibility. It can be kind of loose and sketchy with it. And this says, and/or rainy. Yeah, yeah, there is some rain. Um, I don't— I wouldn't mind walking around in the rain. That doesn't bother for me. Um, also, you know, I think if I go on a nice— on a rainy day, maybe less people walking around. Never know, but we'll see. I have, like I said, I have, uh, some priorities, some, some actual work I need to get done, like grading. I have an architecture project that I really need to wrap up and another one I need to start, so got a lot going on.
All right, cool.
All right, so I'm kind of fussy. Let me just outline this. Thinking too much instead of just sketching. So when I find myself thinking too much, that means my sketch isn't going to be loose like I like it. So it's going to sound strange But I'm stopping. I'm trying to stop thinking, clear my brain for a sec. I'm going to come back and just sketch, just sketch, just sketch. Otherwise, I'm trying to be too tight. Like, I'm here, I was being really fussy, trying to trace the lines. I don't— that's not what I want. You guys see me sketch. I like quick, loose, fun, listen to the music, get into the groove. When I— my architectural drawings, that's the time for me. That's the time to be technical. This is my fun, creative, loose time. All right, I'm gonna zoom out. There is— there's one area of this I don't like. Um, rest of it I like, and I'll tell you why I don't like it. Uh, Jason's not a fan of Subway pricing. More cameras in the city, less crime. So subway, yes. Um, I haven't ridden the subway in a long time. I'm, I'm a walker. I pretty much walk to where I need to go. Um, and the ferry, I like to do the ferry. But yeah, I'm a walker, man. I just love walking around that place. Linda says Barbie pink. We got it. Boom. Alright, so let's wrap up. I always like— I don't always do it on air but I always like to have a takeaway, something I learned about what I sketched. So, a lesson here, I got too muddy down here in this area. Bring out a frame. Excuse my cough, I need a drink of water. It's dry in here, I have my heater on. Excuse me a second.
Back. All right, perfect.
So this area right here got too muddy for me. I was throwing down way too much stuff. I should have just left it. So I'm not too cray-cray about it, and it's— for me, it's distracting, but it's not a problem because when I sketch, I like to sketch Sometimes areas are much bigger than they need to be because you can crop things out if you want. This isn't the right size frame opening, but I could crop, you know, I could crop this into many different scenes or areas. You see that? Let's see, you know, so I can do something like this, right? We turn it horizontal, maybe want some of the water towers. We can even time to do something like this. Sorry, it's off camera a little bit. So, it's cool. I'm cool with it. So, this is me just getting a little too carried away. But it's not making— it's not breaking the sketch form. It's just a learning lesson. I do love the colors on this. I think the colors on this are fun.
It's cool.
Kind of COVID the piece over here. If I do something like that, this will look really cool just in a black matte. Um, yeah, black matte. So, uh, awesome. All right guys, I don't know if you have any final questions. I'm gonna wrap up. It's just after 8:30. Um, just jumped on tonight. I was gonna finish this kind of quietly, but I figured I would jump on, say hello. Jason says you have a nice colorful style though. I do like water types. Oh, thank you so much. I appreciate that. Thank you, Jason. I appreciate your words. Yeah, I'm, I'm pretty happy with this. You know, awesome, awesome-ish. Um, what else? Piling up these sketches here like crazy. Oh my gosh. I have like 40 hanging up over there on my wall. Now I gotta add these. There's no room on the wall. So, I need to start selling these sketches. Um, Copper Building. Love it. Some of you guys saw me working on this one. St. Patrick's inspired. Definitely not the colors inside of St. Patrick's. This is just a fun piece. Then we have my Baltimore sketches here as well. This one, this is one of my favorite sketches of all time right here. This one, I really, really, really love this sketch. So this is probably— this one will be a keeper, I'm sure. Alrighty, hey guys, thank you so much. I appreciate y'all. For watching on Instagram, Facebook, and the YouTube thing. The YouTube thing. I hope you guys enjoy the rest of your week. Maybe I'll pop on later on.
We'll see.
But, uh, Jason, thank you so much for being out there and commenting. It's always great to see you. Uh, best of luck. Linda H, I appreciate your time as well and your positivity. Thank you so much. Um, I don't think anyone else was in the chat. Thanks guys, appreciate y'all. Keep paying it forward with positivity and creativity. Take care guys, peace, and live creatively. I'll see you soon.
Take care.
For the finish button, I always hear D-Ray's voice in my head. He's always like, where's the finish? He's like, find that finish button. D-Ray, if you're watching the replay, just found the button. Take care. Thank you very much,
