The INKspired Life - architectural sketching

Artist Jason Nicholas sketches a self-portrait from a Brooklyn Bridge selfie using Sharpies, fountain pens, and watercolor inks. He rarely draws portraits, usually sticking to cartoonish characters and architecture, but pushes himself to build creative muscle by working outside his comfort zone on Wednesday and Friday evenings.

Hey, Chip is here on time. Great, great to see you, Chip. Um, yeah, especially— it's hard to be on time, especially when I I don't give a time. Pretty bad at that. Although I have to say, I am trying to go consistent on Wednesday nights and Friday nights. I just gotta lock in a time. Typically it's gonna be around 8:30 or 9 o'clock, somewhere in there. So great to see you. Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm. Let's see, what else do I wanna grab? I think we'll start with this. Hello, happy Wednesday, March 27th. Hope you are having a great, great, great day today. I am popping on, trying to be more consistent with my sketching schedule during the week, that way you guys can find me. I've had people ask where and when. So hopefully this is a good start. Tonight I am sketching totally 120% outside of my comfort zone. I'm actually going to start and I'm going to sketch a person. I'm going to use my own picture here. I don't sketch people other than the Whistling Cowboy, which you guys may have seen. Kind of a cartoonish kind of character. But I thought it'd be fun just to try to sketch a portrait or a face in my quick loose style. We'll see what happens. Um, so I see Chip, great to see you. Linda H over on YouTube, hey Linda, hope all's well. Great to see you as well. All right, so let the music go. I'm gonna just do some, uh, like I said, sketch. We'll see what happens. It'll be fun. And then I might come back to the iris I started, or we'll do the building. Actually, here's the picture I'm using. I'll put it on screen. So I'm going to take a picture of kind of a selfie I did when I went to go visit the Brooklyn Bridge. It could definitely use some Photoshopping. Um, but yeah, let's just sketch, have fun. Maybe we'll throw the bridge in the background and Like I said, I don't sketch people, so I guess the point is I want to show you that don't be afraid to step outside your zone. It builds creative muscle. It could be fun. I'm scared as heck. I don't care what it looks like. I just want to have fun with it. And I'm using a Sharpie. So for me, a Sharpie equals no erasing. It takes courage and guts. Creative fortitude. I like the way that sounds. Creative fortitude. Just throw something down. All right, let's do this. I'm talking too much. Gosh, my hairline has really receded over the years. I don't like looking at myself. That's another story. Here we go. I need crazy music. This, guys, I'm going to— bear with me. DB's in the house. DB, awesome. Bear with me, I'm going to put on some wacky, fun, crazy— it might be a little loud for some of you guys. Especially this time of night, if you don't want to rock out. I have a playlist here that's kind of peppy, maybe a little rocky. I'm just going to play and go for it. I just want that kind of creative energy. It might be wacky. I don't even know what it's on here. All right. Is my Sharpie ready to go? Nope. Heck, we're going to use— we're going to use the Lamy. Here's the Lammy. It's already cray cray. What the heck is this guy doing? I'm trying to look at the, uh, the sketch— I mean, the photograph, not me. I have not studied anatomy. This guy has some crazy hair going on. Funky ears. Oh my gosh, this is supposed to be sunglasses. This is fun. Notice I purposely picked a picture with sunglasses so I wouldn't have to draw eyes. Little cheat code there. Can't miss the nose. This guy's got a pretty big nose here. Wow. I'm making myself look really old in this sketch. Looking mean, looking angry. Got some kind of spiky hair going and we're going to bleed some of this ink and have fun with it. Yeah, this is fun. Just a quick way to loosen up, sketch something you've never sketched before. That way there's no preconceptions. You don't know where it's going to go. I think I need more hair. I just aged myself by about 40 years. All right, let's go. We're going to do a little comfort zone here. We're going to sketch a little Brooklyn Bridge in the background. So this is interesting. For me, buildings are like people. Each one's unique, has its own personality. I love sketching architecture because it it sits still for a very long time without moving. So it's easy to sketch. It doesn't complain back to you and say, oh my gosh, you made my eyes too big. So that's one of the fun reasons I love sketching architecture. There you go. Get the Brooklyn Bridge. Let's throw down some water. And if you're new to the channel, you're just watching for the first time. Yes, I keep having a disclaimer. I have never— I should say never. I have rarely sketched people. Let's just throw down some ink, some water. This is Lamy ink, so it's going to bleed in a cool way. My face is round, so I guess One way to start if you want to do portraits, and again, I don't do portraits, but I'm imagining you would start with the overall shape of maybe a head or a face. Mine's definitely more of an oval shape in the photograph. This here is long and narrow. Nice to see I have some grays going on in my hair, I mean. I want to pop some blue on here. I like the blue of the sunglasses. DB says you stopped. Oh, did my stream cut out? Let me know if my stream cut out. I'm not sure what you mean, what it means I stopped. Um, YouTube's been saying, uh, cutting out parts of my stream. They're saying I'm copyright issues, but I'm— I am paying for this music I'm using, so I don't know if that's what you mean. Maybe they cut me out or cut my voice out. I want a blue Pilot Varsity pen so I can bleed some blue ink here. So this is a Pilot Varsity. I may have to go if there's a tech issue. I may have to check it out. If anybody else is having tech issues, or let me know what's going on. I have no clue. Cool. But this wouldn't be a Mija sketch unless I threw down some colors and inks. So let's go for it. Let's grab— let's grab some watercolors, throw some fun colors on here. This is just a quick, fun, loose warm-up. Give myself kind of a blue— maybe some kind of blue shirt happening. I don't know, we're just going to use the yellow, yellow, throw some orange, get really crazy. Let's make it muddy. Let's throw some attitude on here. Make it grungy. You guys know I like grungy industrial vibes, so let's grunge-ify this, this dude. Heck, we're even going to make some— we're going to make the Brooklyn Bridge orange. Alright, here we go. Have just a quick little fun warm-up sketch. D-Rays in the house. D-Ray, great to see you. Fun warm-up sketch, guys. So again, I never, ever sketch people. You could see why. I thought it'd be fun just to do something. When you do something different, like you sketch a different subject, it totally gets your creative brain in a different place. And I thought it'd be fun just to loosen up with something totally OTB. Wait, OTB, out of the box. OOTB, out of the box. OOTB. Just trying to be cool with my neck and the abbreviations. I don't even know what I'm saying. All right. All right, cool. All right. That's our fun warm-up sketch. Let's put this aside. Let's— I have my Iris I started last night over here. Iris, you are here. V2.0. I believe it goes this way. You ever— I believe this is— no, it goes this way. This is the top. It goes this way. Let's zoom in. Let's throw down a little bit more color on this tonight. Now that it all dried up. So this is a week of just thinking out of— not thinking outside the box, sketching outside the box. So, it's almost a building architecture free sketch week. Video stopped but you are back. Oh, hey, thank you for telling me. I'm not sure what happened. I hope the audio is working. Let's go back to a different playlist. I mean, anyone want to listen to a holiday playlist? We're gonna put this on. Um, I want to— okay, I clicked the world playlist. We're changing everything up tonight. What I did not do is I wanted to mix some purple, but I still didn't get my blue. Watercolor paint in here. Um, no worries, we're going to break out— I think I have something over here. I have a lot of stuff here. I'm just going to pull out— we're going to use, um, some Daler-Rowney Aquafine watercolor ink. This is ultramarine pink. Called Ultramarine Pink. I don't know if you can see the label. It— well, let's throw some down on here, see what it looks like. I drew you with a baseball cap on backwards. The picture is small on my phone. Uh, DB, that's awesome. Anything you drew is gonna be a huge improvement over my person I drew, and thank you for adding a baseball cap. Because yeah, I always have messy hair. Boom. All right, so this is watercolor ink. It's called Pink. It's look— it looks more purple to me. Are you guys seeing purple or pink? It's looking more purple to me. Let's, uh, I'm just gonna dip in and go. I'll show you guys. I just want to move this over. I'm dipping in Bellin. I should probably be careful. I should pour some out in a separate container. I should use a clean brush. Um.
