The INKspired Life - Empire State Bulding - Architectural Sketching - Livestream

Artist Jason Nicholas sketches the Empire State Building view from Penn Station live, starting with Sharpie outlines and building up with watercolors and inks in turquoise, orange, and purple. He chats with viewers across platforms, takes their color suggestions, and shares how New York calms his mind while discussing plans for a New Year's Eve sketchathon to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Hey everybody, happy December 29th. Hope you're all doing well. I'm on, uh, for a few minutes here. I think I'll do some sketching tonight. And yeah, just— and I'm hearing my voice back in my ear, so something's up with the sound. But I'll keep moving, moving ahead. Hey, Sally for Art joined. Hey Sally, great to see you. Hope all is well. Let me, uh, start the music here. There we go. Awesome. Alrighty then, all these awesome buttons and stuff. There we go. All right, cool. I'm not hearing myself, that's a good thing. All right, so tonight, uh, I see Linda. Linda's in the house. Great to see you, Linda, as well. Let's do some sketching. So I am going to sketch, um, just a little perspective kind of sketch here based on NYC. So let me get this thing rolling. Let me know if you guys have any questions or comments or if something with the tech is not working. So basically the scene I'm sketching is, um, it's inspired or inspired by Penn Station. Then looking towards the Empire State Building. Keep it fast, quick, and loose and see where it goes. And I'm going to start with the Sharpie. I'm going to throw a quiz out there for you guys. For those of you that have been watching me, why do I usually start with a Sharpie?
Curious.
Curious to know if you know why I start with a Sharpie. I think I know. I hope I know. This building here is actually Madison Square Garden, which is neither a square nor a garden. So that's kind of this in the background here. We have a high-rise building happening in here as well. Come across kind of the line here. I'm going to skip a little space. There's a little narrow slot in the distance, kind of back in here. Back in here, we're going to see the Empire State Building. There's rising up, so I want to keep this fast and this wonky. It's kind of the spire of the Empire State Building. Hey Linda, hope all is well. Hope is all is well with, um, with Joe. And, uh, yeah, again, positive thoughts.
I hope everything's going well.
Back in here's the Empire State Building. Some other buildings in front of it. Um, there's actually a construction— there's a— yeah, there's barricades here, so kind of construction happening on the sidewalks, so we'll sketch that in maybe down here. Very cool place to go to. Yeah, would be awesome. Oh, Sally said no more Facebook account stolen. Nice to see you. Hey, nice to see you too, Sally. I'm so sorry that happened to your Facebook account. That's— thanks. Oh my gosh, I'm really sorry that happened to you. I know it— I hear that quite often, that like people are hacking into people's Facebook accounts and It's just ridiculous. So again, yeah, that does stink, but it's so great to see you here on, on the Instagram part of things. So I haven't really been streaming on Instagram too long live. It's only my second time, actually. Hopefully the connections, everything's working out and you guys can All right, cool. Um, I think, I think I'm gonna throw down some color on this sketch. Luna says, thank you for asking, op was 4 hours. We will come home sometime tomorrow. Oh, that's awesome. Great to hear.
Sure.
I'm thinking about adding colors. I don't know if I'm going to add color to it yet or not, so just keep working on this and see where it goes. I love the Empire State Building. Just so iconic. It is so— it is just so incredible in person to see. I was at the top of it a long time ago. I have to go back there and go back up to the observation deck. I think there might be two levels there. That would be pretty fun. It's just one of those things that it looks great in photographs, but you have to really got to see in person.
Building happening over here.
She comes across and steps up a little bit here. Another building in the back here. A lot happening here. That kind of had a funky beat to it. I mixed up my playlist a little bit today, so I'm not sure what we're going to get going. Yeah, I'm digging this. Hey, Deborah's in the house! Deborah, great to see you, long, long time. Hello and Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you as well. Awesome to see you, so fun. I like you guys all pop on, makes it more fun for me. Although I love sketching, but sketching live here on Facebook and YouTube and Instagram is much more fun. Got peeps to interact with. You guys are all amazing. Thank you for tuning in. Let me know if you have any questions or comments. This is some kind of concrete barricade thing happening here on the street. There's a construction fence going on here. I'm looking at a picture I took. Um, this was last time I was in the city. The time— I think it was the time before that. It was either in December or November. There's a construction fence kind of happening here. I think I'm feeling some color on this one. On my wall, did I— I think I sketched this view once before.
Let's look at my wall over here.
Huh, that's so funny. I sketched this view once before. I'm gonna pull up— I'm gonna bring over the other one. I'll show you. I did. So fun. Um, it's actually— it's a similar view, different photographs. You can see kind of the same idea happening here. So it's interesting to put them— two sketches next to each other. I totally forgot I did this other view, then it just popped into my brain. Um, since this one's black and white, I love the black and white here. This, I think it came out really cool. This was a view further down the street. I'm guessing there were no barricades there at this time. Since this one is black and white, let's, let's throw some color on the other one, have fun with it. Why the heck not? Hey, D-Ray's in the house! D-Ray, great to see you. Hope all's well. You guys are so fun. I love you guys popping on. Um, I'm just moving here, moving some windows. Let's, let's click on the playlist here and keep the music going. Deborah said you are hard to catch at times. Hey Deborah, I know I'm like a fish, hard to catch. Yeah, I don't have a regular schedule, which is— I tried doing that in the past. And here's the scoop. I'm just— let me get my watercolors over here. Whenever I have a regular schedule, I feel like I have to kind of be prepared with like a lesson plan, which is great, you know, when I'm teaching in school all day. I feel like I'm more creative when I come on at random times, and my— I don't know, I just feel like I don't have the I don't have a plan, so I can just kind of be really, really loose and more creative and more on the flow. So that's kind of why I just do these Inkspired Life lives at really random times. So I'm sorry, um, sorry about that, but the replays are always available on YouTube and Facebook, so feel free to check those out. All right, I'm gonna grab some ink. We have some watercolors happening here. I'm actually going to use— I have some ink here we're going to use. I keep pulling up my sleeves. Yuri says, going with color. Oh yeah. Chip says, home now. Hey Chip, welcome back home. Hope you had a great, great visit. It was awesome connecting with you on our call. Um, looking forward to the summer when we get together. That'll be so fun. Until then, I'm sure we'll keep in touch via the phone, email, and all that stuff. All right, let's just throw down some color. I'm not— this is a color, it's ink, it's called Rusted Rivet. Where do we want to throw down some Rusted Rivet? Uh, here, just threw some on the Empire State Building. So, you know, I don't really put colors on for realism. I'm not trying to match what's there, just going kind of going with the flow and what I'm feeling. Hopefully that makes sense. Just want to kind of throw it on, be kind of loose with this. Gotta throw down some splatter, capture the energy.
NYC, there was—
got it. Glad you're— you are on. Glad you're on when you're able. Hey, thank you. Yeah, me too. I love being on here doing this stuff, dude. If I could do this full time I make, you know, make like a living doing this full-time, I would absolutely, absolutely be doing this. This is my thing I love doing most, and it's even more fun when I get to share it with you guys. All right, cool. All right, so we got some color down there. Let's dig into the watercolors. Hopefully you can see that okay. I'm gonna dig in. I'm gonna throw in some turquoise. I loaded up some some turquoise in here. So there we go, some, some in there, a fresh batch. And I love turquoise with any kind of like rusty color. Um, they really just, it's just so fun the way they go, go together. And I think it was Chip that had noticed not too long ago that, um, the color palettes I've been using— so Chip, that was a Really good call, you picked that up. Oh yeah, I'm digging this.
Look at that, it's cool. Very, very fun.
Loving it, loving it. I love when you guys say hello to each other in the chat. Um, I'm gonna go for orange. I'm running low on my orange, so I might have to dip into— uh, let me get my other palette out of here.
Let's see.
This is, this is my oldest Winsor Newton watercolor palette. I've had this for a long, long time. It's gotten a lot of love, and there is some orange in there if I need to dip into it.
Perfect.
Start with this one first. So I'm just digging in right here, or I should say dipping into some of that orange. We're gonna put this— there we go. My sleeves keep rolling. I can't paint with my sleeves down, sliding down. All right, um, where should we throw down some orange? Don't think, don't think, Mr. Nick. As the kids call me in school. They'll think, Mr. Nick, just throw down some color. Yep, that's what we're gonna do.
Just gonna throw down color.
If I start thinking too much, no es bueno. Because then I'm gonna start planning where I'm putting color, where I'm putting the lines, and the idea here is just to be quick, fun, loose, Roll with it. Dearest says loving it. He says, yeah, I am loving it. Hey Cameron, what is up? How you doing? Cameron's in the house, guys. What's going on, Cameron? Cameron, I think I still owe you— let me know, did I give you, um, the dates, some options for you to come into school as a speaker? Let me know. I don't remember if I get sent the dates to you or not. All right, cool. I'm actually really liking this. I don't think I'm gonna put too too many different colors in here. I do want to throw down some of the lemon yellow. I'll zoom in so you guys can see a little bit closer. It's drying here. Then it says leave it black and white. Hey Linda, I just saw your comment. Yeah Linda, I'm glad you said that. I had two of basically the same views, so I'm gonna leave one I'm leaving one black and white. I really like this one in black and white. If I just get closer, just look at the, um, they're not even hatch lines, it's more of a scribbling I did here for shading. Hatch lines are a little more precise. This is more kind of scribbled it, but I really like the way this one came out. Here's Madison Square Garden back here, this piece. And we have pen station right here. So that's why I decided to give this one some color since I had a black and white one. Throwing down some lemonade. Cameron said I actually emailed you about that. No, I didn't. Okay, thanks Cameron. I will take a look. I'm— I meant to email you. You, you know how crazy it gets in high school for Christmas break. That was very, very crazy. And I've been pretty much— I've been pretty much sick the entire break I've been home, so my brain hasn't been 100%. But thank you for reminding me. I'm probably gonna have you in it I'm thinking, I'm not sure, maybe a day where my architecture classes are back to back. That's cool. Have you come in for maybe 2 periods? Oh yeah, so let me zoom in again. Check this out. I just love how these colors are mixing here, the yellow and the orange. That's pretty cool. Gotta zoom out there a little bit. There we go. Love the colors on this one. Hey, thanks, Linda. Cameron says no worries. Well, thank you, sir. I appreciate that. If I haven't said it to you guys, happy holidays, happy almost New Year. I'm very excited for 2024. And they have, uh, some big mindset changes for 2024, and I'm excited to see where they go. All right, cool. Just threw some splatter down. It is all over my lamp thing, but this is looking kind of fun. I do feel like I need one more color on here. And that color is going to be— I've been liking purple lately for kind of shadows. So let's throw some purple on here. Hey, Kaleidoscope Beatrix joined. Hey, how are you? Great to see you. You raise like one more color. Yes. So I love that I'm seeing some people pop up on Instagram. That's so fun. Let's hear for the Instagrammers. Let's hear for the YouTubers. And let's hear for the Facebook peeps. You guys are all amazing. YouTube, I think I'm 40 people away from 600 subscribers. So my goal was to have 600 by the end of this month. I don't know if we're gonna reach it, that's okay. I love everybody that's been subscribing lately and sharing, so thank you so much. All right, I'm off screen here, I'm just mixing up some purple. Basically, I'm just taking blue and red and throwing it in here. I want a little more blue to it. Let's go, let's have a little more bluish. Yeah, we'll use that. It's looking a little more blue than purple, but I'm, I'm jiggy with that. People still say that? I'm jiggy with it. All right.
He said purple.
I did, I did say purple. Um, let's see, it's kind of a cornice line here. I just want to represent where that might be, so we'll give that cornice a little bit of shadow happening there. Where else do I want to throw it? Um, I think maybe let's do some vertical. Let's do some vertical here. Gotta be careful. I've been I've been putting my palm in wet ink and paint lately, so I'm gonna spin this around just so I don't do that right now.
I want this to be a little thicker, so—
Alright, cool. Alright, let's turn it back the other way. Ba-bum. I'm kind of liking this. I don't think I'm gonna— I don't know if I'm gonna add too much more color to it. I definitely want to come back in with Sharpie and add some hatch lines, pull out some details. Well, I guess we lived through the pink era. Um, D-Ray, guess what? The pink era is still happening. Where's the last one I did? I'll show you. Did I pin it on the wall? Uh, here, I'll show you this one. Guys, I love this. I have a, um, I used to have closet doors here. I replaced the closet door with a sliding magnetic whiteboard. I did that maybe 2 years ago on this really cool barn— it's like a barn door sliding. Anyway, on this magnetic whiteboard I have I think 45 sketches, all New York City sketches. It's so cool to see them together. Um, anyway, D-Ray, here you go. So pink still does live in my, my world. I'm loving the pink, so it'll be around for a while. It's actually on this one here. That was the last one I had pink on. Yeah, pink's still around. I knew it wasn't gone, but I love Barbie pink. Oh, have no fear, it is Still here. All right, cool. I do want to just indicate there's, um, I don't want to get too crazy here. There, this is a, this is the road here. Maybe I'll just really light, light in that purple color we made. Actually, I'll make it more into a gray. So I had that purpley purplish color here. I'm going to make it more into a gray. Take some brown, throw it in.
Not really the color I was going going for.
Should I just use blue and brown to make gray? Let's have some of that purple. We'll make it, we'll make it work. There we go. I'm gonna just throw down some of that mix right down here, and I'm just going to kind of wet it, drag it down a little bit. There we go. I just want to anchor that with a little bit of color.
All right, cool.
I like it. All right, I think that's it. That's it for the color. Next, uh, next step will be to add some ink. Eris said, hey, great to see you, how are you? It's been a while, it's great to see you on here. She says, hey, wonderful people. You know what, that's a great word. They are definitely wonderful people, love that. Uh, so does the turquoise. I hope you guys like that turquoise. Actually, I'm going to— I want to intensify some turquoise on here. Turquoise on the sketch, I feel like it pulls everything together. Oh, thank you so much. So what I want to do is I want to just load up the brush with some really heavy turquoise and you'll see what happens when I do that. Hopefully I see what happens when I do that. Not a lot of water on here, just dipped it in there quick. I just want to punch that turquoise in a couple places here. It's really subtle. I don't know how well the camera's picking it up, but That's it. I just wanted to darken those couple of places up. I had some in here as well. Cool, there we go. I'll zoom out so you can see the whole thing. Let me know what you guys think. You guys, hopefully you're liking this one. This has been a fun, fun Fun sketch. We do, Jason Nicholas. It makes it all fun. It does. I'm so excited to see all you guys in here. This is awesome. How's your family and life and art, Jason? Now we're getting deep. Um, everything's awesome. Great. We had great holidays. Looking forward to New Year's. My dog's amazing. Yeah, so thank you for asking. Everything's going really, really, really well. Hope everything's well in your world also. Sorry, I'm off camera. I gotta move my camera. Although you're not here to see me, you're here to see the sketching. How am I gonna move it? This way? This way, I think.
There we go.
Is that better? I don't know what I'm doing. There we go. I think that works. All right, so I'm gonna let this dry for a minute or two and we'll throw down some Sharpie on here and we'll wrap this one up. Um, I have a hair dryer thing.
I mean, air—
what do you call those things? An air thing I could dry this with if I wanted to. I like subtle. You were asking me, I said, oh yeah, how is your bookmaking going? That is so awesome. That is such another— that's an amazing talent and a skill, Linda, that you have, bookmaking. And it sounds really fun. It'd be cool. I would love to make my own sketchbook. That would be so awesome. All right, let's see if I can throw down some ink on here. Sharpies. I do not like to write on the wet. Well, this Sharpie marker doesn't, but let me see if I can pull a Sharpie pen out. This is a Sharpie roller. It's a gel pen. Um, the gel pen, I have more success going over wet areas. So there we go. That's working.
Let's just show some some hatch lines here. Actually want to pull this out a little bit more. Definitely want to show some more.
I, I love this. Sorry guys, you know I get excited with this stuff. Check this out right here. Pull out a frame. Let's frame this bad boy. Let's try this one. I am loving what's happening right in here on the, on the left-hand side. I mean, are those colors cool or What? That's awesome, right? Dang, this is really— this is really pulled together in an interesting way. Um, here's what I mean. If you look at the whole piece, it's a bit cold framed. I, I'm liking— I'm loving the perspective. I'm going to kind of reinforce this a little bit here, but I love that it's coming down to this kind of— we have this monumental, amazing building, right? Empire State Building. But I'm feeling like the focal point is really, which is interesting to me, is kind of this area where these fun colors are happening. So, this is a good learning lesson. I'm always thinking that there needs to be architecture as the focal point, but why can't it be a color or colors that we're being focused on, right? How cool is that? Wow! Wowzers! "I love the bleed of the colors, a lot of emotion." Hey, thank you! I'm glad you said that because I always— I'm trying to capture a feeling of New York City that I get, a feeling of energy, excitement. And I was actually talking earlier today to my wife saying that it's going to sound strange, but I think I sometimes love going to New York City because it quiets my mind. Like, there's so much stuff happening in New York City that I can get out of my own brain into the things that are around me in the city. There's so much to take in, right? So it's almost— really sounds contradictory. Contradictory. Being in a busy city, you would think would make you more frantic, but I think it, for me, it kind of calms me down a little bit. It's my brain. Um, so it's just a really interesting take on that. I'm hesitating on sketching on here because this is still wet. I definitely don't want to put my palms on that. Palms? My palm. So let me spin this around. Maybe we'll just do it upside down here.
How do I—
how do I want this to look? See, I'm just gonna do a sample because I'm gonna do it upside down. Like, I want the lines to go like that. I'll zoom in so you can see what I'm thinking here. So there you go. So it's really interesting to just to see how your brain thinks in different settings, right? Pull this out. There's not a lot of detail to the— my Penn Station building, and that's fine. I think I really want the colors to be the star of this one.
Just looking at my photo.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Let's see, maybe we'll just show some here.
Just kind of pull these out a little bit.
All right guys, I think it might be time for me just to back away from this one. Tada! There we go. Time for an air dryer. Hey, so I have this thing here. I just didn't want to make a lot of noise. I actually have this. This is a, um, dual-purpose thing. It's kind of like— I got tired of buying those compressed air cans to clean off my computers and stuff. So I got this cool thing. Um, I'll turn it on so you can hear it, but it also serves as a vacuum, so we can blow out stuff this way, or have an attachment I could put on, and we can then— we could like suck dirt up and stuff. So it's a pretty cool little thingy. So I'm going to turn it on. Warning, warning. Down to quiet, the lowest setting.
I can even move some paint around here if I want. That was cool.
And there you go. And you can create effects with it. This actually looks kind of fun. Ta-da! We got that done. Time to back away from this one. Oh yeah, the only thing really left on this one is to sign it, and maybe after it dries, just— I think I might I just want to bold some of the outline here, but I'm going to wait on that one. Get it? Bold the lines. I'm going to wait on that one. That wasn't even planned, guys. There goes the splatters. I don't mind it. I think it looks kind of cool. This one, this one I'm not too cray cray about. I think we're just gonna kind of see if we can blot any of that out. If not, we'll live with it. Part of the fun. I'm gonna pull some of that one back a little bit. That looks better. All right, I think I'm cool with it now. All right guys, let me know if you have any last questions or comments or anything else you'd like to say. Uh, I think I'm gonna be on New Year's Eve for a while. I've been wanting to do like a sketchathon and raise money for Habitat for Humanity, but I don't know if I'll do that sketchathon, but I'll try to be on for a while and, um, see what happens. Nothing planned though. All right, let's sign this one. Where should we sign it? I've been signing them things sideways lately, so let's keep the tradition going. Let's do it. Zoom in. And then I like to put the month and the year. Put it in a box. Ta-da! There we go, this one is done. Hey, Kylie Giselle joined us on Instagram. Hey Kylie, hope you're doing well. Hope you're doing well. Let me know what you guys think. We'll take a look at it as it's drying. One of the things I like to do is we'll zoom in close so you can kind of see it up. Closer and just see some of the details. Okay, we do that before we wrap up. And thank you guys for the hearts and the thumbs ups and the likes, which I guess is thumbs up. Um, I appreciate all that. That's amazing. Um, I appreciate it so much. I know it really does help on YouTube when I get thumbs up, so Oh, very, very cool. All right, so let's pan around this so you can kind of see it close up. This is really drying really nicely. I'm loving the color combos. I love the hard edge here. Very, very fun. Here we are. Awesome. I'm still really digging what's happening in here. You know what I do need? I do need some— all right, D-Ray, D-Ray, you will not be surprised. You won't be surprised. I just want some intense orange on here. So I'm just gonna really throw some thick orange. I need a little bit of water. All right, cool. Time is it? 8:30. 8:30.
Okay.
All right, awesome. So I wanted 10 intensify some of this orange a little bit. I know, I know, I said I was done. I just want to pop— we have a bright orange here. I just want to pop a little bit of— and we'll— should this one get pink on it, guys? Let me know. Would you add pink? All right, there we go. That's it. I just want to touch a little bit orange there. All right, should we add a little bit of our neon pink?
I don't know, let's look.
So here's Water Tower recently did with the pink on it.
All right.
Hey Elena, good to see you. Hope all's well. Hope all is well for sure. Awesome. Let's see, Cameron, uh, says almost looks like a painting from the 1910s and '20s of a city of the future. That's cool, Cameron. I love, um, love that interpretation. Awesome. Lena says, I like touches of pink here and there. Yeah, you know, I think the pink will make it on there. Here is a yes with the pink. He's digging into the last of the orange. Linda says, congrats, wish Wishing you all a very happy, wonderful, merry New Year. Yes, and a happy, happy New Year to you, and positive thoughts that Joe will be home tomorrow. Let me see the other comments. Peace and enjoy your school break. Yeah, I have to go back next Tuesday. Dang, let's be cold on— you have a sweater. D-Ray noticed that. Um, it's actually not that cold. It was in the, I think, 50s to upper 40s, low 50s. Um, it's cold in my house though, so I do— I hardly wear, um, sweatshirts and stuff, but I have one on, on today. Good observation. Ding ding ding ding! 10 points to you for noticing. D-Ray gets the bonus points. Uh, all right, let's throw down the pink. Officially, I'm officially closing this. You're all my witnesses. This would be a cool screenshot. Let me see if I can take one.
One.
Where's my thingy to take a screenshot? Dang, I can't find the button for the screenshot. Oh well. Anyway, uh, closing it up, putting the cap on here just so you know I'm not going to do any more coloring. Pardon my, um, arm in the way. I will not— I will not charge extra for the arm in the camera shot. That is free of charge, so thank you for joining.
Here we go.
What is my brain saying? Not really my brain, I just do this thing, a weird thing with my hand. I kind of just let it go wherever it wants. It tells me where to put the paint. Pink. Jason Nicholas telling me to travel this way with the pink. It brings your eye kind of down. I'll do a It's a really small sliver there. All right, so we got the pink. Um, there's another color combination I love. I love putting the neon pink over orange. It comes out a really cool color. So sometimes you'll see me put pink on top of orange. And now we're We're done. Hey guys, it was awesome having so many of you in the house. Mickey was on. Hey Mickey, how are you? Good to see you. Um, D-Ray says no button, your fingers are cold. Oh, I couldn't— yeah, I couldn't find the button to take the screenshot on my app here online. It's all good, it's all bueno. Mickey says greetings, Happy New Year. Happy New Year to you as well. Guys, this has been so much fun. I saw Sarah Sarge 911 had tuned in on Instagram, so thank you if you're still on there. Um, thought he zoomed in. Thank you. Yeah, you want to see it zoomed in on the way out?
Here.
So now you can kind of see the or the, um, pink, right? 1, 2, 3. Guys, thank you so much. I appreciate you all. Enjoy the rest of your Friday, and I will hopefully be on, um, Sunday, New Year's Eve, maybe at some point, and doing some sketching, uh, to start the new year. How cool would that be? Let's end this year. It's just I should say. And, um, yeah, there's a slight chance I might head into NYC tomorrow. I want to see the tree. I haven't been to Rockefeller Center to see the tree this holiday, so I haven't been feeling up to it, but, um, maybe we'll make the venture out tomorrow for a short while and check it out. Thank you guys so much. Peace. Live creatively. Keep paying it forward with your positivity. I really, really thank you and appreciate every single one of you guys.
