The Inkspired Life - Sketching & Painting : Inking Out Loud

Artist Jason Nicholas sketches a bicycle live using Sharpies, Pilot pens, and colored pencils on Strathmore paper. He demonstrates water-bleed effects, splattering ink, and layering techniques while answering viewer questions about marker properties and encouraging artists to experiment beyond their usual subjects.

Hey everybody, happy Saturday evening. Hope you're all doing well. I'm actually on kind of late, but it's all good. I didn't do any sketching today, so I wanted to pop on and just do something quick before I head off to bedtime. Hope you guys had an awesome, awesome Saturday. So I'm actually sketching something I've never ever, ever sketched. So this isn't something new for me. I am sketching a bicycle. Hopefully that's— you guys can see that's what it is. I just wanted to try something different. Sometimes it's good, right, to step out of your wheelhouse and try different things. So I figured, what the heck, why not? Well, let's see who's joining in and, uh, give you guys a shout out. Hey, Andrea is here! She says, yay, I made it here! Awesome, good to see you. Hey, Arissette's here! Aye, look at that, caught you again! That's so cool, I'm glad you caught me. You guys are awesome, thanks for popping on. Again, I know I'm pretty late here, um, not that I have a time schedule. So this is a— this is my bicycle here, and I thought it'd be fun just to play with, you know, getting some shapes. I am looking at a reference picture. Um, throw some color on here, maybe just have fun with it. It's kind of a weird angle because this front wheel is off at an angle. It's hard to get the shape of it. But I thought it'd be fun just to do a quick loose sketch. A bicycle, why the heck not, right? Got a pedal thingy here, got the chain thingy kind of going around here somewhere. Something I need to do more of is actually this summer is do some bike riding. Cool, awesome. Harris says, let's, let's be real, I'm here for the Sharpies. Hey, whatever it takes, it's all good with me. Um, just for you here, let's, let's see. All right, all right, since we're here for the Sharpies, all right, these aren't all Sharpies. We have some Sharpies in here. Let's see, we have some more Sharpies in here. This right here is the ultimate— hey, let's, let's play, let's play with that one. Let's break that one out. And I have a— we have this one here too. Yep, I'm all about the Sharpies. Just for the heck of it, let's play around with this big Sharpie thingy. Again, I'm just having fun here. My bicycle proportions are way off now that I look at it on screen. I mean, these wheels should be bigger. Let's, uh, let's just break out the Sharpie. Says— so this is Sharpie King Size. It has a chisel point on it. I think I have even a bigger Sharpie somewhere around here. I also have these Sharpies, permanent marker, chisel tips. I have a red, blue, uh, Red, blue, and orange over there. This would be cool just to kind of pull this— these shapes out a little bit. Oh, there we go. Cool. There we go. Awesome. And we're going to— let's bleed some ink tonight. Let's break out— let's use a Preppy Yellow. I love the Preppy Yellow color. We're going to use some Preppy Pink. Um, let's break out some preppy green maybe here, and we'll just have fun and bleed some ink for a few minutes. Let's do it. All right, turning the picture off. I think the bike looks cool. Your line style gives it much character. Oh, thank you. I have a lot of Sharpies, but you have once I didn't even know existed. I feel so old all over again. No, it's all good, it's all good. Glad I could, uh, share some Sharpies with you. All right, cool. So, um, let's just pop some color on. We'll actually bleed it as well, so I'm going to throw some Preppy Pink. It's a really, really— gonna put it in places, and then we'll take our brush, put some water on it, and we'll just kind of bleed the ink a little bit. Boom. Gotta move my water bottle because I will knock it over. There we go.
Cool.
All right, well, let's get even a little crazier. I'm going to actually open the pen up. I'm going to take the cartridge out and splatter some of this on here. If I can— there we go, there we go. Oops, I got some on the board, but that's fine. Gotta have— it's not art. I always used to say it's not art unless you wear it. So guys, this is officially artwork because I'm— I am wearing it right there. That's the proof. So why did I take it out of the cartridge? It's more intense that way, especially the Preppy Yellow. I'll show you what it looks like, but We'll just throw some down here. Why the heck not, right? Cool. Fortunately, I didn't mean to waste all the paint over there. So here's what the Preppy Yellow looks like. Right out of the nib here, thrust them down, and we'll bleed it a little bit. We'll put some here where the wheel is. Maybe we'll throw some up in here. I like the way the orange and yellow Preppy mixes. It's a really cool color. We'll just throw some— maybe back here, maybe a splotch up here. I gotta put— I gotta wipe this here because I will get it all over my hand.
All right.
Alright, let me show you what the yellow looks like right out of the cartridge. Big, big difference. I really prefer using this Preppy Yellow color right out of the ink cartridge. This, I'm going to try to get some splattering on here. Maybe we'll get a— there we go, perfect. It's more of an orangey yellow, which I love the color so much. Um, splatter drops— splatter drops the cartridge on the table. Yes, yes I did. I should be wearing— I sometimes call this the Shamu Splash Zone. So if you guys have ever been to SeaWorld, Shamu was the— what was he? The killer whale that they would do a show and Shamu would jump and land in the water and splash everybody in the like like the first 10 rows. So they sold ponchos, so I feel like when I do splattering, it's— I need to have one of those Shamu Splash Zone ponchos. This is cool. So I really, I really love the orange— I'm sorry, the yellow and the pink mixing. Lift up some of that pink and let's just splatter some here. Cool, that's cool. This is a fun one. 100% me. 100% me. Awesome. On, uh, I saw a recent video where the artist says Sharpies are permanent but not waterproof and advised not to use watercolors over your Sharpie sketch. I totally disagree. What's your take on this? Hmm, I got to re— let me reread. Let me reread that. Um, Sharpies are permanent, yes, but not waterproof. Okay, advised not to use watercolors over your Sharpie sketch. Um, I've never had issues, but I never paid attention to it, so it's a really good point. I'd have to look into that. I've seen some other artists use it and blend with it, use it in mixed media. Personally, I love it. Yeah, I— it's something I do all the time, and I never— I honestly don't know why I wouldn't do it, if that makes sense. It's really interesting though. I'm glad you mentioned that. This is cool. I feel like I need some blue or some, yeah. So for the, let's throw on some turquoise, but I'm not gonna use a Preppy. I'm gonna use this Varsity pen. We're gonna bleed some of this Varsity. It's like a, I guess it's a turquoise color. So let's throw some of that on here as well. Um, we should do some kind of spokes or something here. So we're going to put some blue here. I'm gonna bleed some of that blue where the spokes are. I feel like we just need a little blue just to kind of contrast with the other colors a little bit, a little bit of coolness to it. Besides me, just kidding, I am, I am not coolness. Um, there you go. So I'm just kind of touching the wet brush here a little bit. It's fun. So I just want, like I said, just want to challenge myself and do something I've never done before. And just trying to keep it quick and loose. I like the colors on there. I think what I'd like to do is kind of pull out a little, maybe a little more of the wheels with a Sharpie perhaps. I've never had a problem using Sharpie sketches and watercolor over it. Yeah, I haven't run into that either, so I'm so glad you're mentioning that. My pup's barking. Um, you guys are awesome. So I have, uh, Andrea and, and Arissette. By the way, Arissette, I hope I'm saying your name properly. Um, if not, let me know. I see you guys in YouTube. I don't see any Facebook comments. If anybody is watching from Facebook, let me know. It's weird, I usually see both comments. It's possible no one is on Facebook. I am curious. I'm gonna just open it on screen. Let's see, let's go here for a sec. Just wanna make sure I am broadcasting on. Yeah, I am. It's on there. Okay. Just want to make sure it was broadcasting. So we're all good.
All right, cool.
Let's see, what Sharpie? I'm just looking. Um, maybe I'll use this chisel tip one here. You're pretty cool. Ah, thank you so much. Thank you so much. Um, that's nice of you to say. Actually, I don't want to use this. I don't want to use a chisel tip. I want to use— do I have a Sharpie? Aha. So here's another Sharpie. Sharpie actually makes roller I don't know if this— I think this is a gel pen. So I think Sharpie makes gel pens. So let's play with this and see how that works. I didn't use the other Sharpie because it would have been too thick. I don't want to make the wheel too heavy, so I figured this kind of works. It kind of pulls it out a little bit. Usually have like a— things happening in here, right? Let's just kind of pull this wheel out. And we're looking at this wheel at a funky perspective. It's at a funky angle. Oop, this one has a little bit of a flat tire. There we go. The handlebars here. This is fun. What do you guys think? You guys like this one? It's kind of create a little background there. Pretty cool. Hey, Linda's in the house! Linda, great to see you. Cameron's in the house! Cameron, great to see you. Shout out and congrats to Cameron. You, Cameron, you are That's so awesome you passed your OSHA, um, I don't know if it's called compliance test, but your OSHA exams. So congratulations, that's awesome, and I'm excited to hear about your visit, your site visits, and what kind of stuff you do. Awesome. Uh, what do you guys think? Should I throw another color on here? Is this enough? I have green. Well, I don't know, I don't— I kind of think the colors aren't enough on that. Maybe a little bit of shadow under where the wheels hit the ground, just to ground it a little bit. I don't quite have a handle on this sketch yet because it's such a different topic. You see See what I'm doing there? Yeah. I'm just thinking in my brain. Let's bleed some— we'll just bleed some of my Pilot pen under here just to create a little bit of shadow, a little bit of depth. I should put— I just pull this out a little bit here. So let's do that and I'll bleed it. Boom! I really love that bike and the splashy colors. Hey, thank you, that's cool. I'm glad you like it. Yeah, this is fun. Again, this is like, I've never sketched a bike at all, so it's always fun, guys, to try something different, you know. Doesn't hurt to just play around and see what you can do. You know what I do want to do? I'm going to break, break out some red. So I have a Preppy Red pen. Which is pretty cool, but I actually prefer bleeding, um, this— the Pilot Red pens. I like the color better, and I just want to do back here— there's a light, or a reflector I should say, on the back of the bike, and I'm just going to put some of that red here, and I'm going to bleed it a little bit. Um, Cameron says thank you. Cameron, no worries. I think the teal is a nice balance. Oh good. I think it needs a little bit more. Would you guys agree? It needs a little bit more teal. And what I'm going to do is when I'll come back and we're going to throw in some colored pencil on top. So I'm gonna use the colored pencil for the teal. So I just want the teal to pop a little more. Alright, so we have kind of just a little splash of red. It's really small, but it's cool. I'll take it. I think I like the shadows. I think it kind of grounded it a little bit. Boom. Back here as well. So that was— that worked out. So let's, let's add some colored pencil on here. Uh, green is my favorite color. Linda, Linda is our green, our greenie. All right, maybe we'll throw some green on here, maybe with a little bit of grass in the background here, some blades of grass. Haha, you don't have a handle. Thank you for laughing at my pun. You could trike the green. I get it, like try, trike the green. You're funny. And just since you made that awful pun, I will throw some green on here for you. I just, I just did what I always say, guys, with these preppy pens. As we listen to this spy music and my dog barks, um, these preppy pens, the barrels just pull off so easily rather than the cap side. So you just got to be careful with them. All right, Linda, here's what I want to do. Let's just do some Blades of Glory— Blades of Glass— grass back here. By the way, Blades of Glory is a very funny movie if you guys have never seen it. It's got Will Ferrell And I think the dude that played Napoleon Dynamite— I know, I don't know if that's him or not, maybe, but it's a silly movie. So we got some green back there, let's bleed it. So we got our growies on here. That's cool. I kind of like that. I like the green back there. It looks like it's a little in the background, so it's pushing the wheel a little bit further— not further, but closer to us. Cool, we got our green on for Linda. Yes, growies! You got it. You could trike the green. Linda, you're so funny. You guys are awesome. Yeah, I like the green. I feel like, I feel like 007. I feel like Double O Sharpie here. Agent Double O Sharpie with this music. Let's, uh, throw some light aqua. This is a really cool color too. Um, this is called Sky Blue Light, so maybe we'll throw some of that on. Let's try it. Where do I want to add it? Wow, it's really light on the paper. Let's just throw some up here. Let's see what it looks like up here. So that's what, that's what it's looking like. I just wanted to do a little test color up in the corner. Um, a little too light, I think, for what I want to do with this, so we're going to go with the Aqua. Wonder what Olivia is barking at. She, she's not much of a barker unless the garbage truck's outside or Amazon Prime's out there or the UPS truck. She doesn't like trucks for some reason. Um, maybe she's barking at me because it's— I should be in bed now. Anyway, so there you go. So here's some of that. Let's just throw some on the wheel here. So right here I threw some on there. So we got a nice punch of the aqua, a nice punch, a nice punch here, and just a spoke or two. I think the chain's got to pop out a little bit more. Look at— what should I do with that chain?
Chain.
I didn't use any neon pink, but I have pink on here from the ink. But so we'll just kind of throw that on as the chain here. And I'm just punching out a little— some areas. Cool. I kind of like this one, guys. It might be done. The biggest wonky piece is really this here, this part of the wheel. But maybe I can— maybe this bike ran over a curb and it bent. I was riding, I went over a curb to avoid a, uh, a chipmunk running across the road. So I ran over the curb and I bent the frame of my bike, and that's why the wheels are looking like that. There we go. I just made that up, but we'll go with it. And the chipmunk made it safely across the road. And they lived happily ever after. Yeah, I actually like that. Dang, this is a fun sketch. All right guys, I'm going to have any questions before I wrap up for the night. This is a little— maybe I could pull the wheel out a little bit more. Break out that Sharpie— it's called Sharpie Roller. It's a 0.05, so pretty thin tip on there. I'm just kind of creating jaggedies, kind of a little jaggedy shape here for where the chain is, just to give a little texture to it. Cool. There we go. I think, um, yeah, you know, this was actually fun. I got a real kick— stand— out of doing this sketch tonight. Just trying to do something totally out of my wheelhouse. You know, I never get tired of playing around with colors and sketchy lines. So don't feel like you always have to chain yourself and keep doing the same thing over and over again, right? Try it. If it doesn't work out, I mean, It's like falling off a bike and getting back on. Just go for it and try it again. So I think, yeah, I think this one's done. What do you guys think? Let me know. Let me know in the chat. Do you guys like the bike? Do you think it's cool? Do you think it's, um, not cool? You could be honest. I hear someone's ringing a bell outside. Something, something cuckoo's going on out there. Um, interesting. I don't know if Olivia rang the bell to go outside. She has never done that before. Um, what kind of paper am I using? Good question. So tonight I'm using Strathmore Artist Tile. It's 6 inch by 6 inch right here. Pretty cool paper. It has— there's two sides. One side is a little bit— has some texture. You can see there. If you flip it over, the other side might be a little bit smoother. So great question. Uh, your father snapped his bike in half, so the bent wheel seems reasonable. Hey, that's good to know. Thank you for confirming my bent wheel story. Love it. Avoided a chipmunk on the road, how I bent my wheel. Thank you very much. That's my story for the day, and I'm sticking to it. Um, gotta get up early. Bye y'all, have a great day tomorrow. Hey, love the bike. Thank you, Linda, it's great that you popped on. Uh, I love how the bike came out, the combo of colors is rad. Thank you. Rad's a rad word. Andrea says agree with Arisette. You guys are so cool. Thank you so much. Let's sign this one. Which should we— should we write on here? Um, we'll sign— let's sign my name. Hey, by the way guys, why, why did the bicycle fall asleep? Why did the bicycle fall asleep? Put it in the chat, let me know. Why do you think the bicycle fell asleep? Alright, let's sign this bad boy. I might put this one out there on my Facebook page for fun, just to see if anybody wants to bid on it and own this cool bicycle. So let's put, um, I usually sign with a little heart and then I put my name, Jason Nicholas. I'll put the year. There you go. Have a good evening. Good night, Cameron. It's great seeing you. I like the bike. Awesome, Cameron. Great seeing you. We'll, um, hopefully catch up over this summer. It'd be great to see you and get together. I know you're busy, you know, working, and which is awesome, and I have a— I, um, we'll find time. So guys, the bicycle fell asleep because it was too tired. Thank you very much. I am not here all day because I'm headed off, going to bed. Thank you guys for tuning in. You're awesome. I appreciate you, um, liking this, sharing it, making positive comments, and asking great questions. Remember, pay it forward, you know, use your— use creativity for positive things. And that's a wrap. Peace and live creatively. I will see you guys soon. Take care. Enjoy your Sunday. Peace out.
