The Inkspired Life - Sketching & Painting : Inking Out Loud

In this informal live stream, artist Jason Nicholas sketches from his porch while chatting with viewers. He greets the audience, mentions his Thursday routine, and shares excitement for the upcoming weekend and school schedule. Jason describes his setup: seated at a table, using a Sharpie extra‑fine point, a Uni‑ball pen, a graphite stick, and 140‑lb watercolor paper. He sketches several quick studies of modern‑style houses with curved roofs, experimenting with perspective, line work, and minimal shading, all without color. Throughout the session he comments on ambient sounds—dogs barking, grass cutting, motorcycles, and wildlife such as deer, bears, turkeys, foxes, coyotes, and a recent coyote sighting—providing a vivid sense of place. He interacts with a viewer named Becky, praising her Elm Street painting, and acknowledges other chat participants. Jason also mentions practical matters like his porch needing reconstruction, his daily sketch habit, upcoming workshops, and a brief future stream scheduled for the next evening. The stream ends with a wrap‑up, thanking viewers and encouraging them to stay creative.

Hey Becky, hope you're having a great, great night. Hello inklings out there. I have a little different setup going on. I'm out on my porch, uh, doing some sketching here, so you might notice the screen looks a little different. But I hope everybody is doing well on this Thursday, Thursday night. Tomorrow is Friday. Yippee! I am so excited for Friday and looking forward to the weekend for sure. We're in the home stretch with school. Next week is our last week and the students have all half days next week, but us teachers have full days, which is cool. We need time to clean up and grade and all that fun stuff. Anyway, hope you guys are having a great, great day here. I'm just sketching here, um, maybe some kind of a house, curved roof on it. Sorry if my hand's kind of in the way here. You know, I have a little different setup going on. I'm actually sitting down. I rarely sit down and sketch, but I have to say my Sharpie is in good shape. Let me know what you're up to on this beautiful Thursday. Becky's working on my Elm Street painting. That's so cool, Becky. Um, I love, I love Elm Street. Such a cool scene. That's the one with the curved street, right? I love it. It's such a— it's going to be amazing. I love the black and white version. I can't wait to see it. Um, when it's completed. I love your— yeah, I just love the curb street and the trees and the lampposts on there. So cool. It's kind of hard to sketch with my hand not in the way here. Yes, the curved street. Yeah, awesome. Yes, that is such a cool sketch. You are welcome. Thank you for sharing. I love all the creativity you guys share out there and post every day. It's So cool, so inspiring. This is some kind of ambient background music. It sounds like there are rattlesnakes in the background here in this music track. It's interesting. So yeah, so I'm just sketching a house here, maybe some kind of modern house. I don't know, it's got a curved roof on it, some kind of outbuilding happening over here. Just want to play around for a little bit. So happy Thursday again. This is a kind of a just a different setup. I'm out on my porch, so if you hear dogs barking or someone out there cutting their grass, You'll know why. It's, uh, nice and cool out here, low humidity. The cat's hanging out here as well, so I figured I'd just sit out here for just for a little bit. I'm just— it's just me and my Sharpie right here. I have a Sharpie extra fine point. Pen, and I'm sketching on watercolor paper, 140-pound. There you go. I see— I knew someone would be cutting the grass. I just had 3 deer run through the yard before. They were nice to see. I wish they were running a little bit slower, could have enjoyed them more. We're fortunate enough to live in a place where we have some wildlife. We have deer around here, some bears, turkeys, foxes, and the coyotes. We have coyotes that are making a comeback in this area. I actually did see one in my yard about 2-3 weeks ago. We were coming home from a walk one night and he was sitting by our shed and then he ran away. I think we have rabbits under our shed and I hope he didn't get them. I guess it's one of the circle of life things, but I love them. They're just cute bunnies. Hopefully the picture is looking okay on screen there.
There's Simpson Lucy.
Lousy goosey sketching. Maybe there's a tree or something happening over in this area in the foreground, some branches coming off, and it comes down like this. Let me go up a little bit in my camera, maybe a little bit more. There you go. Just keeping it loose. Feels really weird sketching sitting down. I feel like I'm constricted. Zoom up, be bopping around and stuff.
Yeah, let me see.
I'm just gonna, uh, let's just put some lines in the background, maybe for some kind of sky or something. I don't have any colors out here with me, just a couple of pens. Keeping it simple. Had to get my daily sketching in, so I figured I'd come out here and just go online for a little bit. It's always fun seeing who's out there and what you guys have to say. There's a little bird's nest out here under the overhang. I'm actually sitting inside. We have a porch here, the window's open. Porch that needs to be reconstructed within the next year or so. It's kind of a seen better days. We've only been on this house, I think, maybe 5 years now, so we got to start doing some work around here, getting some things back up to date.
Cool.
Yeah, it's a cool little scene there. There's some kind of pathway going back, something like that. And I have a graphite stick. I lied, I said just pens. I actually have a Sharpie marker, my Uni-ball pen, and I have my graphite stick. I don't have any water, so I can't do anything with that. There you go. So that's just a quick little sketch, maybe some kind of house happening over here.
Let's—
we'll do another sketch. I'm actually gonna I'm gonna cheat and just flip this around and use the bottom. So, we'll do a 2-for-1 on this drawing sheet here. This will be a small one. Maybe a quick perspective or something. I'm gonna only go until 8:30 the latest. So, if you're on there, be sure you say— to say hello so I know who's watching. It's always awesome to check in with you guys. I appreciate you so much. The lighting's not the best, so I apologize. I'm using my iPhone shining from this direction, trying to cut some of the shadow out because the main light is actually behind me. This is some kind of modern house here on the hill. It's coming down here to maybe the waterfront. We got a jagged kind of hillside or something coming down here. There we go. Cool. Just a quick little modern type of house, maybe on the hillside. A boat down there hanging out. There's some funky music going on in the background. It just says chill, so I hit the chill button. So we're listening to chill music. I kind of like it. It's got a funky groove to it. Cool. So we got that sketch, and then we have this sketch here. I'm just playing around with my Sharpie tonight. Don't want to let a day go by without doing a sketch. I've been doing some kind of a sketch or painting, not always online, but I've been doing them straight for a long time now. So I just want to make sure I keep in the groove. I'm looking forward to summer. We'll have a little bit more time to focus on some other art projects and workshops. Cool, here we go. You know, I'm gonna do a real small— I'm gonna— let's see, I'm just using this one sheet of paper. I'm gonna do another sketch on here. I'm gonna do a really small one. Let me zoom in. There you go. So I just zoomed in. I think I'm just going to work with, um, just this corner up here. Oh, so you might hear some motorcycles in the background. We have a lot of motorcycles that are around here. So I have a various— this is maybe 2 inches by an inch. Rectangle here. So let's just do a little one more sketch and wrap up. I'll move this light so you can get a little better. See, that's a little better. All right, let's try this. There you go, just some kind of curved perspective.
Awesome.
All right, I think with that it's gonna be a wrap for tonight. And just a couple of sketches here. You can see it was kind of just almost like a, uh, almost like a doodle session tonight. A little perspective, playing around some curves on it here. Quick sketch of some kind of a house, maybe with a curved roof going on. And we got another little house on this side. So just a bunch of different sketches on one sheet of paper just to keep in the groove, in the creative groove. Cool. There we go. So thank you guys. If you're watching, I appreciate you. Have an awesome, awesome rest of your Thursday. Have a great, great Friday, and I will— I should be on tomorrow around 7:35 just for a short while. Be a very quick, quick stream tomorrow because there's a big event happening tomorrow night. So you guys are awesome. Take care. Thank you for watching. Peace and live creatively.
