The Inkspired Life - Sketching & Painting : Inking Out Loud

In this livestream Jason Nicholas sketches the Manhattan Bridge while chatting with his audience. He starts by introducing the session as part of his 21‑day bridge‑sketch streak, mentions his half‑day of school before winter break, and explains he will experiment with bright colors. He selects Ultramarine Pink watercolor ink, a sepia Winsor Newton marker, burnt‑sienna acrylic ink, Sharpie, Lamy, Flair and Preppy pens, and a bamboo brush. Throughout the session he narrates his process: applying ink, dabbing, lifting, splattering, mixing pink and sepia on the board, tapping the brush, and adjusting darkness with additional sepia and black ink. He comments on how the colors change as they dry, revises his initial dislike of the pink, and uses various pens to pull out bridge edges. Jason interacts with viewers (Chip, Cameron, Karen), shares a reference photo of the Manhattan Bridge from DUMBO, discusses technical hiccups with his photo library, and promises a future Golden Gate Bridge sketch. He reflects on the discipline of sketching a bridge daily, mentions selling some sketches, and plans to create a gallery of the bridge series. The stream ends with a “family photo” of his tools, a thank‑you to the audience, and a reminder to stay creative.

Hey there, guys. If you're watching, hope you're having an awesome Wednesday. It's good to be on tonight, just popping on, doing my daily bridge sketch. Thought I'd pop on and do some sketching. This is the second time I've sketched this, I think, so far. And I am looking at a reference picture, just loosely basing my sketch off of it. I hope you're having a great day. Let me know how things are going. I have one half day left of school, then we're on break. So I'm super excited. Love school, but a break would do everybody well right now. Hey, Cameron's on camera. Hope all's well with you. Always good to see you. Hope you're doing well. Alright, cool, we got a quick outline of a bridge. I am going to play around with— what am I going to add? I have— you know what, just going to have fun. I want to be playful. Just try some different colors. So I'm actually going to use this What it's called? Ultramarine pink. Ultramarine pink watercolor ink. What the heck, let's give it a shot and just play around. Camera says not doing bad, just waiting on your results from your final exam. Exciting, exciting. Yeah, let me know how your final is. Let me know when you hear— excuse me. So we're just going to use this Ultra— I'm going to use this watercolor paint— ink. I'm actually going to dip— dip it— oh my gosh, my brain is tired. I'm not going to dip it, I'm going to put a little bit in this palette here. And we're just having fun, just practicing my bridges. Haven't done any bridges with any bright colors, so I thought it would be cool to give it a shot tonight. We do have some of my dirty water. It's almost time to change it, I think, to some fresh. I have two of them, so we'll use this, put it here, and which— I will just use a big brush tonight. So I've never used this color We'll see what happens. I think I'm going to keep the bridge just Sharpie ink, and then I'm going to kind of brush some water around, and we'll use the, uh, Ultramarine Pink as kind of around the bridge just to pop it out. I'm adding some water on here. Let's see what this looks like. Let's go for it. I wanna keep it kinda quick and loose. It's called Ultramarine Pink, but it's looking more purple to me. Hey Chip, good to see you. Hope all's well. Hope you're feeling better, man. So this is the Manhattan Bridge. This is an iconic view of it from, um, it's called Dumbo. Dumbo, like the flying elephant. Um, I would love to get there one day and see it. So I'm just painting off a reference photo and just trying to capture the feel of it. And this is interesting, we'll see how this Ultramarine Pink dries. Um, I do like that it's popping the bridge out, which is cool. I'm honestly not a huge fan of the color right now. We'll see how it dries. It does say Ultramarine Pink. It's I don't know, I could see it. Yeah, as it's drying, it's looking a little more pink to me. I hope you guys are having an awesome day. I'm gonna blot some of this out a little bit. Kind of keep a, maybe a grungy vibe to this sketch. I'm actually thinking about breaking out some sepia as well. So we'll use the pink and we'll break out some sepia. What do I have here actually? This is This is burnt sienna. This is acrylic ink, so we'll leave that there. Let's use, let's use some sepia. I'm gonna use my brush marker, I think. Just grab it out of my case. Ah, cool. Alright, so I just have my sepia watercolor marker. It's Winsor Newton. And this is— I like to use it by putting it down on my board and just lifting it off of the board rather than putting it right on the paper. I feel like when I put it on the board, I can control it, or it doesn't stain. If I put the marker right on the paper, It kind of stains and I can't move the color around so much, so I kind of like to lift it off the board and put it on. I'm just looking for my brush. Where is my— where's my bamboo brush? I'm bamboozled, I can't find my bamboo brush. What the heck? Oh my gosh, that's weird. It's got to be here. I didn't take it anywhere. It's probably— oh, here, it's right in front of me. OMG, I need a break. Winter break's almost here. All right, cool. All right, so I'm just going to take some of this, dipping it in water, my brush. I'm just going to lift some of the sepia off, and again, I'm just going to throw it on the bridge. I like the color combination of sepia against purples or even pinks. And I'm just gonna kinda outline it a little bit quick, keeping it loose and sketchy. This will have an unfinished look to it, which I know Chip is a fan of, I'm a fan of as well. I mean, I could come in and add some here if I wanted, but I— for me, it just works better lifting it off the board or the, you know, or a palette. And I'm just gonna— I'm just kind of outlining the structure across here, just so it pops out a little more. Right bridge. I love this bridge. I love the kind of skeletal quality of it. It is a beautiful bridge. Ooh, my sepia marker might be running out of sepianess. Let's see how much we can get out of it. I want to just bring some of these verticals down here. Not trying to stay in any lines. So I never try to stay in the lines. That's not cool. That's not fun for me. Lines are just kind of a guide. Cool. This is kind of dark under here. This is the bottom of the bridge. So I'll add more sepia— sepia to that. I might actually end up using— let's break out the graphite stick here. I think I'm going to combine some of the— this pink with the sepia and see what kind of color happens. I just want it a little darker, kind of on the bottom underside of this bridge. So I'm going to let the two colors do their thing and kind of mix together, have a little bit of fun. What also would have worked well is I have Walnut Ink here. That would have worked really well with this. I'm literally just tapping my brush down. I'm not even doing any brush strokes, just tapping it in the wet areas, letting the paint mix together. Cool. I like this. I kind of like that little spot there. I'm gonna leave it. Got some splatter happening, which is really cool also. And I kind of— I want this area to be a little darker, so I'm going to do the same thing, just tap in some of that pink into the sepia. Under here also, just to create some depth to the structure. This will dry lighter, so I might come back later and add a little bit more to it. I actually want to add some on this side here to give a little dimensionality to it. I'm not brushing, I'm just dabbing. Not doing like this, not dabbing this way. Not the dance move. I'm just dabbing my brush, tapping it down. I really like what's happening here. I like how the brown and the pink are mixing in here. It's kind of bleeding into that area. It looks really awesome. I think this is going to dry really nicely, actually. I'm getting excited about it. I didn't honestly like the pink when I put it down, but I like how everything's working together now. So much more excited. A little bit more. I don't want to overdo it. Add a little bit more and I think I'll set it. Aside and let it dry. Where's my sepia here? Yeah, my sepia, sepia marker, there we go. Now it's coming out. It should be good. I'll zoom out, you guys can see So I'm kind of just mixing the sepia on the board here, literally lifting it off. Actually, I'm gonna mix it with some of that. Cool, Chip. I'm glad you're enjoying the bridge. Thank you so much. So cool. Alright, I think, I don't think I'm going to add more to it. I want to let it dry. I feel like the next thing I would do is come back with probably my Sharpie. Or Sharpie if I don't want it to bleed. I may even use my Lamy actually and come darken the edges with the Lamy. Maybe I'll do that now. And then maybe bleed some of that kind of around the edges. I think I have blue in here. We're gonna use whatever is in here. I think it's blue. It's a good— oh no, this is the— oh, this is the Apple Snail color. Let's try it. Sometimes you just go for it, man. Just do it. We'll see how it looks. I definitely want to pull the bridge structure out. I'm being kind of quick, my lines are loose, because I'm definitely— some wonkiness happening. I love it, love it, love it, love it. Cool. And I'm just going to take my brush and kind of bleed some of this ink on the side here. I actually like this, the color combo that's happening. I'm gonna have to come back and do this after it dries. It's not really coming out of the pen too well. Alright, cool. I'll zoom in, you guys can see how it's drying, and I think we'll wrap up. So I really do like the way these colors are drying. This is really cool, what's happening in here. I love this area so far, is looking awesome. What else is looking cool? I don't mind— I I actually like the darkness here. It almost makes me want to have more dark areas like this. I think the pop-out, especially where I don't have color on the bridge, it really makes it pop out more. Let's go up a little bit and move this so I don't knock it over. I like what's happening here as well. I like— I actually like the way this is kind of just hanging out. So we're gonna let it hang out and just dry that way and see what happens. Same thing here, we're gonna let it hang out and dry. So I'll zoom out, you can kind of see it all, the overview. Boom, there you go. Chip says, anticipating you sketching the Golden Gate sometimes in the future. Yeah, Chip, thank you for sending those photos, I love them. I'm definitely going to be sketching the Golden Gate, so I will, I will try to let you know when I do that ahead of time. I almost broke it out tonight actually, but I wanted to practice this, the Manhattan Bridge, again tonight. So the Golden Gate Bridge will be happening over break for sure. And again, thank you for the images. There's one image I really like in particular. It's I can bring it on. If you don't mind, I'll just bring it on screen here. I'll show you the one, the view I want to try sketching. Let me just move this window. Let me drag. Let me open up my photos. And I'll just drag it on screen here and you can see it. Chip says, "Oh, sure." Thanks, Chip. Where are my photos? Let's see. It's funny, it says they're open, but I don't see them. What the heck? Oh, I am, I am so silly. I was trying to open the thing, it was already open. Where is the sketch? The photo you sent, um, I moved them into, I have an album called Bridges. Bear with me guys, I'm just trying to find these images. I didn't move them to Bridges. Oh, it's in Recents. Where is my Recents? I swear they're here. Um, what the heck? Am I going crazy? Am I going cuckoo? That's so weird. I downloaded them onto my photos. I did this afternoon. Well, maybe I can't bring them on screen, so sorry about that, guys. I put them in my photos, my— on my photo album on my phone. Oh, maybe it didn't sync to my computer yet. Maybe that's why they're not showing. It usually syncs instantly. All right, once I have a tech issue, it's gonna drive me crazy until I can figure it out. All right, I'm backing away. I can't show it right now, guys, but I will pull it up another time. I just don't think my album updated on my Mac yet. It's all good, you guys know how tech— the tech world is. Chip says, "Sketch one of them. Interested to see if you picked the same one." Maybe. Actually, I can pull it up on my phone. I'll just hold my phone up to the screen. So, I am not texting in class, I swear. I swear. If any of my students are watching. So this is the image here. You guys can see it, maybe this way. So that is the, that's the image, the view I want to sketch. Chip, if you want to share what you sketched, that would be cool. I don't know if you posted it or if you want to email or text me or however you want to message me with it. I'd love to see your sketch if you want to share it. Of course. Cool for me to see. Awesome. So I hope you guys like this quick sketch of the Manhattan Bridge. It's not done yet, but I do want it to dry. Hey, Karen's in the house! Good to see you, Karen. Oh, Chip picked a different view. Interesting. I think I know what view. Alright, this is a guessing game. Chip, I'm gonna take a guess. Let me see, let me see if it's the second one I was gonna go for. Alright, this is the second one I was gonna go for. So this is kind of the classic perspective view of a bridge. You guys have seen me sketch views like this of the Brooklyn Bridge, the bridge I kind of just created out of my brain. So that's an iconic view. I love sketching. So maybe that's the one you picked. If not, this will be strike 2. Karen, it's good to see you. Hope all's well. Karen's in the house. So cool. Actually, this may have dried enough where I can come back and do a little more to it. It's 10:23. Oh my gosh, no. Oh my God, like, should I go for strike 3? Should I go for strike 3? I think there's only like, what, 2 more to pick from? No, no, I'm not— I'll leave it at that. I'll leave it at 2. I'll keep it a mystery. I'll look— I can't wait to see your sketch. Alright, so here's what I'm thinking, how I would finish this out. Definitely want to come back with some Sharpie, pull out some of these edges. I do like the color ink in here and how that's kind of nicely mixing with the other colors. Um, but it's not really pulling out the edge of the bridge as much as I wanted it to. Not yet. Alright, let's put some more Sharpie on here. I could use— I could put the black ink in my Lamy. I do have black ink here elsewhere. I have some other pens I could bleed with. Somewhere here. Oh yeah, my— there we go. The Black Preppy. Actually, maybe we'll play with the Black Preppy. I haven't used it in a while. Just make sure it's working. Wah wah wah. I don't think it's working. Oh, it is. Alright. Gotta push really hard to get the ink out. Alright, there we go. It's starting to flow better. I'll probably have to clean clean it. This has been sitting— I haven't used this in a long time. Alright, let's try using the Preppy to pull out some of the edges. No, it's still too wet. It's not letting me sketch on it. Well, that stinks. It's working up here. Kind of pull out these finials on top. Yeah, the ink is not flowing in this thing, so I am not going to use the preppy. I have to push too hard, and I don't want to leave gouges in the watercolor paper, so I am— we're going to scrap the preppy. Uh, how about Let's use a Flair pen. We're gonna use the Flair, the classic ribbed Flair. You guys may have heard our friend Ru talking about these. These are iconic. I used to sketch with these all the time in college, and I think this one works. We'll try it. Chip says the close-up. Awesome. So now I know which one is the close-up view. Alright, let me— I'm gonna change the tunes up a little bit. I don't know, what do we want? Let's put some holiday music on. So I'm just using this Flair pen. I just want to pull the edges of this bridge out a little bit more. The best bet would have been to use my Lamy with some black ink in it. Wait, what do I have in this one? No, I have— this is the yellow. I'm feeling like I need a third Lamy pen. Not to be greedy, but be cool just have a black one ready to go, maybe this color which I love, and then we'll have another miscellaneous color. There you go. Cool. Hope you guys are enjoying this sketch. Chip loves the purple. I'm, I'm liking the purple. I didn't like it when I first put it down, but I think it's really working well with all the other colors. Um, I love how it's drying. So sometimes you don't know until your ink or your watercolor dries, you know, what it's going to end up looking like. So I'm glad I stuck with it. There you go. So you can kind of see the edge of the bridge popping out as I'm just adding the Flare Pen on top. Let me zoom out, I think I'm a little too close. There you go. So I'm really loving this. The edges definitely pop. It's poppin'. We'll pop this edge out too. Maybe the top of the rail of the bridge here will pull out a little bit. Just a little bit. I don't— I really want this part of the bridge to stand out. Kind of the silhouette. I think I'm actually gonna leave it. I like it. I don't want to overdo it, so I'm gonna leave it. That was just a flare pen, so that worked pretty nicely. Cool guys! And I would add some more sepia, actually I'll add a little more sepia in here. Just to darken that up. I don't want to use black. Um, where's my brush marker? Here it is. So let's just throw a little bit more sepia. I could mix it with purple, but we're just going to throw the sepia on here. If you can count how many times I just said sepia in the last 5 minutes, let me know. I seem to like the word a lot. So I'm just kind of tapping it down here just to create a little more depth here. Kind of trying to create like a shadow. Ooh, I'm loving it! That looks really good. Yeah, that looks awesome. I don't usually say that about when I'm painting stuff, but it's actually looking so much better than I thought it would. This is, this has turned out to be one of my new faves. I'm loving this sketch. I just want to pull this edge out with some of the sepia. Hopefully you guys can see this. So I like to turn the paper around as I'm working, just easier for me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I kind of want this a little darker, but I'm afraid to overdo it. This might actually be nice to do with more purple in it. Hey, thank you guys for watching. I see there's like 4 people out there. I appreciate you guys so much. I appreciate if you comment. I appreciate you for just sitting there watching. It's all cool. Hopefully you're getting something out of it. That's all that matters to me, is you're enjoying this and you're getting something positive, whether you are an artist or you're not and you're just watching. It's all good. I like to share what's going on in my brain and how I kind of create these sketches. So this is actually bridge number 21. So I have been sketching at least one bridge a day for 21 days now. So not to pat myself on the back, but for me to stick with something for 21 days straight is not easy. I am a dude who is all over the place. So it is possible to stick with something. If I can do it, you guys can do it. And it's fun. I'm loving these bridges. I can't wait to try the Golden Gate. I'm gonna take all the pictures of these bridges that I have, and I'm gonna post them like on a gallery page. I'd love to just see them all kind of next to each other and how the sketches have progressed. So, and I've been fortunate enough to sell some of these, so thank you for anybody out there who was interested and purchased one. So thank you guys for doing that, I appreciate that. Alright, cool. So I think that's enough. When this dries, I'm actually— not tonight, but I will come back. I want to define this area a little bit cleaner with some ink on it, but it— I'm gonna let it dry. It's too wet. And we are done with this one for tonight. So we used a Lamy pen, Flair pen, or Sharpie. We used our aqua brush— I mean, not our aqua brush, our bamboo brush. We used some— this is the color I used right here. I actually just got it from Michaels yesterday. I had a nice gift card I was able to use. So this is Ultramarine Pink. It's watercolor ink. And then I used one of my favorites. I always have these on hand, my Winsor Newton watercolor marker. And that was— oh, we actually, we did use this briefly also. So let's take— we're going to take a family photo here, put everything together, a little family photo. What did I use in my paint palette too. I forgot that. So here's like, here's a little family photo of all the stuff I used. Cool. Sometimes I like to just put everything together so I remember when I come back if I want to try to recreate something. I'll know what I used. So I'll either take a photo of it or it's here on video. And there you can see Hey guys, you are awesome. It's 10:34. I do have school tomorrow, half day. Yes! Well, it's a half day, but I will be in school probably full time because I have grading I need to get done tomorrow. But, um, it's all good. You guys are amazing. I will be back on Thursday night or Friday night, Saturday, we'll see. If I know ahead of time, I'll post it. Thank you guys so much. Have a great, great night. I appreciate you. Thank you for watching, sharing, commenting, sharing some photos with me, um, and just being friendly and inspiring out there. So I appreciate y'all. Take care. Have a great, great night. It's fun music. Peace and live creatively. I'll see you guys soon. Take care. I just like to walk awkwardly, wave at the camera for a minute or so. No, actually, I'm just navigating the— here we are.
