The Inkspired Life - Sketching & Painting : Inking Out Loud

Artist Jason Nicholas sketches live with a Lamy pen, starting with loose ink drawings that bleed into abstract cityscapes. He adds an arch bridge mid-session, explaining how a keystone works structurally, then sketches a suspension bridge with cables. The whole thing is conversational and unscripted, a relaxed creative session after a busy day.

Hey, good to see you guys, Deborah and Becky. Hope you guys are having an awesome Saturday night. "Sorry I missed this. What are you creating?" Hey, you didn't miss anything. I just started, so good timing. Yeah, I am creating— I don't know. I really don't know yet. It's an abstract cityscape, I'm guessing. Usually when I do inking out loud, I'll start off with these kind of quick loose sketches. I'll use my Lamy pen, I'll bleed some ink. They usually end up being some kind of a cityscape, just kind of random crazy funness. Is that a word? So yeah, that's kind of where I'm headed with this. So I'll spend a few minutes on it, we'll see where it goes. And then I have a piece underneath I want to work on as well. Um, just got— just kind of with the inklings. Awesome, definitely Deborah, good to see you. Good time. Could you share an arch bridge? Ooh, an arch bridge. Um, you know, I'll add one on here. I'll put an arch bridge on here. Hope you guys can hear me okay. I'm talking a little bit low. It's late, some people are sleeping here, but I wanted to come on and do some creating. I've been, uh, doing some kind of research stuff all day today and getting some other work done, house chores. So I need to unwind with some creativity. So an arch bridge, let me see if I'll throw one on here. Uh, let's see, where do I— look, we put an arch on here. Actually, you know what, I could picture an arch here. Zoom in. So I'm just going to sketch. There's kind of an arch shape. Maybe we'll make this into a bridge. There's the top of it somewhere up here. I'm going to keep it quick and loose. One of the things I— we can show on the bridge to add a little bit of detail, you know, would be a keystone, right? So bridges sometimes have arches, have keystones here. My voice just cracked. Maybe it did. And then we have the other stone pieces around here as well. I'm just doing this kind of quick and loose here. And then we'll have some— maybe show some stones kind of come down the side here. And this is quick and loose. And maybe, uh, the bridge, I'll do a abstract bridge coming off like this. And we'll do like a suspension bridge. So I'll just show some cables like this coming down quick and loose. And maybe we'll have some wires coming down onto the bridge support here. So, we have kind of an arch and what I'll do is I'll take my pen, let's bleed some of the ink on there. Thank you, Keystone First. Yeah, so, I like to— yeah, I like to show the keystone first. It's usually the— it's the part of the bridge that the structure that locks the other stones in place. And I'm just gonna bleed it here a little bit. And I think, I think you had posted something I saw earlier today about the arch, if I remember right. I think, I think I've seen a post about that, unless I was like thinking ahead. I mean, so that's a real quick, real quick real quick, loose sketch of an arch. I mean, you know, I can get into a lot of detail with it if we wanted to focus on that, but maybe I'll do that as a separate— I can do that as a separate video I can post.
