Thursday Night Sketch and Chill

Artist Jason Nicholas transforms old watercolor sketches into mixed-media collage in a live stream, working with wet-on-wet techniques and cutting wet paper into fragments. He chats with viewers, shares stories from past Spokane workshops, and pushes toward 1,000 YouTube subscribers by Halloween midnight with a sketch giveaway as incentive.

Hey, how are you guys doing? It's, um, October 30th, Thursday. Hope you're doing well. 2025. Yeah, that was in no particular order, as you can tell. Um, I'm just clicking buttons over here, get ready to go live just for a few minutes, or I will say maybe until 9:30 or so. Um, hope you're having a great day today. Let me know where you're watching from. Let me know how things are going in your world today as we, uh, get ready to do some sketching here. I am, I am just trying to make sure I'm live on the Facebook side of the world. Am I? I don't even know. Well, hopefully I am. If I'm on Facebook, that's great. Hopefully you guys are doing well. I should be on Facebook right now. Um, yeah, awesome. So as we know, Halloween is coming up soon. I've been doing some, uh, spooky-ish sketches. Um, I don't know if you can see the one behind me we did last night right there. That is inspired from the Dark Shadows TV show. And then we have some other ones I've been doing this week in here as well. This one's made up. Then we have my fave, is the Beetlejuice-inspired house. Pretty cool. So tonight, here is what— here's what I have planned. Um, nothing. I have nothing planned other than, uh, I have these scrap, uh, sketches I found. I pulled them out of a watercolor pad. And I thought maybe we would just kind of do something with one of these or both of these, maybe try to transform it into some spooky house thing. So here's a really good example of just winging it, grabbing, going, creating, seeing what happens. Um, I talk about setting creative intentions, so here's my intention tonight. My intention tonight is to take old scrap sketches and to transform them. That's it. Simple, uh, kind of just a simple thing. Not a lot of— I didn't give myself a certain parameter like I need to sketch this, I need to add this color. I just want to transform this from where we're starting into something different. Pretty simple, right? So it's a good intention, I think. And let's move that over. Boom. All right, thank you guys for watching. I appreciate you all so, so much. So I'm literally just going to take this scrap and we're going to throw down color, play around with it. And if it looks like nothing, if it looks different than when I started, that's all that matters. I gotta, I gotta open my, um, my, uh, app here so I can just zoom in on the sketch. Here we go. Cool, perfect. All right, let's do some sketching, let's do some coloring, let's just do something. Got some music going. Um, maybe we'll throw down some ink. And I don't have paper towels, so I'm just going to use, uh, this as a blotter on this church sketch. Actually, yeah. All right, just want to prop this at an angle, so I'm going to do that.
Cool.
So I think this scrap is from, uh, last time I went to Spokane, Washington. I think I did a— I did like a mini workshop about just, um, sketching and urban sketching and how it was a tool. And I think this was like a demo I did out, out and about in Spokane near the place where the meeting was. Cool. And if this is not a spook, doesn't end up being spooky, uh, that's fine. I'm gonna go live tomorrow night, Halloween night, and I— my goal tomorrow night I think is to actually take the sketches I showed you before and I think I want to make, make them spookier. So that's kind of my focus for tomorrow right now. It could change. Yeah, this is from Spokane because, um, I think this is part of the, the power plant building. So it was an old power plant and now it's converted into, I think, offices and, um, like a restaurant. Really, really awesome building. We'll talk more about it. I've talked, I've talked about it in the past as well. But yeah, these were just the stacks at the from the steam plant building.
Oops.
The Sharpie's no bueno. Let's try another one. Cool, so I'm just kind of adding some lines here, just kind of taking that scrap I had and just kind of adding stuff to it. We'll see where it heads. Um, this is fun. It's just, it's really freeing, a lot of creative freedom when you're not putting pressure on yourselves for yourselves, when you're on yourself for an expected result, um, in my brain it just unlocks the word freedom because it doesn't matter where we're going. And you know what, I'm just having fun throwing down lines and color, so I'm happy right now. That's my goal. Hey Jennifer, cheers from Lake Tahoe! Hope all's well. Awesome to see you, I always love when you join in. And D-Ray, Well, also, I love when you join in. Great to see you. Hope you're doing well today. I think I saw your post from earlier today, um, about giving blood work today, so I hope you're— hope you're doing well. Thank you guys for watching. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments tonight. If you're just joining me, I just took a scrap I found that had some scribbles, sketch scribbles on it And I'm just playing around and adding to it, seeing where we go.
That's cool.
I think I'm gonna throw down some color now. Dun dun dun dun. Hope you guys are doing well today. I hope, I hope I'm streaming on, uh, right now I'm on Facebook, Instagram. Hopefully I'm on the YouTube, the YouTubes as well. Just want to double check. Um, so I am so close to getting to 1,000 YouTube subscribers. I'm at 977, 977. So My goal, my goal is to get to 1,000 by midnight tomorrow night, Halloween. So that would be so cool if it happens. So I'm sorry guys if you see me spamming my, uh, socials with messages about subscribing to YouTube. I just think it'd be so dang fun. I still done some red. Let's just, let's pop some color on this bad boy. I think this was a street sign here that I had sketched, um, on this. Looks like a street sign. T-Ray, you are welcome. Thank you, thank you for watching. I feel like breaking out some green. Let's use a green, um, creative marker. No rhyme or reason to colors. I'm just going, just grabbing and going, grab-and-go creativity. It's kind of my style. I don't have to stop and really think about what I'm doing. I'm just grabbing with what's grabbing with what is around me and going for it. Yikes, yikes. This is unscripted, unscripted, unrehearsed. That's what makes it fun. I don't want to use— I'm just looking. Ah, you know what, let's throw down some neon pink on here. Why not? Actually, this is, um, Reflex Rose. I love that name, Reflex Rose. So cool. This is acrylic ink and the cap's on really, really tight. Bear with me. Got it. Alright, zoom in a little more. This acrylic ink can dry pretty quick sometimes. So I'm just adding some water to it just to move it around a little bit. Let's break out some watercolor. And we got Splashdown! Yes, I love that! And we got Splashdown, awesome! Hey, Drawn to Sketch It, hope you're doing great. Uh, I'm working on layering colors. That is Awesome, drawing the sketch. What, um, what medium are you using for colors? Are you— yeah, what are you using? Watercolor, pencils, markers? Let me know, love to know in the chat. Let's throw some yellow. So if you're just joining me, I am— the only per— the only goal I have tonight is I found this old, um, sketch. It had some stuff on it and I just wanted to add to it, have fun, be playful. I am not trying to create anything specific, not even a Halloween spooky theme, which I've been doing all week. We're just throwing down colors, having fun, guys, and we'll see what it looks like when we're done. And I just got— what did I just put my arm in? I just got my arm all wet. Oh yeah, I put it on. Um, you guys, let me show you what I'm doing over here. I'm using this, uh, this old drawing here to clean my paintbrush off on. You can see what's happening. So I just put my arm on that puddle because I don't have any paper towels here, so I'm just using this old sketch. What the heck? There we go. Hi, Chihuahua. I am super messy today. I want some yellow, some yellow watercolor. Hey M, how you doing? Guess what I'm doing, M says. You are sketching, M, I hope. Good to see you on Instagram. Water, um, awesome. Trying to sketch using watercolors. I love that. Yeah, it's It's definitely about layers. Any— even this mixed media stuff I do here, for me it's about adding layers. Um, so when you're adding watercolor, you have a couple options. One, you can throw a color down, let it dry totally, throw another color on top of it. Um, I am more of a wet-on-wet technique. I like to just throw wet watercolor down on top of wet watercolor. Let the colors blend, bleed, mix together, do kind of their little magical creative dance. It's, uh, it's just always fun to see what happens. You can see me doing some wet on wet here, actually. Painting, painting. I love that you're painting. Oh, you're talking to M, I think. Hey Chip, great to see you. Sorry I'm late. Chip, you are not late. There is no way you could be late if I don't tell you guys when I'm going on. I, uh, it's my habit. I have not been consistent. I've consistently been going on every night, but the time has been different, so it's all good. It's great to see you again. So if you're just joining, joining me tonight, literally I found an old sketch, I had some scribble stuff, and I'm just throwing stuff on top of it. Just my only intention tonight was to transform what I started with into something different. If I had— you know what I wish I had out? You know what I'm going to grab, guys? Hold on, I'm just going to spin right around. Like doing some acrylic paint. Grab some acrylics. Grab some acrylic paint here, just random colors. Alright, let's do that. Let's grab some random acrylic paints. Um, I like doing mixed media with acrylics. I haven't done it in a while, so let's just throw some down and see what happens. And I'm actually gonna just use the paper as a palette, throw some down. Got a nice blue color. It's a little dried out, but We'll get it to work. Normally I would put these paints in like a pan, and— but I'm lazy right now, and I'm just going to dab some color on here. Ironically, I grabbed some of the same colors we're already using. That's funny, that was not intentional. All right, yeah, so basically I'm just using the paper as a palette. That is more than I need. This acrylic paint can go a long, long way, especially when you add water to it. Thank you guys so much for all tuning in. I appreciate it. YouTube's getting close, guys. I'm so excited. Getting close, getting close to 1K subscribers. Nothing magical really happens. Maybe I'll do a sketch giveaway if I hit 1,000 sketches. No, not 1,000 sketches, 1,000 subscribers. Before midnight tomorrow night, maybe I'll, um, I'll do a little sketch giveaway. That would be fun. All right, that's incentive, I hope. I mean, I guess it's incentive if people like my sketches. This— yeah, this blue is kind of— it's kind of chunky. We're just gonna go with it. I really like this, this green color. What is it called? This is Brilliant Yellow Green. Brilliant Yellow Green. We're getting a little wacky tonight, guys. Tonight is a good example of just having fun throwing color down, making a mess. I don't know if you can see me, but I have a big smile on my face because this is, this is just so fun. It's very therapeutic. If you're looking for a good way to de-stress, just make a mess and throw down some color. Don't, don't set yourself up for high expectations. There are times you want to do that when you want to grow and, you know, add to your skill level, increase your skill level. But there are times where you don't need to just set down high expectations and just do something, right? Chip is a master at, um, in my opinion, at acrylic and oil paints and pushing layers around with that stuff.
Cool.
It's kind of cool. I really want it to dry because I want to— I have enough color on here for now, so I need this to dry so I can add some Sharpie, add some details on it. Dry, dry, dry, dry. You know what, I have a hair dryer thing here. Hold on, I No, I don't. Forget that. Strike that. Reverse it. Let me know if you guys have any questions, comments, or thoughts. Tomorrow's Halloween. Sure, a lot of people in school will be all dressed up. Should be a fun day. I'm just, I'm just gonna wear just a t-shirt with a Batman logo on it. That's as far as I go with costumes tomorrow. It sounds like it's raining or pouring out. De-stress, throwing down color with no high expectations. Exactly. Hair dryer. I think it's pouring out, guys. Holy cow. Oh yeah, sounds like we've got some wicked wind and it's pouring out there. Oops, my music stopped. I love falling asleep to the sound of thunderstorms and rain. Yes, yes I do. All right, let me put this on. Boom, click, click. Perfect. All right, awesome. Batman, that's me, Batman. You know what I want to do? Let's throw some frames on this. Sometimes it's cool when you do like these Extremely loosey-goosey sketches, abstract-ish. It's fun to throw frames around things, just pull out areas. This is— I mean, this is kind of cool. Just frame that section out, you know, if you frame that area out there. I am getting I'm definitely making a mess. I got paint there. Yeah, this is, this is just a fun little piece, you know, just messing around with an old sketch and throwing stuff on it instead of throwing it away. I figured let's mess around. It's a great way to practice and maybe try different colors out, different line types, different techniques. Instead of throwing it away, just use your scrap. Just be— just use it as, um your creative sandbox. Build those sandcastles and knock them down, because you know what, that is actually part of the fun of building sandcastles, is knocking them down. Building something new and different, knock it down. Build something new, knock it down. See where I'm going? If you do, let me know, because I have no idea. No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. This is looking cool. I definitely will want to pull some shapes out with a Sharpie. I think it'll take it up a level, but still too wet to do that. Oh, hold on, maybe I can use a fountain pen. Let's try this fountain pen. Hey Linda, great to see you. Hope all's well. Hey guys, thanks for joining. If you're just tuning in, um, we have a— we have an interesting thing going on. I I just found an old sketch, had some lines on it. I just wanted to, instead of throwing it away, just be playful tonight, throw some color down, throw some lines down on here. Uh, no expected results, just playing, guys. Sometimes you just— when you don't set yourself up for an expected result, you can be playful and maybe discover some cool things. I've just— I have discovered color palettes I like by having creative playtime. I've discovered line techniques I like to sketch as well. I don't know, something my brain said, let's just throw this red marker down here. See what happens. So I'm just— I'm listening to it. I'm not fighting it. I'm just going to go for it. Is anybody out there listening dressing up for Halloween, if you celebrate it? I know a lot of people don't. Not a lot, but I know people that don't celebrate Halloween. I I have to be honest with you, I could take it or leave it. My favorite holiday is really Thanksgiving. Let me zoom out. This is really cray cray. I'm sure we'll layer something on top of the red as well. I have to admit, I think even when I was a little kid, I wasn't really crazy about Halloween. So much pressure, too much pressure to— and I was a very shy kid, believe it or not, and Just the idea of going to knock on people's doors and ring their doorbells was really hard for me to do that. The pressure of your friends making fun of you for getting the rotten candy. Wow, I'm But it had its fun too. All right, cool. Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna, you know, I'm breaking out some purple. Why? Why not? Thanksgiving for me is just— I love— we should be thankful every day, and I think we need a day to remind us to step out of our own heads. And be thankful. And I think Thanksgiving is that, that kind of day to do that, right? Sometimes we're just so busy with life, we forget to stop and be grateful for the people in our lives, the things in our lives. And that's one of the things I love about Thanksgiving, besides the food. I used to make— I used to make a mean apple pie. I haven't made one in a while. And I'm okay. I have a small family, so I'm okay with a quiet Thanksgiving. You know, for me, it's more of a day of reflection. Let me know what you guys think. Do you guys like Thanksgiving? Not like Thanksgiving? I'm gonna look in the comments if you guys have any question— any questions or thoughts, see what you're writing. So hang tight if you're writing stuff in the comments, I'll definitely check it out. I've hardly used these Creative Markers on cold press watercolor paper, so that's kind of something new for me tonight. Cool, I like the purple and red on there. All right, let's see what you guys are— what you guys are saying in the comments. I need a drink of water. So thanks for sticking with me. I know this is kind of— people are tuning in, they're like, what the heck is he doing? And tuning right out. And that's cool, I don't mind that. I guess the point of tonight is don't feel like you always need to create something that looks like something. Just throw colors, lines, shapes, just throw stuff down and be playful. I know I'm a broken record, but I think it's a really important lesson to drive home. And we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to end up with something, um, that we feel needs to be perfect, right? And that's okay, you can do that sometimes, but don't do it all the time. Allow moments like I'm doing tonight to just— anything goes, anything goes. I, I just, I want to cut some of this out, and you know what, we're going to do that. The word collage just popped into my brain. I'm going to cut some of these shapes out. All right, let's see what you guys are saying in the comments. I like Thanksgiving too, a day to be thankful for family and friends. 100%. Um, every day I do these live streams, guys, I— it's like Thanksgiving because I am really thankful for you, your time, your, your comments, your friendship. Dearest says Halloween, take it or leave it. Yeah, I think Christmas is awesome. D-Ray, yeah, you know, Christmas is— Christmas has a— it has a feeling to it. I— you guys probably know what I'm saying. It just a feeling that I get at Christmas. I can't describe it, and it's not about Yeah, it's cool to get gifts and stuff, but it's, it's a big overarching feeling. Um, and we all know, no, you know, however you celebrate Christmas or whatever it means to you, there's definitely a feeling there. Chip says, I can do scones and biscuits. Chip, you're coming to my house for Thanksgiving. I'll see you there. You ready? Or you know what, I'll fly down to you. Um, I would love that. Chip is, uh, every— Chip, you make my mouth water when I see your posts. Um, decorating tree. You love my wooden ornaments on my small tree. Oh, D-Ray, that's so cool. Tradition, right? Christmas is a big time about tradition as well. Sweet potato casserole, nuts on top. You know what, I'm sure it's delicious, but I have to be honest, I, I am not a sweet potato dude, but I'm willing to try it and I'm sure it's delicious. Oh, it's almost 9:50. Holy moly. All right, hey, if you're watching, you guys are awesome. If you're on the YouTube side of things, I would love for you to subscribe if you haven't. Give me a thumbs up over there. If I can get to 1,000 people before midnight tomorrow night, I'll do a sketch giveaway. That's my goal, big goal. Uh, put in the comments, are you guys up for seeing me do some cutting of this? Or not really. If you're not, that's cool. I won't be offended. I just feel like cutting this out. I don't know why. You know what, you know what, I'm gonna do it. I don't care what you guys say, I'm gonna do it. I'm just being— I'm being snarky. I don't care what you say, I'm going to do it anyway. Right, right, let's cut it out. Yeah, I know, I literally just spent so much time coloring this. I'm going to be cutting stuff out of it.
Let's see what happens.
Um, believe it or not, I could do this faster with an X-Acto knife, but We'll stick with scissors. Yeah, this, this would be really good for an X-Acto knife. I don't know what's gonna happen. I don't even know why I'm cutting it, but maybe it's telling me I need to watch Edward Scissorhands tomorrow night. And what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna cut shapes out. I'm gonna use the background of my thing and we'll just move pieces around. Because as I was working on this, I was kind of envisioning a jigsaw puzzle. That's not what I'm going to create now, but I don't know why all these shapes started me— started me thinking about jigsaw puzzles. Um, any jigsaw puzzle fans out there? I haven't done one in a while, but I always like— I always love doing jigsaw puzzles. I'm just gonna cut here. We'll do that. So I'm just throwing these pieces down. What else do I want to cut out? Let's do— I'm thinking too much, guys. All right, I don't want to think so much. I'm just going to cut. Going too slow. Some of this is still wet as I'm cutting through it. I'm gonna grab some of this green here. Let's do that. I want to pull out some of these shapes here, so let's just do like a V-cut. One, two, little snippy snippy. Do some snippy snippy here. Snippy snippy one. We'll do snippy two. Let's do some snippy here. Snip. Uh, let's see what we got. Let's just throw that on there. All right, so we got some shapes happening there. Can zoom in, I think. Ooh, I am making a mess. Holy moly, wowsers, I'm making a big mess over here. Let me zoom out. I got paint. You could see I got like paint over here. It's all good. You know, I need to cut this into more separate pieces. Now I got paint over my hands. This is what I'm talking about. This is fun. Let's cut this shape out here. Let's cut, uh, I want to— what do I want to cut out here? Let's cut this. Let's make this separate here. Pull that piece out. Let's just kind of do that. Alright, let's make a little collage. Let's put pieces out here, see what happens. I wish I had some tape. I can just tape this down. So you can see I'm just kind of putting pieces down, moving around a little bit. I am a bit of a mad painter tonight. Like I said, I had no idea what we were doing. We're just having fun. Let me zoom out. You can kind of see Yeah, I gotta leave. I'm a mess. You know what, I could just— this is my Halloween costume. I can be the Mad Painter tomorrow. I wouldn't even shower. I'll just go in all painted up. Still like the Mad Hatter, it can be the Mad Painter. Cool. All right, we got a little collage thing. I don't know, I don't know if it's cool or not. It was fun to cut it up and throw stuff down. By the way, I love these. These scissors are amazing. They're so cool. All right. Enough cutting for tonight. All right guys, let me know if there's any final questions, thoughts, comments. I know things were a little different tonight, and that's cool. That's part of my show, The Inspired Life. It's not always about sketching, um, buildings. It can be about anything creative. It's really about exploring your creativity and adopting a playful mindset. I'm really, I really want to stress that. I'm going to be emphasizing that a lot and a lot. Um, it's a lot— this might be less about actual sketching technique but more about creative thinking mindsets, and that's a direction I want to pursue moving forward. Hey, Elaine, great to see you! Hope all's well. It's always great to see you, Elaine. Hope you're doing awesome. Um, so here's our little collage we just kind of cut up. Oh my gosh, now I got more paint on me. This is not— this is the non-ending paint mess. This is crazy. All right, I think I'm gonna leave this and not move it anymore. Um, let me zoom in, you guys see a little bit closer. I think I got paint on my— yeah, I think I paint on my mouse now. Can I do— oh, that's cool! I forgot I could do that with this interface. That's fun. I can drag it. Hey, Eileen, great to see you too. So beautiful. Oh, thank you, Eileen. We're just, uh, I'm just doing some abstract kind of wonky colors and cutting stuff up. Nothing particular, no special buildings or anything, just being playful. Sometimes I forget how to be like little kids and just be playful. You're awesome. All right guys, let me know if you have any final questions or comments. I gotta wrap up because I have school tomorrow. Let me go, let me go to Insta, let me go to YouTube and see for a sec. To be— where are we at with subscribers? 977. All right, so I need to get to 1,000 subscribers before midnight tomorrow night. If I do, I'll give us— do a sketch giveaway. Right now I'm at 977, which is awesome because I was down at 9— I want to say I was down at 947 a few days ago. So everybody's stepping up and helping and sharing. So thank you guys, I appreciate it. This is so fun. Nothing happens with YouTube if I get 1,000. I don't get any awards or anything. I don't get any money or anything. It's just, just a fun personal goal I set. So awesome. All right, let's see. All right, we'll look at the comments. We're gonna wrap up. D-Ray loves puzzles. Oh yeah, I'm so glad. Jigsaw puzzles are really cool, right? Um, works your brain muscles. It's, um, it could be therapeutic. It could also be frustrating. It could be frustrating especially when you get down to the very last piece and the last piece is missing. Um, but it's all good. It's part of life. It's a life lesson. Sometimes we think we're gonna get to the end and complete something, but we're just missing that final piece. And sometimes we're still searching for that final piece each and every day. But it's the search, the challenge, that's the fun part. Because once you complete it, it's done, right? Think about that. Think about that. Um, let me say, I like the blue paint splatter, it works. Oh, thank you. You like the blue paint splatter right here? Yeah, that was, that was all planned. I will take full credit for that. You are funny. You're silly. Um, that was so unplanned. That is because I have a big dollop of wet paint here that— now I just got green on me. Yeah, we'll just— we'll call it Halloween. It's all my Halloween costume. Um, I didn't— I did not get any on my computer. All right guys, you're awesome. I appreciate you all so much. Um, I hope you had some good takeaways tonight. You know, creativity, artwork, sketching, painting, whatever you do for your creative outlet, um, it's not always the end result. It's the process. It's the journey. It's the experience. It's what happens between A to Z. That's the part where we learn, the part where we grow, the part where we're challenged, the part where we problem solve, the part where we explore, experiment. And create. So remember that. All right, until we meet again, sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire endlessly. All right, YouTube, 1,000 subscribers, here we come! Share it out, share it, guys. I would love for that so much. I appreciate y'all, and have a happy Halloween. I will be streaming tomorrow night during Halloween. I'll be live streaming, and, um, yeah. We'll see how it goes, probably after 9 PM.
