Todays sketching gear

Jason Nicholas walks through his outdoor sketching setup: an Alpaka sling bag, Ugly Books sketchbook, Lockbee folio, portable stool, and water-bottle holder. He keeps gear minimal and portable for sketching architecture and nature on the move, and shows how colored paper and the folio's pocket system work for quick sketches.

Where I love sketching architecture, love the outdoors and walking and hiking. I wanted to show you, here is today's sketching gear. So I'm out walking around and it may look different than my usual sketching, which is architecture and cities and buildings, right? So I'm here in nature and here's what I brought to sketch today. So I have a couple of really cool things, a few things here. I brought one of these ugly books, a white gel pen, of course my Lockabee folio, Burnside as well. And I have this cool little— and this cool portable stool, which is great for taking around with me. So that's kind of my gear, um, and I have an Alpaka backpack on as well. So I figured I'd just walk around for a little bit and see what, uh, intrigues me, what I might sketch out here. I do love those trees, those white birch trees are pretty beautiful. Or maybe I'll sketch looking that direction, I'm not sure, but it's always a great thing to be prepared and grab-and-go creativity, which is what I'm always promoting, grabbing and going. So it was really easy for me to take this stuff with me today out and about. And, um, yeah. Hey Edie, great to see you. Hope all is well. Great to see you. So I'm going to actually show you guys the bag I'm taking with me as well. Didn't see the whole kind of fit today. Sorry, it was over my shoulder. Um, So here's kind of— this is the gear I have. Boom. So this is all I need for me and walking and sketching. Keep it simple, keep it light. I love this Alpaka bag. They are not a sponsor. I just love their products. Got a cool water bottle holder, and I fit everything in there except for the portable stool. There you go. So we'll see what I'm going to sketch today, and I'm going to try to livestream tonight, so maybe around 9 PM. School is out finally. Yesterday was the last day, so I am now on, uh, summertime. So summertime projects coming up, and I'm looking forward to a different schedule. And focusing a little more on my sketching and walking and maybe NYC visits this summer and working on really fun architecture projects. Really cool. If you're in the chat, say hello. Edie's in the chat. Edie, I am sure it's beautiful in NYC today, right? I'm sure it's amazing there. I'm gonna try to get there this week, maybe. I have a deadline I need to hit, so if I get my deadline done early, I'll venture into NYC one day. That'd be amazing. Pretty cool. Yeah guys, so, um, if you're just popping on, Jason Nicholas with The Inspired Life. I just wanted to show my gear I have while I'm out sketching today. My fun, cool alpaca sling bag, an ugly book, and my Lockbie portfolio. And a cool white gel pen and portable stool here. If you guys want to know the gear I use, go to my website, the Inkspired Life, I-N-K, inkspiredlife.com/tools, and you'll see like a list of everything I like to sketch with these days. Um, yeah, I am a Lockbee and UglyBooks affiliate, so if you use my link on my website, you'll get a 10% discount. So definitely check that out if you're interested in some really cool travel sketching gear. Awesome, right? I wish I could sketch and livestream, but I don't have my tripod, so I forgot one thing, but that's okay. Let's see, uh, I'll just show you quick. This is not from today, but this is a sketch I did in here. I think the sun's kind of— well, we gotta go this way. Um, so this was a cool sketch I did the other day in the ugly book. I love the Yellow Pages. And this is color pencil, white gel pen, and I think that's it. So it's just a fun kind of sketch. Sometimes we think we need to sketch on white paper, which is awesome, I do it every day, but why not mix it up and use different color paper? You know, here's just some stuff in my Lochbie folio since we're talking nature. Here's— Yeah. Cool iris-inspired sketch I did in my folio here. One of the things I do love about this Lockbie folio is look at the pockets. I can keep my pens in here. Love it. Plenty of paper. I have a dot journal and a plain paper journal. I have another pen back here. Ugly books back here. Usually have my Statue of Liberty torches sketches in here I give out. Just a real convenient grab-and-go creative— creative? Wow. Creative. Creativity tool. Yeah, these are unrehearsed. Yeah, if you want to stick with me, I'll, I'll just take a quick walk around. The camera might be shaky because I am just holding it in my hand. But let me just put this in here. It's a gorgeous day, and I saw— do you guys want to see a turtle? Stick with me for a minute, I'll show you. I just saw a turtle on my way up. So I'm going to pack this stuff in the bag. Oh, you know what? I'm gonna leave it here. There's no one in the park. All right, let's go see the turtle. There's my stuff. All right, let's— I'll show you guys this turtle. Um, pro tip: when you're hiking and walking around, always be sure to look down as well as up, because I almost stepped on this poor turtle. Oh no! Um, yeah, he was around the corner here. Hopefully he's still around. Let's see. Oh no, wait, he's gone. Dang it. Señor Turtle has left us. I thought turtles were supposed to be slow. Oh man, I don't know where he went. I'm, uh, I'm on a turtle quest now. Dang, the turtle is literally like right down in this area here. Hmm. What the shell? He's gone. Turtle's gone. Oh well. You know what? That's nature. Nature has its own course, its own path, its own directions to go in, just like we do, right? After all, isn't that just part of simply Being human. All right, I'll get back to my stuff and we'll wrap here. If you guys like what you're seeing, please give me a thumbs up, subscribe to this channel. More walking livestreams from here, other parks, New York City, and livestream sketching from my studio. I'm gonna try to sketch tonight, 9 PM Eastern time, if I'm not too sleepy. And that's my gear. Good night. And we'll leave with a shot. Thank you so much for watching. Awesome. And please, we don't need, um, anything other unrelated to what I'm talking about posted in the comments. Thank you so much. Have an amazing day. Thank you.
