Jason Nicholas shows how to build a mixed-media sketch of the Brooklyn Bridge from messy watercolor and ink splotches into a finished piece. He layers pigment, adds lines and marker details across multiple passes, stressing that early stages look ugly but persistence pays off.
The first thing I did here was I kind of just threw down these splotches of watercolor and ink, and then I started adding some lines, and I wasn't really crazy about it. Then I came back, added a little more to it, and then it just kind of morphed and transformed. So always press pass, or, or, uh, push past that ugly duckling phase, and you'll be surprised what happens. So I think this turned out to be really, really cool sketch of the Brooklyn Bridge. So don't give up too easily, just keep moving forward. All right, we threw down some marker. Before I wrap up— I'm going to wrap up at 10 o'clock— um, let's throw down some watercolor and ink on top of this and see how that works.
