Tuesday Sketching

Jason Nicholas, a New Jersey architect and CAD teacher, demonstrates his Tuesday Sketching process: loose watercolor and acrylic washes in cadmium yellow, fluorescent red, and bright aqua that become backdrops for architectural sketches. He chats with viewers about upcoming landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge and Kintai Bridge, shares techniques like lifting paint with paper towels and air sketching, and invites the community to suggest subjects.

Hey, happy Monday, March 16th. Hope you're doing well. It's 8:41 PM here in New Jersey, the Garden State, and it was warm out today, so hopefully soon it will look like the Garden State. It's been a long, long winter. A lot of rain today, which is— which we need, so that's a good thing. All right, uh, this is gonna be a really brief— like, I have to stick to a really brief time tonight because I have to get to bed, but I want to pop on and do something creative tonight. If you don't know who I am, my name is Jason, and I love sketching, especially architecture. I'm an architect. I'm a high school architecture and CAD teacher, creative by nature, and This is what I love doing. This is, um, sketching is my thing, and I'm trying something different lately. So what you're seeing is kind of something new for me. So it's been fun just throwing down these really cool abstract colors on these pages, letting them dry, and then coming back and doing sketches on top of them. So last night on the live stream, we did Lincoln Center. Um, came out kind of cool. And the Oculus building as well. So be sure to check the live stream replays on YouTube and you can see, uh, see how these were created in action. And I don't know if that's a word— in action. Yeah. All right, so I think, I think tonight I'm going to just create some more pages as background, so I'm gonna throw down some colors, just be really loose and cray-cray about it and just be really fun and playful. I don't think I'll be on live tomorrow night. Usually I'm trying to go live on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday nights. Um, I've been doing a lot more in between then, but tomorrow I think I'll be out. Uh, so we'll hit— we'll hit it tonight, we'll do something. Um, but yeah, this has turned out really fun. It's been a great experiment and I love the way these are kind of coming out. Oculus building, the copper building, um, Lincoln Center. I love— I check out Lincoln Center, just look at— I love the colors, they're fun. I love the little people in there to give a sense of scale, so it looks really, really cool. I haven't sketched on this one yet. I don't know what I'll sketch tonight. We're, we're just going to create some more pages tonight, guys, so let's just throw down some colors. We'll work on this side here, and that's all I want to do. So feel free to say hello in the chat. I see Jen is watching. Jen, it's awesome to see you. Uh, thank you for popping on. I know you're busy and you do a lot of stuff, so I appreciate you popping in and popping in and out whenever you can. You're, um, awesome, and your support is really— it does not go unrecognized. So I'm going to talk and throw down some colors. So Jen, wherever you— when you finish moving, if you have a little wall space, let me know. And it could be small, maybe even the size of like a postcard. If you have any space like that, I'd love, love to, uh, send a sketch your way to put into your new place. So just something to think about. So I have to be honest, there's no rhyme or reason to how I'm throwing these colors down. I'm really just kind of winging it. I have no expectations other than just to have fun. And I kind of know the colors I want to use. They're out here. It's the colors I've been using. So that was, um, cadmium yellow. This is fluorescent red, which I love so much. Maybe we'll do like a twofer, who knows. Meaning I'll just maybe just kind of clean off the brush on this side here. Why not, right? Let's do it.
Cool, right?
Hey, thank you, Jen, that's awesome. Yeah, if you can let me know, that would be so fun. That'd be so cool. I'd love to, um, send a sketch your way. Send sketch your way. I have a— I have a sketch put aside for Gigi as well. I just wanted just to show you guys how much I do appreciate your, um, just being here and Just being positive, just being positive. And if you hear my pup in the background, she might be running around just playing a little bit.
I can't get her out.
I've been trying to get her outside and, uh, she doesn't like the wind, so she's been kind of being a little challenging to get out outside today. I want to just lift some colors off of here. You'd be honored to have a masterpiece. Well, you are so kind. That's a— I'll take it, but that's a strong word, masterpiece. How about an original? We'll have an original. But I appreciate that. And if you have any, I don't know, favorite landmark buildings where you are, I'm always open for suggestions. You could always send me some pictures of some buildings you like, and— or it could be a bridge or something. I'm always open-minded about trying to sketch different things. Oh, I love this color! Oh man, this color is awesome. Wowzers. So I know these always look kind of cray-cray, and that's the point because they're supposed to. The fun is coming back and adding a sketch later onto these, right? I mean, here you can see how this one kind of happened. And sometimes I'll actually take a paper towel and I'll just use it for texture and also to lift off some color. So we'll just kind of dab and just lift some off. Right, this is just about being fun and playful. There we go, that looks cool. I need some aqua. Let's see, we want to do this, or let's throw down some bright aqua green. Let's do that. Let me change up the tunes a little bit. So my new— my song this week, guys, is called Rise Above It All. Here, I'll show you. That, that is my song this week. I'm loving it. It's motivating me. Let's keep me going. Oh, I, I'll show you a close-up. I love what's happening down here. I love what's happening down in the bottom left corner. Looks really, really fun, really cool. Let's see, let me clean this off. We'll start scraping off some colors, I think. Pardon my arm in the way. Going to drink some water. Look at this kind of gray kind of color happening in the dirty water. See that? I'm actually going to use that and just kind of brush it on here. Why not, right? So I just have water on the brush and I'm literally peeling off, wiping away some of that paint on there. So I want the colors underneath to show. So you can kind of see what happened there. Do I ever dream that I'm sketching? That's a— I love that question. Um, I don't think I— I don't think I dream that I'm sketching. I don't think I dream that I'm sketching, believe it or not. I wake up sometimes with ideas of things to sketch, but you know what I do? Here's what I do. So if you ever see me out in public, I'll show you what I do and you'll know what you'll be clued in here. You'll literally see me. Um, yeah, let me put it— please let me change cameras here.
All right.
Hey guys, how are you? Good to see you. So here's a demo. If you ever see me out in public, and I'm looking at something, I might— you might see me going like this, almost like I'm conducting. But sometimes I'm sketching or drawing things that I see, and I'm drawing them kind of almost like air guitar. I'm air sketching, and it puts them in my brain. It's really weird, right? So sometimes, sometimes that'll happen. So it's, uh, we'll call it air sketching, like air guitar. So, um, I love that question. So no, I don't really sketch while I dream, but I do air sketching. Just thought I'd throw that fun fact your way. Thanks for asking the question. Back to the board. Hey, Gigi's in the house! Gigi, great to see you. I hope you're doing well. Thank you for popping onto the streams. I know you and everybody out there, you guys are all busy, and Jen and Thank you for popping on, even if it's for a few minutes here and there. It means the world to me, guys, so I really appreciate it. Hey, JLM, same goes to you. Great to see you. So tonight, guys, I'm just prepping some backgrounds so next time I do some live stream, we'll be ready to go and kind of do what we did the other night, right? Here's Lincoln Center. Boom. This actually might be one of my favorites. I really love the way it came out. The colors are awesome. Um, so I'm just prepping some backgrounds tonight, just throwing color down and talking to you guys for a few. But I have to get to bed early because I have— I have an early, early— I gotta get up at 4 AM, an early start tomorrow. But I couldn't go a day without Just coming online, getting some stuff done. It's looking cool. I'm just going through some songs, put some Coldplay on. I need some water. You guys are awesome. All right, let's throw down some, uh, you know, I'm gonna— let me— I'm gonna break a color out I don't think I've used yet. I'm gonna go into my magic drawer behind me. What do we have? Maybe I got a lot of acrylic paint here. Maybe this— let's try this one.
I think it's this one.
Let's see, I just kind of pulled out What is this? Cadmium red. Let's throw some green on here. We're going cray cray on this one, guys. Cray cray. Welcome to the world. Welcome to the wacky world of color. The wacky world of color where you can make it your own. Bring your own vibes to the moment. Go crazy, throw down some color, and just have fun. Oh mama, I like this green next to the pink. I hope everybody is off to a fabulous start this week. I wish you all nothing but a peaceful and positive week. Um, for our St. Paddy's Day, so we'll throw down some green now in honor of St. Paddy's Day. So if you're Irish and you're celebrating, or even if you're not Irish and you're celebrating, enjoy your St. Patrick's Day. And we have our shamrock shake color going on here just to This is my contribution to St. Patrick's Day. I'm really dragging the brush lightly across here. I want to skip it on the colors underneath, and I'll show you a close-up. Here, let me do a little bit. There we go. So this is what this is looking like. Check out here where that green is. I love the texture. I love it showing through. It kind of skips over the other one. This right here is magical. I love this where that blue is, the aqua. That is killer. I love this side here. This is going to be a fun one to do a, a back— not a back, a sketch— a sketch on top of it. Front sketch, top sketch. Welcome to the Inkspired Life, where we wing it, we invent our own terms. This is unscripted, unrehearsed. I am not a professional artist by any means. I'm just a self-taught, fun, creative— I don't know what you want to call it. Artists— we're all artists in our own way. And art— artist doesn't have to mean painting or drawing or sketching. Artists can be dancing, musician, anything. You can bring artistry to anything you do. So I'm just scraping back some of that green down there.
Yeah, it's looking cool.
I want to do some scratching. We need some scratchy stuff on here. I am literally just going to take this end of this brush, we're going to scratch through here, pull some paint off. Um, again, we're just creating these fun backgrounds so we can come, come on here another day and just do some archi sketch— archi sketcher. I like that term, archi sketcher. Is that out there? Can someone Google that for me? Archi sketcher. Um, right, that's what's fun. So this is cool. All right, I'm going to check in the comments. If you have any questions or comments, please always put them in. I will definitely check. But look how— look what I just did. I should have been on camera. I'm literally just wiggling and scraping the paint off of here so you can see underneath a little bit. I love the song Paradise by Coldplay. Paradise, it's a great, great song. Great reminder. Hey, there we go. Whoa, look how cool that is! See at the bottom of the screen? That's like magic sauce there. Magic sauce. All right, let me look in the comments, say hello, answer some questions. I— Rainy here. I see Six and Rainy here. I, I may have missed some chats. So it's been raining here all day in New Jersey. Um, weather's been kind of— temp's been kind of warm, but it's been rainy, rainy, rainy, which is good. We need it for the flowers, and our reservoirs need to get filled here. Hey, Chip's in the house! Great to see you. Sorry you've been absent, Chip. It's all good. It's so great to see you, man. I appreciate you joining. You're awesome, and we'll have to definitely catch up soon. Awesome. Vibrant colors. Yes, right? I'm digging the colors here. I think that might be enough background on here. Um, I don't want to mucky— muck it up too much right now, so I'm gonna let it dry. I don't know if I'll have time to do a sketch on top of them tonight. Um, you received the Winsor Newton Oswald Gray watercolor, sort of like graphite. No blue or yellow undertone, and it's smooth from transparent to rich neutral. Ooh, JLM, I love that. Thank you for sharing that. Newton Oswald Gray, that's so cool. Winsor Newton, love it. Oh, did it hit 61 today in New York City? That's awesome.
Wow.
Add it to your watercolor travel palette for plein air inspired Archesketcher wash hands. I know you love the BB, but have you sketched other bridges? Oh yeah, Gigi, great question. I love the Brooklyn Bridge. Um, yes, I have. I've sketched, I've sketched a lot of bridges. Um, I have a friend, she lives in Washington State. And she was— last year or the year before, she sent me a lot of pictures of bridges there. So I did sketches from, uh, of bridges in Washington State. I did a quick— where's my Golden Gate? Is it up there? I don't see it. I did a Golden Gate sketch. Um, New York City, I've sketched some of the bridges in Central Park, which I love, love, love. I need to do a Central Park sketching tour, just this spring, summer, I am hitting Central Park with a sketchbook, and that's gonna be so fun. Um, bridges— any other NYC bridges? Manhattan Bridge. I've sketched the Manhattan Bridge. Do you know the iconic Dumbo view of the Manhattan Bridge? Um, I've sketched that view. That might be behind me, actually. Yeah, so behind me I have— here, actually, let me change camera views. I'll show you guys. Camera view changing. Close-up, sorry. All right, so behind me I have the Manhattan Bridge there. It's also underneath, so we got the Manhattan Bridge kind of stacked up over there. What else? That's all they have over there on that wall. So yeah, I definitely— I love sketching bridges. Um, Paris. I've sketched the— I think you guys have all seen this here. I think you guys have all seen this. I'm switching camera views again, it's just easier. I think you guys have all seen this bad boy, right? So this is, um, Pont Neuf in Paris. It's a pretty big sketch. Love it. So yeah, great question. If you have any bridges you like and you want me to sketch, send pictures, send them my way. I'd love— I'm always looking for inspo pictures, so if you have anything, please let me know. I'm open to sketching different things. Great questions. London Bridge? No, I have not sketched London Bridge.
Oh.
Interesting. So there's London Bridge. Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't there London Bridge? And is there also Tower— is there Tower Bridge? I think you— I, and I think Tower Bridge is the iconic one, um, that we all think of. Yeah, if you guys want to check that out or Google it up That'd be cool, interesting to see. I kind of lied, I do want to throw down some red on top of this. 907. All right, yeah, let's throw some more red on here. So thank you guys on this journey of me experimenting and just, just trying a whole, um, different style. I really want to grow at my craft, so the only way to grow is by what? It's by trying, right? Trying different things. Some things you'll like, some things you won't like, and it's fair. It's all good. Oh yeah, check out that punch of red. I'm, I'm not even going to touch it. I'm leaving it just like that. That is awesome. I love that punch of red there. Isn't it amazing? What do you think? I really feel like this needs, um, we need a blue, like a, like a like a nice dark blue. Do I have one? I do. I feel like I need some dark blue on this. Let's throw down some— this is cobalt blue. Cobalt blue. Jen says I Googled 7 London bridges. That's so funny. You haven't sent it. Oh, oh, did I— was I, was I supposed to send something? Let me know, let me know. I still— I'm not sure. Yeah. Let me know what I need to send. Ah, look at this blue. I know it's all the way on the bottom under the locky thing. Here, help me to bring it up. Yeah, look at that. We need— we need some blue on here. I think it's kind of old though. It's a little, little chunky. It's like a chunky blue. Chunky Blue. Sounds like the name of a rock band, Chunky Blue, or maybe, maybe a country band. Oh man, guys, I'm loving this. This is so awesome. Check this out. I look at this orange showing through under the blue. This is so fun, just putting layers on top of layers and letting things pop through. This is going to be interesting to sketch on top of. It's such a busy background, but it's all right. It's what we do, right? I meant you haven't sent the Paris Bridge to your friend. Oh no, you know, I was gonna send it and, um He kind of— he was going to give it to his friend that has a, uh, a cafe, Paris cafe, and he kind of liked it black and white better after, which is fine because that's more the aesthetic and the vibe of the cafe. So I aged it and, um, yeah, so I kept it. But yeah, you have a good memory. Ding ding ding ding! 10 points for Gigi and her amazing memory. Yeah, you have a good memory. That's funny. All right, I think, guys, I think these backgrounds are good enough. If you want to hang tight with me, I'll do, I'll do a quick sketch. I'll do just a kind of regular old regular sketch. These can dry overnight and into the week, so I don't— I am taking a little sketchbook with me in case I have to stay overnight tomorrow night, but we'll see. We'll play by ear. I don't think I'll be sketching on live tomorrow night. All right, cool. Someone tell me to stop. Stop, stop it, man. All right, I'm done. All right, we'll let these dry. So you will see these backgrounds again at another point in time, and we will work some magic on them just like we did with these. Awesome. All right, let's pick— let's take out, uh, let's see, I got this right here. Oh hey, Gigi, you said bridges. Hold on a sec, I actually have two right back here. So here's a couple of bridges. This is the, uh, Pont Alexandre Alexandre III, uh, on the Seine River, Paris. So here's a quick bridge sketch. And then this is, um, oh my gosh, Central Park, Gapstow. Gapstow Bridge, Central Park. It's near, um, near the plaza on that end of Central Park. So that's Gapstow Bridge. All right, all right guys, so we're gonna do a quick sketch in here to wrap up tonight. It will definitely be 9:30. If anybody wants to put in the comments, hey, it's 9:27, knucklehead, time to wrap up, let me know. I get carried away. Yeah, let's get— you know what, I'm gonna sketch a lighthouse. Let's sketch a lighthouse. I haven't sketched one in a while. And I love lighthouses. These were fun too, these kind of abstract cityscapes. Scapes, as Jen said. Scapes. All right, let's do it, guys. Let's sketch something on here. Let's do a lighthouse. Let me grab a Sharpie. Grab a Sharpie, not a Sharpay. If I grab the Sharpay, we'd hear some barking because that's a dog. So let me grab a Sharpie. I do this and then we'll definitely use some creative marker on here. I don't think that one works. That one doesn't work, guys. You know what, I have a trash can here, so no more excuses. Old, old Sharpies are going in the trash. This one works. Let's do a lighthouse.
Okay, here we go. All right, cool.
Love it. Look up the Kin— Kinte Bridge in Japan. Oh, you will definitely do that. How about Central Park tunnels? There are some really cool Central Park tunnels. Yeah, these are really great ideas. Oh, that's a great bridge at JLM 517 Rocks. The Kintai— Kintai— Kintai— I will look it up right now. That's the beauty of the internet. Kintai Bridge. Wow, that's cool. Wowzers, it looks like a serpentine shape. It's like a serpentine, like a— right, we gotta— let's just grab, I don't know, here, yellow. It's like a serpentine bridge. There's a cool perspective. Actually, let me get my Sharpie. Um, yeah, it has a I've never sketched this before. Let's do— I'm just looking at a picture of that Kintai Bridge. Kintai, am I saying that right? Kintai. I'm looking at a really small picture, so— but we'll sketch, we'll see what it does. Got that kind of shape, we have kind of that shape happening. Boom, boom, boom. This comes down kind of like this. We've got these cool kind of pylon structures here happening. Look at that going on, kind of big pylon here in the foreground, right? So we kind of have that shape. This is interesting perspective. And then back here we got kind of this happening. Boom, another pylon going on. Looks like coming up some kind of pebble, maybe some kind of pebble beach or something. Not Pebble Beach in Brooklyn. Pebble Beach. If you haven't been to Pebble Beach in Brooklyn, it's such a beautiful location. Definitely check it out. Anything in that area is beautiful. Oh my gosh, I love, love, love, love, love, love, love that area so much. I can visit— I get to hang out in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Dumbo and I could spend hours and hours and hours and hours just being in that spot, right? This obviously is a quick 3-minute version of that bridge, but it does this, right? It's like a serpentine boom boom boom happening. So what is this? I'm gonna write the name of this. Is this the right bridge? Kintayako. I hope I found the right one. I just realized it says Kintayako. Oh, sorry, Kintai-kyo. I want to say in Spanish, like, I know, I know it's in Japanese. Does anybody speak Japanese? Let me know. How do you say that? Gintaiko. Gintaiko. Gintaiko. I apologize if I'm butchering the pronunciation. The Gintaiko— it's like saying it— Gintaiko Bridge. Oh, it would be nice if I could spell bridge. There we go. Yes, we need spell check. We need a spell check on this show. Spell check. And we'll just get— there's kind of— there's stones on here. Let's just show some stones. And then I have 4 minutes until closing time. You guys know that song? It's closing. I'm not gonna sing. I don't want to scare too many people away. I need a good wrap-up song here. I can listen to it one more time. So this is my song of the week. My song of the week is this one right here, Rise Above It All. Just very— I need a motivational song this week, and this is it. This is helping me get through the week. All right, let's just do some hatching under here, just give a little depth to it.
All right, cool.
All right, here we go, the Kintaku Bridge. All right, if you have any final questions or comments, please put them in the chat. I will scope it as I'm starting to put my stuff away here. I'm trying to get in the habit of putting my stuff away at the end of the day. That way, if I ever want to just grab and go on the road, take stuff with me, it's ready to go. Kind of a new habit I'm getting into. And we'll see how the other stuff's drying. Uh, found a 9x12 toned tan Strathmore mixed media pad online, not spendy, smooth enough for ink work and paint. Your Soho book got me inspired. Oh, I'm so glad to hear that. That's awesome. I love, I love that you're trying these things, um, out. I love the feedback you're providing. It's so helpful. So keep it going. Let's keep that creative spirit going, the sharing going. That's what this is about, guys— sharing, caring. I think of another word that rhymes with sharing, caring— pairing, chairing. I don't know. All right, let me see, um how these dried. All right, so this is what we worked on. This is how they're drying. Pretty cool. Next time you see me online, we'll maybe work on one of these. Keep your suggestions coming to me. You can always email me, message me, DM me here, or Instagram, blah blah blah blah, all that fun stuff. Or even, should we get the Discord going? I don't know. Maybe we'll get that Discord going. All right, you guys are awesome. JLM says very cool. Jess says thanks for your sharing, amazing sketches. Thank you, Jen, for sharing your amazing time and humanity. I appreciate you. JLM, thank you for spending time with us, it's always great. Appreciate your creative input. GG, thank you for just being you and bringing your amazing amazing humanity to the table. Um, appreciate you so much. We voice chat one day? Yes, let's do that. I'd love to connect with you guys via choice, via voice chat online. We could even— we'll talk about that. I'm more than happy to do that. We could even, uh, set up a call or something. Be so fun. You guys are awesome. Thank you so much. Hey, Missy Giggles, great to see you. Wow, you're in the house. Good to see you as well. Thanks for bringing the sparkles my way, I appreciate that. Yeah, I'm up for Zoom too. If any of you guys are ever up for doing the Zoom, let me know. We could Zoom for a few. It'd be kind of a fun way to see each other and, and connect, uh, via face. And you don't have to worry about doing your hair because I obviously don't do mine. Just bring yourself and that's all I ask. Let me know if you guys ever want to do a Zoom. I would love to do that. Missy, so great to see you. So beautiful. Thank you. Yeah, um, yeah, Missy, these are just backdrops for— we're going to be sketching some NYC buildings on them in upcoming days. Oculus, you might recognize some of these from, um, CFOT's channel. The Oculus Building, Copper Building. He showed the Copper Building on the ferry rides. Brooklyn Bridge. In Lincoln Center. So that's what we're getting ready to do coming up this week. All right guys, I gotta head out. I have a 4 AM call. I have to be, uh, at the hospital by 5:30 AM for my procedure. So, uh, I don't usually ask this, but just some positive vibes. I'm not really worried or concerned, um, but yeah, thank you so much. I appreciate all— you're amazing. Be sure to like this on the way out, thumbs up, subscribe, all that cool stuff. Share this out. Let's definitely, uh, Zoom sometime and get to know each other more because you guys are awesome. All right, until we meet again, guys, sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire endlessly. Take care. I could go for an hour, but I'm sure you guys are glad I'm wrapping up. Raise your hand if you're glad. Thank you so much, guys. Take care. I appreciate you. All right, this is the most I've smiled all day, so thank you. This seriously just means a lot. I appreciate it. This came out kind of fun too. Sweet dreams, everyone.
