How Early Should You Bring Up A Career Path For Recruits (and what do you do about your part-timers)
30 Jan 2026 · 2 min
Rick Lau discusses when to bring up career paths with new hires. Start the conversation early, even in initial meetings, using org charts to show where roles lead. Part-timers should transition to full-time before taking on higher-responsibility positions.

Welcome to Clinic Boss Secrets.
Hey everybody. I love this episode. We're gonna be talking about part timers at your clinic and how do you bring up their career path and how do you make these parts timers stick around? Check it out.
Honestly, like I, I talk about all those things like in the first meeting I have with them. And, and the reason for that is because, you know, I, I, it gives me a little bit of a better idea to gauge, you know, how motivated they are and where they want to land. And it gives me an idea how well they might be able to fit in with the current work structure. At the end of the day, like in a clinic, you can't have, everybody wants to be a clinic director and everybody wants to be a clinical education. You only have so many people doing the same role. Right. So, you know, when you're, when you're talking about the career path or when I show them the org structure, right away, I ask them, hey, like, where do you see yourself on this? And then they'll point it out and it gives me an idea again how we can hopefully work towards that and, and also gives me an opportunity to just chat with them about expectations on how to get there right. Within our company. Right. And of course, you know, highlighting and value stacking, like what the difference is between us and other maybe companies that might say they'll get them to that place. But you know, we also use a little bit of the social proof. So there's a lot of conversations around that work structure and career path for sure. Like right out the gate.
Yeah, that's great. And then search. I'm actually curious because Susan just put a question into, or a comment into the chat, like, what do you, what do you do if you have part timers? Is there an opportunity for your part timers or is that something where you're like, you know, part time is great, but you know, we need you to be full time before we start thinking about career pathways.
Yeah, I think, I think the one thing I've noticed in my conversations with, with part timers is, you know, a lot of times what I'm Hearing is that they want to, they want to be a part time clinician because they might be worried about their caseload or whether they can build fast enough or they're not sure if they want to really commit to the company. Right. So the first thing we talk about and the career path within the clinician like section is to become a full time clinician. Right. Because we can't. It's hard for us to give a specific role to somebody that requires, you know, effort and time if they're not fully, you know, dedicated to the company. Right. And it's not, and I don't say it in a way to deter them, but I say them, hey, if you do come in like we can talk about the roles once we first talk about you being full time at the company and trying to figure out what are those barriers to becoming full time and letting go of the other part time situation they might have. And then we have to work hard and that's our first goal, to get them super busy, get them enough assessments and once they're full time, then right away we can start to have that conversation on the career path. But I still tell them what that career path looks like. But I just tell them that, hey, there's another step before we can talk about the next role that they take on.
