A short conversation (interview) where Tim Frey and another speaker discuss common mistakes small business owners make with lead magnets and webinars. They emphasize that lead magnets must be specific, solve an audience’s known problems, and be used to build awareness and trust (the 'dating' phase) rather than immediately pushing sales, which produces low-quality or refund-seeking clients.
Where do you see most small business owners going wrong?
Usually the lead magnets suck. People have a problem, the solution needs to be delivered to them in the lead magnet or webinar. Oftentimes people make webinars. They're like 10 ways to improve your life. Like something really airy fairy like that. And no one wants that. No one's going to give their details over for that. And it provides no value.
I think where most people go wrong with their lead magnets is they're just not specific enough. Like your lead magnets, your webinars. They should be solving very specific problems that your audience is aware that they have. One problem that I see a lot of is that a lot of people kind of try to skip the content phase and go straight to the office space. All they're doing is trying to sell all the time. And you're missing that awareness piece. You're missing that know like and trust piece and you're going straight to just like buy my stuff. Guys, if you're trying to skip the dating phase of dating your clients and you're trying to go for a one night stand, that's exactly what you're going to get. You're going to get clients who are wishy washy. You're going to clients to try and get out of your programs. You're going to get clients ask for refunds. You're going to get pain in the ass clients when you don't actually attract in and create great awareness content.
