Get it? Learn How to Put the M****F**** Weed in the Bag First, Then Get Money
7 Sept 2025 · 9 min
Tina White uses a line from the film Belly—put the weed in the bag first, then get money—to argue that skipping life's levels leads to imposter syndrome and broken relationships. She warns against social media comparison and offers exercises like a life-level journal to help listeners stay intentional.

Welcome back to The Trigger and the Truth, where we cut through the noise and get real about life, growth, and mental health. Today's episode is titled "Learn How to Put the Weed in the Bag First, Then Get Money." If that line sounds familiar, it's because it comes from the classic film "Belly," starring DMX and Nas, a film packed with lessons that hit harder the older you get. There's a scene where DMX's character, Tommy Buns, who is on the run in Atlanta, stressed out trying to figure things out, tells one of his guys, It was either Wise or Lockhead, I forget which one, but he was young and too eager to skip the grind and jump straight to the payoff. In the scene, they're literally chopping it up, putting weed in bags, and then Tommy told him something simple but profound: "Learn how to put the weed in the bag first, then get money." Of course, he used slightly different language, but if you know, you know. Tina White. That line always stayed with me because it's a metaphor for life. Too many of us want the reward without the grind, the success without the sacrifice, the results without the discipline. But life doesn't work that way. If you try to skip the process, you miss the lessons, and those lessons are the very foundation that prepares you to level up, whether mentally, physically, or financially. If it's not obvious by now, let me say this loud and clear: your journey is yours alone. Your assignment is yours. While you might walk alongside a partner, family, or friends, at the end of the day, your path is your responsibility. And here's the truth: time waits for no one. If you skip levels, you're not avoiding the work, You're just delaying it because life will circle back and force you to learn what you try to dodge. So in today's episode, we're breaking it all down: why embracing your process matters, why shortcuts will cost you more than they'll ever give you, and how every stage of life is shaping you for what's next. We'll also tie this into mental health because moving too fast, always chasing the next thing leaves you anxious, unfocused, and empty. And like always, I'll leave you with some practical ways to reflect, stay grounded, and actually commit to your process. So let's get into it. Part 1: Every level serves a purpose. Think about life like a video game. You can't just jump to the final level without first mastering the ones that come before it. Every stage comes with its own challenges, skills and lessons that prepare you for what's next. Life works the same way. Every level, whether it's a period of personal growth, a rocky relationship, or a financial setback, is designed to teach you something you'll need for the future. As an entrepreneur, I've seen this play out time and time again. Money and relationships will test you in ways you never imagined. And here's the truth: desperation will expose you. Too many people hit a financial bind, and instead of steadying themselves, instead of putting in the work to grow into the opportunity, they act out of panic. They start moving recklessly, trying to grab at anything that looks like a shortcut. Maybe you've seen it, or maybe you've lived it. You put someone onto an opportunity, Give them access to something solid, something you vouch for, and instead of being grateful and learning, they start plotting. They snake their way in, move predatorily, and try to take over. That's not ambition. That's desperation disguised as hustle. And when people move like that, they reveal exactly who they are, not who they pretend to be. The problem is, when you skip levels like that, you don't just show your hand, you block your own blessings. You rush what wasn't meant to be rushed, and instead of building a solid foundation, you wind up burning bridges and cutting off future opportunities. Patience and integrity keep doors open. Desperation slams them shut. But here's where we get tripped up. We want to rush through the hard parts. We want to skip past discomfort, avoid setbacks, and get to the good stuff as quickly as possible. The problem with that approach is simple: if you skip the lesson, you miss the growth, and without that growth, you're not truly prepared for the next level. Each level of your life builds on the last. Skipping levels might seem like a shortcut, but in reality, it's a detour that will eventually require you to go back and learn what you missed.
To tell the truth, let's unpack a heavy bag that's been bursting at the seams. We owe it to ourselves to hold ourselves accountable, owning our part in the breakdown of a relationship. One of us might be a narcissist, or maybe both of us. Are you willing to tell the truth about your role? Did you burn sage only to pass out from the fumes? Are you perhaps the root cause of the problem? I'll go first. If I'm being honest, I can be problematic when my buttons are pushed or when I feel my boundaries have been crossed. God is still working on me, and that's why we're here. I'm taking this journey with you because I need healing just as much as anyone else. I've had to confront my own tendencies. I've realized that in conflict, I almost always become an avoidant. I shut down, walk away, and don't look back. That's not healthy. So, here's the question: Can you face yourself and admit to your part? The first step toward healing is honesty.
Part 2: The Dangers of Skipping Levels. When we try to skip levels in life, we set ourselves up for a host of problems. Here's why: 1. Missed lessons equal repeated patterns. If you skip over a difficult period without fully processing it or learning from it, you're likely to repeat the same mistakes later on. Life has a way of bringing us back to the lessons we try to avoid. 2. Unprepared for new challenges. Each level of life teaches you something you'll need for the future. If you skip the hard work of building resilience, emotional intelligence, or financial literacy, you won't have the tools to handle the next level when it comes. 3. Imposter syndrome. When you rush into a new level of life without truly earning your place there, it's easy to feel like a fraud. You might have the external markers of success, but without the inner growth to match, you'll constantly question whether you belong. Skipping levels might seem easier in the moment, but it often leads to more challenges down the road. True progress requires patience, presence, and a willingness to learn. Part 3: Embracing Your Unique Journey. One of the hardest parts of staying present in your journey is resisting the urge to compare yourself to others. Let's be real, social media has turned life into one big scoreboard. Every scroll feels like a reminder of what you don't have yet. The marriage, the house, the business, the vacations, the perfect body, the picture-perfect family. And then you add in societal pressure, the voices telling you what you should have accomplished by 25, 30, 40, and suddenly you feel like you're running behind in a race that doesn't even belong to you. But here's the truth: everyone has a different assignment in life. What's yours won't look like anybody else's. What's meant for you won't pass you by, not if you keep showing up for yourself. The problem comes when you start chasing somebody else's timeline, because when you do that, you abandon your own path. You can't build your blessings on borrowed blueprints. The person you're comparing yourself to, you don't know the full story. You see the highlight reel, not the hidden cost. You see the win, not the wound. And half the time, the very thing you're envying isn't even real. It's staged, filtered, or financed by credit or scams. And trust me, I'm the last person to knock someone's hustle, which is why I keep my focus on me and mine. I learned a long time ago that everything that glitters— well, y'all know the rest. The bottom line is that you never know what goes on behind closed doors. Take this podcast journey, for example. You guys hear the finished product. You don't see the hours it take for me to produce one episode. From brainstorming topics to writing the treatment to recording and re-recording, editing, stopping, taking a nap, starting again, answering text messages, phone calls, answering the Twins 100th ma text with which usually costs a minimum of $20, feeding the dogs, creating the show notes, creating the show's artwork, uploading, piecing everything together, then publishing. It's a whole production, and the episode might only be 15 to 30 minutes tops. And that's just the podcast. I have a whole other situation going on simultaneously. So yes, it's a lot, but I made a commitment to myself to keep pushing, because there really is no skipping the process. So instead of asking, "Why am I not there yet?" try asking, "What's the lesson I'm supposed to learn right here?" Because the level you're on right now matters. The grind you're in today is shaping you for tomorrow. Here's how to embrace your unique journey. One, honor your pace. Life isn't a race. Some people might seem to be moving faster, but that doesn't mean they're ahead of you. Focus on your own pace and trust that you're exactly where you're meant to be. 2. Trust the process. Even when things don't make sense in the moment, trust that every level serves a purpose. The struggles, setbacks, and slow periods are all part of preparing you for what's next. 3. Avoid comparison traps. Remember, what you see of others' lives, especially on social media, is just a highlight reel. Don't compare your behind the scenes to someone else's carefully curated facade. Your journey is yours alone. Don't rush it, don't compare it, and don't skip the levels that are shaping you into the person you're meant to become. The Trigger and the Truth now has a dedicated call-in hotline, and I want you to use it. Take a moment to reflect on the levels you've already been through in life. Use the following prompts to guide your reflection. 1. What was a challenging period in your life that taught you an important lesson? 2. How did that lesson prepare you for where you are now? 3. Are there any patterns in your life that you've had to repeat because you didn't learn the lesson the first time? This exercise helps you see the value of past experiences and reinforces the importance of staying present in your current level. Exercise 2: Create a life level journal. Start a journal where you document each phase of your life, what you're learning, and how you're growing. Each entry should include: 1, the current phase or challenge you're facing; 2, what you're learning from it; 3, how you plan to apply that lesson moving forward. By keeping track of your journey, you'll be more aware of your progress and better equipped to handle future challenges. Exercise 3: Define your next level. Take a few minutes to visualize what your next level looks like. Use these prompts to guide your vision. What does leveling up mean to you mentally, physically, or financially? What lessons do you need to learn now to to prepare for that next level? What actions can you take today to stay present and committed to your current level? Write down your answers and revisit them regularly to stay focused on your growth. I'm not gonna hold you much longer today, but before we wrap, I need you to sit with this. Life is a journey made up of levels, and each one serves a purpose. You might not always understand why you're in the season you're in,. But I promise, it's not wasted. Every challenge, every delay, every closed door is shaping you for what's next. Don't rush the process. The work you're doing right now, the grind, the tears, the long nights, the lessons that feel like setbacks, are all preparing you for the win that's waiting for you. And if you skip the work, You skipped the preparation. You can't pray for the blessing while running from the building. Don't compare your path to anyone else's either. What's meant for you was designed with your name on it. You don't have to fight for what's yours. It won't miss you. The only way you miss it is by stepping off your own path trying to chase someone else's. So the next time you feel discouraged, remember this: The lessons you're learning right now are exactly what you need to be ready for the success ahead. Trust it, embrace it, and keep moving, because your win is on the way, but only if you do the work that gets you there. Thank you for tuning in to The Trigger and the Truth. If today's message resonated with you, share it with someone who might need a reminder to stay the course. Until next time, Stay present, trust the process, and keep leveling up, one step at a time.
