5 Button Mistakes Killing Your Conversions Right Now

This content was created by Todd Dickerson. This content was uploaded by Todd Dickerson. This is a YouTube Training Tuesday session titled "5 Button Mistakes Killing Your Conversions Right Now" (created 2026-01-28). It's an instructional livestream from ClickFunnels for "Funnel Hackers," hosted by a primary presenter (SPEAKER A) with guest Matt King, a ClickFunnels funnel builder. The video reviews practical button best practices and common mistakes: ensuring form buttons are set to "submit" (not just "next step"), hover/pressed states and animations, mobile sizing/padding to avoid the "thumb killer," color/contrast (the "squint test"), rounded corners and typography, one-click upsells/OTOs and downsells (attaching products to buttons), and the importance of split-testing and funnel hacking. Tone is hands-on training with live chat interaction and product-focused examples.

All right. Bingo. There we go. How are we? Rock stars. Great to see everybody here today. Start rolling in. Great to see you. Great to have you. Happy Tuesday. Happy training Tuesday as always, here at Click Funnels World Funnel Topia, as I like to call it. Gang, I'm excited about this one. This one today is something that Russell has talked about in all of his books. This one today is the most commonly talked about thing on YouTube amongst the gurus, because this one here today is unbelievably important. Today we're going to talk all about buttons and some really great changes you're probably going to be able to make to your buttons right now, today. So with me, as always, is normally our good friend Aaron. But today we have Matt King. Matt King is a funnel builder here at Click Funnels. Aaron's feeling a little bit under the weather. Don't worry. He's doing a.
Okay.
But Matt is with us today as a funnel builder of click funnels to help talk about some buttons, some staple things that we do constantly, and some great changes for you guys to make to your buttons today. So, Matt, how are you, brother?
I'm doing good, man. It's an honor to be here. I know it's some big shoes to fill, so I'm sure that we'll make it happen. And I know buttons sound kind of, you know, whatever, but we're going to make this awesome. And you guys are gonna be like, holy crap, this is going to be amazing.
I. I think you just nailed something. Buttons kind of sound like whatever. I hear people say that all the time. I mean, I don't know how many people I've coached, but really nobody pays attention to their buttons. We learn how important the headline and the sub headline is and then we just throw a button on the page. But to our customers, buttons are everything.
They're important. They're definitely going to make the difference between you can getting. Literally getting a sale or. Or not. So, yes, you have to pay attention to what you're doing with them for sure. 100.
So we have some great things to check out today. I'm going to hand it over to you, Matt. Take it away.
All right, let me get back over here on this page. So thank you so much, first of all. And we're going to talk a little bit about buttons. Button mistakes. And these are button mistakes. That they're. They're common. You look at them and you think to yourself, well, why are we even talking about this? But they're. They're common. They're more common. Than you would think. And we're going to fix them. So the first one we call the submit the submit ghost. So this is a page that we just kind of pulled up and we're gonna make this happen. So the first thing that I see, and I see this a lot, I've worked with a lot of folks in support and just looked at a page and went, why isn't this working? And it's very similar. You can actually see what these buttons. We're gonna look at this yellow button. We're gonna get to the fact that it's yellow here in a little bit, but you can see what the. What they're set up to do down in the bottom here. So it says it's going to the next funnel step. That's a ghost step, meaning it's just going to go to the next step. Now imagine that this is an order page and that we're trying to do an order. Most of the time you're going to have an actual order step or an order element. So you would go to your checkout like this. But I'm not going to talk too much about those here. But if you have it set up with the checkout element, it's probably going to work. But with an opt in, you're going to have input elements, you're going to have a button like this. It's going to have to be set to submit. And if you don't set these to submit, if you set it to go to the next funnel step, it's not going to work. So that is a pretty common thing. So what you're going to do, you're going to come into the button settings and you're going to come down to the. Where it says button action. And there's a lot of actions. Guys, there's a lot of stuff going on in here. I looked at this right before we started coming, before they said, hey, you're going to go do training Tuesdays. And I was like, cool, what are we talking about buttons? So we come in here and. And I was like, wow, there's a lot of stuff in here. Probably more than I even would have imagined. But what you want to do is make sure that the submit order form, that is a fix right there for this particular issue. So if you get the submit button set correctly, it's going to submit the form, it's going to carry the opt in information or the order information to the next page and it actually transmits. It goes into clickfunnels or active campaign or wherever you have it set up to go and then things happen. That's what we want. We want things to happen.
So we like things happening.
Yeah. This is the difference between it working or not.
So Matt really hit the nail on the head with that. And basically what it comes down to, gang, is anytime you're collecting customer information, whether it be personal information or financial, like on an order form like he was talking about, if you're collecting customer information, you must submit it with a submit button. So here's a quick horror story that I want you to avoid. I was working with one of our challengers in the one funnel away challenge years ago. They had an existing business and an existing pipeline to plug this offer into. So they were expecting great success when they started and they were starting with a lead magnet. So they ran thousands of dollars in ads and they ran thousands of dollars in promotions amongst influencers and others. And they had tons of. It was over 10,000 people view the page and 0 opt ins. And of course, as soon as I saw it, my heart dropped because I knew that's impossible. It's literally impossible to have that happen. So their funnel was not working. And of course we went and we looked at it and that button it was set to goes to next step and not submit. So, Matt, if you don't mind, can we show them that button was set to open the pop up? Because it would open the pop up. Can we go take a look at that pop up?
Yeah. How to set up the pop up or the actual pop up?
No, let's just go look at the actual pop up itself because that's where we're actually collecting the customer info.
Yep. Oh, yep. Good call. Good call right there.
So here we are, collecting customer info. Name, email, phone number. Anytime you're collecting info, that button right there must be set to submit. And the submit button has two functions, doesn't it, Matt? Number one, it submits and collects the customer information, but number two, it also takes them to the next funnel step.
Yep.
Bingo. So that is what we want our forms to look like, gang. So we never have any nightmare stories. And I'm not telling your story on a future training Tuesday, right?
Yeah. We definitely don't want to hear any more horror stories than we have to, so.
No, we don't. No. Cool. So that was submit of a button. Absolutely perfect. And the button action that we need if we're collecting customer info. What else you got for me, Matt?
Yeah, while we're kind of looking at this, I know we talked a little bit about the kind of the, the. The button. Sorry, the. The buttons. Actually, this one's pretty bright. So there's what's called the invisible hover. It's kind of an issue. Not a huge deal, but it makes the page a little bit more dynamic. It makes it a little bit more interesting so that you can kind of see the buttons, kind of see what's going on there. So there's a couple different things I'm going to talk about. One is the color, but I'll talk about that a little bit later. This particular situation is the hover states. So there are different states when you're looking at a button. If I can find where I put them. Standby. Where did I put them? We go to the button. Yeah. Anyway, there's different button states and you should be able to have like a button hover state, like a clicked state and a default state. As soon as I figure out where I put it, then I will show it. Maybe it's up in here on this one. We'll look at this one. Enabled. Disabled. Direct override. There it is. All right, so if you come in here, you got your different button states and you've got hover, you've got pressed. If you'll notice here, they're all. They're all yellow. They're just plain yellow. Like, this is pretty obvious it's a button because it's bright yellow. But sometimes you'll have a button where it's not quite as common or not. It's not as obvious that it's a button. So you might want to come in and just make like a subtle change to the hover area. That way when you're, you know, somebody actually hovers over it, it actually kind of shows that it's changing a little bit. So you could put in the hover state, you might want to put like a little bit of a. Maybe a little, you know, in this, it might look good to have like a red hue around the top, around it or something. Right. So that's actually the text color. We'll do the border like that. Then it's going to give you a little bit of change in there. That way when you hover over it, it changes a little bit. It just makes it a little bit more obvious and a little bit more interesting. Same thing with pressed state. You can do that and click. And then just when somebody clicks on it, it might change a little bit. Even the text could change a little bit, be a little bit bigger. Right. So it's just little subtle, slight changes for when you do something So I could go into preview the page because you can't see it on the editor page, but when you hover over it. Of course.
Course.
Oh, wait.
Oh, you were in the popup.
Yeah, it was a popup, wasn't it? Did I change the. The button here? I got the submit. Okay, let me go back. Change this to submit. That should be open popup like that. And then we're going to save that again and go back here and try that once more. Okay, so we're going to open the pop up and then we're going to come down here. So when you hover over it, you can see that that changes. And then when you click it. I'm not going to click anything, but. Because it's not going to submit anything because there's nothing up here anyway to submit. But when you click it, it would have another state and then it would go through. So that's kind of my. My spiel on.
You can also add really cool cover states, too. You guys have probably seen by just you being a consumer online, or maybe if you're on desktop, you put your mouse on a button and the button kind of shakes. Or, or maybe you can actually add animations where when a button is just on a page, it kind of bounces and jumps to attract attention. So a lot of really cool stuff we can do in the future. If you'd like to learn about some more button animations and cool things you can do, make sure to let us know down in the chat. We'd love to make a show about that. But for this one specifically, Matthew, I'll let you wrap that all up.
All right, well, here's a couple of those animations are actually in here in the settings and the advanced settings. Lots of different little things that you can do. Things that I haven't even looked at in a while, but they're there. So that's.
The list looks bigger than the last time I saw it, too.
Yep. Yeah, the list.
Yeah, the list looks a lot bigger than last time I saw it.
Yeah, there was a lot of stuff. I was kind of surprised. I was like, wow, there's a lot.
Okay, great. What's next?
Yeah, the next thing is called the. The Thumb killer. So this rep. What we're referring to is mobile. So if you're on a mobile device and you've got your button and if you're looking at a page and you're scrolling and you want to submit a page, you want to put your information and then you. You click on the button, but you Know, the button is like a. It's a weird size or it's small or you can't see it and it's, you know, maybe you've got fat finger. I got a weird thumb, guys. So literally, I think they named fat fat fingering off of my thumbs. So if you're sitting there trying to make that happen, then what you want to do is make. Make some changes to your mobile settings. So you actually want to go in and put a little bit of padding in there and just make it a little bit. A little bit more interesting or maybe not even more interest. Just give it a little extra size. Right. So you just come in here, over.
Because when I add padding to a button, that's actually adding the clickable area.
Correct. It is.
Right. Because I do it all the time. I'm trying to click a button and it's not actually clicking the right way. So I'm, you know, making my screen bigger and trying to get it. And. And that equates to friction. If your customers are doing that, that's friction in the process, and we're trying to remove that. So this is a huge move to removing friction that I would have to venture to guess not a lot of us are doing right now.
Yeah, I think, I think a lot of people are just putting the buttons in and just keeping it in the current state that it's in.
So maybe changing the background color. But yes, I agree. I've seen that probably more than anything else in my career because we do all this work and effort, we make our headlines, we write the copy, we have great images, and it all funnels them down to the last action they have, which is to click the button. Buttons really are important.
Yeah. And that fat fingering thing get a really annoys people like, just that are on there. Like, dang it. Why? You know, and then they get mad. They'll get mad at you or as the con, as the. The business, because they can't click your button. So you want to make it. Make it simple, make it easy, make it legible. So the font size on your mobile, you want to go in your mobile settings and just change things like that so that it's big enough so that they can actually read it. You know, that might be a little bit gawky and weird, but you know, get the idea what I'm talking about. So.
But I'd rather have a gawky, weird button like that that's clear and evident for people to click. And when they click, it works and helps them do the thing I'd rather be cute than. I'd rather be clear than cute every day of the week.
Yep. Definitely. For sure. That is. So that's that. Unless you had any questions on that, I can kind of roll right into the next.
We have had any questions from the chat. It looks like everybody's following along. Lovely. I'm right with you.
Good. All right, so the next thing, because we're already here, we're talking about buttons, is the squint test failure. All right, so the squint test is. It's. It's color contrast issue, and that is when the. This is kind of the opposite of a contrast issue here. This is kind of more of a clashy color thing. But imagine that this was a dart in this particular instance. Imagine you had, like, a gray button on a white background. It's going to be harder to see. Right. So you're going to be. Is that a button? Do I even know that that's a button? Like, you wouldn't even realize if that was like, an off color or in this case, maybe it was. Maybe this yellow was like a kind of a darker.
Yeah, let's make it like a blue. Like an offset blue.
Yeah, maybe. See. Oh, go into my custom colors here. Just make it like a darker. Like you said, like a darker offset.
Yeah. I don't know why somebody would want.
To do something like that. But imagine that that was even now or something was the color or something. Right?
Yep.
And then, you know, of course, I mean, something like this, you'd probably want.
To have like this all the time. You're not far off, Matt. I see this all the time.
Yep. I mean, it's not too bad. I mean, you could still kind of tell, but it's not exactly obvious, you know, so you're still gonna go through here and be like, what. What is this? You know, but if, you know, make it something that. It doesn't have to be bright yellow on a. On a dark blue background, but make it something that is obvious. You know, something like that. It looks good on the page, and people are going to hover over it. They're going to see it. You can put in the little hover effects, and everything's gonna look good on there. Right? So.
And you have, you know, you have your brand guidelines to go off of, gang. So, like, yes, highlighter yellow might not be a part of your brand. That might not be a color that you use. Maybe pink is a color, or blue or green. Yes. So use the colors that your brand has established, but Please, when you're doing so, be bold. Make sure. Like the thing I think of a lot of times is like, I think luxury, think med spa. We've all seen like med spa ads. We've all been to like med spa landing pages. Right. If you haven't, feel free to go. They all try and have the luxury feel to them. And you look at med spas and a lot of them have a gray background and like white buttons or just dark gray buttons. And a lot of their buttons don't really stand out. And maybe that's fine for like a homepage. But if you're running traffic and you're running funnels, we want our calls to actions. We want our buttons to be bold and to bright. And when I look at that green button standing there, my eye is drawn to it. It clearly says click here to join. I know what I'm doing. We have to have run our buttons like that.
Yep. If you really want to go for some advanced moves, you can get some like you can make your background graphic with some arrows in it that kind of subtly point towards the button. A lot of people do that. Russell Brunson does that. I know it's. It's been done before so many times. Yep. So you want to move on to the next one? Yeah, let's do it.
That's amazing.
So I got one more, one more major one. Unless anybody else wants some, you know, some cool ideas or something. But we have the, what's called the lost upsell. So a while ago, I would say like 15, 20 years ago, the idea of the one click upsell kind of came into play with where when you buy something. So imagine you went through this process. You went through, you per. You opted in, you purchased something. I'm not going to build out an actual OTO or a one time offer page for this particular setup. But the concept is the same. You might have a button for a one click upsell and that one click upsell, same thing as before. Like the very looping back to the first thing we talked about. You can have that button action accidentally set up for the wrong thing. You might have it set to nothing happens. You might have it set up to go to no link or go to and it just goes directly to the confirmation page which is going to do the same thing as nothing happens. So what you want to do on those upsell pages, because you're going to take somebody through that, you want to increase that average order sale. Right. You want to make more money per sale as somebody's coming through here. So you're going to have an opt in, you're going to have an order page, an OTO one, maybe an OTO two. And the quickest, easiest, most professional way to do it is with a one click upsell. So you're going to make sure to, you know, whatever you're selling, you're going to set that up and you're going to give them the option to buy that by clicking on it one time. Now here's a little kind of a gotcha on this. Imagine that this is an OTO page and that you're selling something and, and that button is the yes button. So when they click on that, they're saying yes to buy. Right. So where'd it go? So that one click upsell. So I just set that to one click upsell. But there's no products attached to this particular page. So you're going to edit the page, you're going to add your product, whatever it is that you're selling on here. We'll say, because there's a very convenient leak proof water bottle sitting right here, I'm going to put that on there. So there's 60 prices available for that apparently as well. So we'll just say that that's it. But you want to set your products and we're going to click X on that. Now we have, it's loading the product. I might actually have to set, might actually have to set something with one price or.
But essentially what you're showing here is that you can just attach a product to the button itself. So they click the button, they purchase the product associated.
Yep, that's the idea behind it. And then the. But the, the product would actually show up here. Like if you just have like one digital product, it's gonna show up here without any major issues. I just picked something that apparently has like 60 different variations on it. So let me try that one more time. What do we have? There's all kinds of stuff in here. Oh, you know what it is because of the, the workspace that I'm in.
Yes, you're in workout with.
Oh, oh yeah. It's all the. Here, let's do, let's do this. This looks like a Digital product. Physical. 47 bucks. Let's get rid of this. So if you're like, hey, that was the wrong product, of course you can just click the X.
Easy peasy.
Hopefully X. Anyway, it should work, but you guys get the idea anyway. So X is not working. But once you have that set up to do one click upsell. You select the product that way, people just have to click on it and bam, you're done. I, I see that a lot where people just don't set it up correctly or they set it up using the wrong, the wrong style. There is another way to do that with the checkout element. So you could actually do that whole thing with the checkout element. And then there's buttons in there that you can set up as well. But they, they should just kind of work as upsells. If they're on an upsell page though.
Exact. Yes. Natively, if they're an upsell page, they'll work for everybody that stuck around and hung out with us. Let me share, let me share some stuff with you. Now that Matt went and opened up this can of worms. We're going to talk experts. We're going to talk ecom. Let's say you're an expert and you sold somebody an ebook. And after the ebook you want to take them to an upsell. OTO one. And OTO one is going to be get a course. Get the whole course that teaches you this ebook. But somebody says no to the course. With these OTO buttons, you can have an exit pop where if they say no to the course, you could offer them the micro version of the course. Again, putting more ways for them to buy products, more ways for them to say yes to you. Increasing the aov. Because that is the power of a funnel. Funnels, in case you're new to this world. Funnels. Higher conversions, higher average order values, gives you leverage in a bazillion different ways. So that's on the expert side of things. Right? And we can do those exit pops based on do you want one on one coaching? No, I don't want one on one. Okay. Exit pop to an OTO button that says, okay, you don't want one on one, but how about group coaching? Right? More ways to make sales. Increasing aov. Let's hop over to the ecom side of things. I'm selling. Oh, okay. I'm selling supplements. Somebody buys my supplements. And then OTO1 should be Moss. More of the same, right? So somebody buys my supplements. Maybe they buy three. A three pack of my supplements on the order form. I take them to the upsell and I say, moss, hey, do you want three more? They say no. I open up a pop up that now has two buttons. Okay, would you like one more or just two more? More ways to make more sales and revenues. Increasing the aov gang, those OTO buttons. I hope that articulates. I Hope that made sense. Those OTO buttons are unbelievably powerful throughout your entire funnel.
Yeah, I agree with that. They're. They're definitely going to. There's so many ways to set it up too. I've seen people put them in the. The pop ups. So if they say no, it opens up the pop up. Instead of having more than one page, you can just put your. Your actual downsell in the. In the pop up. So you can actually turn your pop up into a downsell and then stick that on the page as well. So.
Used to previously be a downsell, you can become another upsell, which also has another downsell embedded inside of it. Because here's the thing we know from customer research, three otos is where you're really going to hit the limit of, like, this is too much. I definitely see some people that have more than three. There's still ot. There's still funnels out there that run five and seven otos, and they still kind of work. But for the most part, the market gets angry after three otos. So if I can have each of my OTO pages also including the downsell embedded on, it could higher. We get leverage over customers. Right. And this is how we do it. My. My. My. Sorry. Leverage over competitors. My competitor is running the typical three otos, but I. My otos, each one of them has an upsell and a downsell right inside of it. So my competitor has three upsells available at all times, where I have six, because each of my page has an upsell and a downsell on there. That's the kind of stuff that helps you really win in this world. Awesome explanation, Matt. I appreciate that.
Yeah. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. And so.
So if I'm not mistaken, I think that's everything we planned on talking about with buttons today. Yes. Yeah.
Unless you wanted to talk any other styling round corners, you know, little things like that or something.
Matt, you hit the nail on the head.
You.
You mentioned earlier you think a lot of times people just kind of take a button and just put it on the page. And I do think you're right with that. So let's just get back to foundations for two seconds to round out this call. What everything should come down to. Funnel hacking.
Yep.
So as. As you've seen these things today, the cool things you learned, and also there's more capabilities with buttons that you haven't learned yet. So after this, after seeing this, you should go funnel hack. You should go look at your competitors, your 3 to 5 to 10 of the people you are trying to compete against right now, today. And you should go look at all of their buttons. You should, you should see what the common trends amongst all of their buttons are. And then you should implement that into you, because that's the best practice. They're not all doing the same things because it doesn't work. They're all doing the same things because it does work and it makes them money. One of the things we should be looking for along with the color of the button, the size of the color, the typography of the color, like what fonts they're using on their buttons themselves, or also any emojis and icons, like we have an arrow at the end of our button. You should pay attention to all of those things as well as corners. Let if there's only one thing that you did. It seems silly, but we have seen a million split tests over the years where button corners make a difference in conversions. So you might have right now hard corners on your button or you might have the kind of corners that Matt is showing right here. But as you go look and funnel hack your competitors, you might see that they all have rounded corners or you might see they all have hard corners. So note those things as you're looking, as you're funnel hacking, as you're being observational, know all of those things. And how do we make, how do we make corners rounded and click funnels.
Yeah, the way that you're going to make them rounded, you're going to go into your button settings. If you don't see this one, I was actually able to make the corners straight edge on the left side and rounded on the right side, you can actually get that, that in that into it. But if you go into the settings there and then you come all the way down to the bottom. Ish. Somewhere down there should be corners as an option. So you're going to check that and then you're going to come in here and I, I've enabled. If you don't want to get that, you know, intricate. You can disable the separate, the separate edges and you can just kind of get there. It is all one setting, one slider and you can set it. So I would set this. It could partially. It could be depending on your style. But if you're funnel hacking and you're funnel hacking somebody that has straight edge buttons, you might want to be and you're in the same niche, the same market, and you know that those buttons are what other people in that niche are responding to, then you probably want to keep the same style. So you might want to keep that straight edge right there. Right. And. But if it's more of a rounded one like that, then do that. If it's looks more like that, then do that.
You know, or maybe you currently have exactly what your competitors are doing, but you've never split tested trying rounded edges. So feel free to run a split test around the edges and let's make sure everybody's doing what works best. Or maybe you find a golden nugget nobody knows about that increases your conversions.
Exactly. Yep. And split, split testing is what. I don't know if it was Russell that said it or not. Somebody said if you're not split testing, you're just a lazy marketer. Yeah. Definitely make sure you're split testing. You got your colors, your corners, your color, the font, even the fonts, the words on there. You know, there's all kinds of things. And it's too easy to run a split test with click Click Funnels. You might as well just do it.
So yes, a hundred percent. Maybe we'll have to append whoever said that if you're not split testing in Click Funnels, you're a lazy marketer because it really is easy. On that note, gang, maybe you'd like to learn about split testing in the future. If there's anything that you would like to learn about, and if you're new to the Training Tuesday series, I'd love to give you a soft nudge.
