Domains in ClickFunnels: Setup, DNS, and Free Domains

Tyson and Devin Weber show how to set up domains in ClickFunnels 2.0, including where to buy them (IONOS offers a free .com for one year), the difference between root domains and subdomains, and how to add DNS records through your registrar. Propagation usually takes minutes, though it can take up to 72 hours.

Hey, hey, hey! What's up, everybody?
What is up?
We're coming to hang out with you on Tuesday, just like you normally do. This is coaching corner for those of you who are not not frequent flyers. And today we got a new guest. We got Mr. Devin Weber. If you know who he is, awesome. If you don't, well. Welcome.
I've been, I've been so busy on coaching calls on my schedule that I finally was like, hey, I have an open block, so I guess I'm not going to leave Tyson stranded today. So I'm really excited about that.
Me too, greatly. Um, yeah, as I say every week, this is gonna be a fun one, right? I mean, this is gonna be one that I feel like— well, I don't know how to describe it honestly. We have a lot of questions around this specific topic And we decided why not just pull back the curtain a little bit, show somewhat of a tutorial-based training today on how to do this thing. I'm not— I don't know why I'm gatekeeping. We're just— we're talking about domains today, guys.
Tyson said today I'm gonna share my 3 secrets with you.
Um, yeah, we're gonna demystify domains a little bit around the platform, how to add them, how to connect them to your site, to your funnels? What's the difference between a root domain and a subdomain? And all the stuff that, again, we get asked this stuff, it feels like daily. I don't know, maybe daily. Would you, would you say that's fair?
I would say it's, it's maybe even twice a day.
Twice a day. Yeah, we have our daily regiments of domain questions and we are well above the ratio. Okay, so Yeah, that's, that's pretty much it. Let me go and share my screen here and we can dive on in. All right, um, so yeah, Domains Demystified: how to set them up, connect them inside of ClickFunnels. Uh, we're basically just going to show you how to connect a domain, whether it's through IONOS, whether it's through Namecheap. Actually, there's only 2 platforms we're gonna do today just for the sake of time. But, um, you can technically get a free domain inside of ClickFunnels 2.0 if you didn't know that. you can get your, your first one in the house. So you might as well take advantage of that. We'll show you how to do it in the walkthrough here in a little bit. But, um, yeah, partnership with IONOS. They're, they're kind enough to let us do this. No, I'm just kidding. Um, that's pretty much it. DNS, I feel like, is what trips people up the most when, uh, when doing this. As soon as we like start talking about adding records to your DNS, and it just sounds like we're talking in a whole different language, and we start losing people. It's not as crazy as it sounds. Would you say so? Would you agree with that?
I feel like, you know, once you see the screen where it's like, these are the domain record DNS records you have to add, that's where usually people get a little caught up. You know, obviously there is the automatic setup that we have on ClickFunnels that we're, you know, hoping to walk you through. But sometimes what ends up happening is, you know, for whatever reason, it just can't communicate with the registrar that you're using. And so you might end up in a manual setup. And so I think that's where people usually get a little scared, but it's, it's all about just like knowing what you're looking at and where it needs to go in the DNS records. And so we're hoping to just truly clear that up overall.
Honestly, yeah. And really, it's just like a copy and paste scenario where we are just— we're taking it from one end and just plugging into the other end. And that's it. That's— it's just, it's as crazy as that. Copy and paste. Bring it back to pre-internet days, you know, early. Yeah, that's pretty much it. That's a highlight of what we're running today. So first off, where can you actually buy a domain? Where, where can you go? I mentioned one already, IONOS. That is one where you can, you can get your free domain inside of the platform here. Personally, my personal preference is Namecheap still. I feel like I can't get away from it because I have so many domains over there still.
And they live up to their name. I think that's the thing. And I think that's why I'm always so keen to going to Namecheap, even if I'm not going to manage my DNS in Namecheap. It's like you can't beat the, hey, we'll give you a .com domain for $3 for the first year. I'm like, I mean, sure, I'll give you $3.
Exactly. Why, why pay more when you don't have to? It goes up to the regular rate of like $12 if you get a .com after the fact, but after whatever term you initially purchased it at.
I'll probably keep buying my domains on Namecheap until they change their name to Name Expensive.
Okay. And I'll probably go somewhere else. Yeah, I don't know how they're able to give like crazy discounts all the time, but they do. So worth mentioning. Um, other locations— GoDaddy. I feel like that's extremely popular. A lot of people have domains over at GoDaddy as well. It's a, it's a place. It's not my personal preference, but it's there, you know. We deal with what we have. Um, and then Cloudflare. Cloudflare does a couple different things. One, you can actually buy the domain directly from it, but I— Devin's probably on the same page with this— we prefer to manage our DNS records actually in Cloudflare. Um, a couple reasons for that: security, they have better redirects from what I can— better control over like redirects and whatnot, uh, when it comes to the domain. And, um, that's pretty much it. Those are my arguments.
Why I would say too, like when you're first starting out, when you first see Cloudflare for the first time, it looks a little intimidating. But then once you understand like all the bells and whistles and what everything does, you're like, oh, okay, it's kind of the same thing, just in a different spot.
Yeah, honestly, I feel like I don't touch 90% of the platform. I touch like 2 areas of the platform, and that's, that's really it.
Their free plan is more than enough. I'll just say that. If you're like, you know what, maybe I'll try out Cloudflare, they sneak the paid plans when you're logging in for the first time right in front, and then sometimes the free plan is literally like tucked under the bottom. I've never given them a penny, and it's done more than enough for me.
Yeah, I've never paid them anything for what they do, but, uh, it is there, and Yeah, that's actually kind of crazy to say. We've been using it for years. I've never paid them a dime.
Just waiting for them to change their mind on us.
Yeah, yeah, it's fine. We'll keep rolling with it until they, I don't know, smarten up. I don't know, whatever I wanna say here. Yeah, that's it. I mean, there's other locations as well, but these are the frequent flyers I feel like I see most and that we typically navigate between. Final thing before we jump in, I feel like this question comes up, when to use your root domain versus a subdomain inside of ClickFunnels. Um, maybe we gotta answer 2 questions on this one. What is a root domain? What is a subdomain? A root domain is actually, if you look up here at the very top of my screen, maybe can you see that? Is it visible? I don't know how to enlarge that, but—
Yeah, are you talking about the headline?
Yeah, the actual URL at the top of the screen that I've highlighted.
Oh, I mean, it's, it's pretty small from like where I'm seeing it.
Pretty small. Okay, let me You know, I'm gonna go ahead and just grab this guy real quick, and we're gonna go into the editor here so I can blow it up even larger. We'll duplicate this real quick. Bada bing, bada boom. Backspace, paste. Okay, that's a little bit larger.
Perfect. Yeah, no, that's that's more than enough.
Okay, beautiful. Okay, the root domain is everything before this first period right here. This guy right in the middle between builders and myclickfunnels.com. Okay, so myclickfunnels.com is what is referred to as the root domain. It's the base that everything kind of gets built off of, right? The subdomain is the front portion, everything before the first period in the URL right there. So builders in this case is a subdomain. And that's it. Those are the 2 differences behind it. Do you have anything to add to the sub versus root domain there? I could go—
One common thing I always tell people, like, if you're really confused on like what a subdomain is, that sometimes will like blow people's minds, is www. is a subdomain. It is just the most common subdomain that is used. It's, it's very recognizable and everything like that. And so that usually helps paint a picture of like, well, what's a subdomain? It's like, well, even when you're typing www.yourdomain.com, that www is a subdomain, and then everything Anything after that is the root.
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Uh, so it could be something like shop, it could be ilovefunnels. There we go, that's pretty clear, right? That's a, that is a subdomain, everything before. So, uh, it could be whatever you want, uh, before it's— and they are separate entities. I feel like everyone kind of refers to www as if it's a root domain And I think it's just how it's been perceived or presented throughout time, I guess.
You know what's the best part about subdomains, Tyson?
No.
You don't have to purchase another domain to get a subdomain.
Oh yeah, you know, honestly, that is the best part. You're right, it's free. You can just do it and you don't have to pay them an extra, extra cent.
Did you say free?
I didn't realize you were speaking my language until you said it free.
That's great.
Um, yeah, they're free. Some, some domain hosts or registrars are more giving than others, but I've seen— I think it's Namecheap— it allows you to technically create up to 500 subdomains, which is insane. I don't think you ever need to use 500 subdomains. It's a lot. I can't, I can't imagine having that many different—
What about all the different ideas I have on a daily basis?
You can fulfill whatever dream or fantasy you want with a subdomain as you please. Uh, 500 is a Pretty large, large list there.
Um, that's gonna be my goal. I'm gonna try to max out the subdomains they'll allow me to do and see how many I can come up with. Just so when people are like, I don't know what to do for a subdomain, I'm like, well, here's my PDF guide on the 500 different subdomains that you can use in your root domain. Okay, anyways, we digress.
That's it. All right, subdomain versus root domain. Hopefully that helps clear it up a little bit. We don't have to go much deeper than that, honestly, on the definition. Just know that the front portion When we refer to it as sub, the middle portion and beyond is root. Okay.
What do you say you push my presentation up here, Tyson, and I can— you guys want to get a free domain here real quick just to see how that looks on the backend?
I like where you're going. I like where your head's at here. Let me just pull up your screen and we can dive on in.
Cool. Let me know when I'm— let me know when I'm up because I had to go off into a different profile for my ClickFunnels account here.
You are up. I see you visually.
Perfect. So the first thing we're going to want to do if we're just on the front end of ClickFunnels is we're going to want to go over to the workspace settings. Once we're in the workspace settings, you can head over to the domains tab. And luckily, I didn't even notice until today, um, I never claimed my free domain in this workspace. So we were like, well, might as well use it. Um, so what you would do is we'd click— sorry, I didn't mention— you click this add domain button here, and then we can click the Get a free domain option. The add an existing domain is if you've already purchased a domain, like from GoDaddy, Cloudflare, wherever, and you want to do— you want to add it into ClickFunnels, or if you want to do like a subdomain, this is kind of where you'd be living here. But we're going to click on get a free domain. And this is still all done through IONOS, right, Tyson?
Through IONOS, yep.
Okay, perfect. So what we'll do is then we're just going to search for a domain. I will. What do you think? I mean, we can, we can do any— the world is our oyster here. What should we do for this free domain?
Uh, you know, I like the ilovefunnels subdomain I was using. Maybe— I don't know if that's even available. I bet you it's not.
But yeah, let's bring it back to the basics here.
Devin. Yeah. Okay.
Please tell me this is available.
Let's see.
We will search it. devinsuperawesome.com.
Exact match.
This is what we're getting. Is that spelled right? Devin is super awesome. Looks good to me. Look, exact match. Great choice. I should have worn my Devin is super awesome shirt today. Um, and then as you see here, it is free. You get it free for 1 year. Um, and that's just on the house here at ClickFunnels, which is super cool. So what we'll do is we're just going to add to cart, and then I might, I might have to cut my screen share if it's going to ask for card details here real quick, but let's see.
I think that's fully understood. That's okay. 100%, save 100%. You don't have to do that. Continue to checkout.
There we go.
And you're probably right, you will have to stop in a second.
Oh, I'm gonna—
I got you. Hold on.
Yeah, if you want to cut my screen share, I'm going to do this as quickly as possible. Um, it is loading, but it is loading as slow as molasses.
Uh, do you have molasses? We can compare times.
That's— I mean, we could. I just, I feel like, I feel like this is slower. Okay, we're getting somewhere. It's loading. Uh, were you able to kill my screen share on that side?
Yeah, it's killed.
Okay, cool. So then what I will do is Okay, I'll let you know when I purchased it and then I'll share again.
Do you want to give us the unlimited spending card that, uh, that you and a friend would like to use? Uh, I have domains I'd like to purchase.
Guys, I've added a balance to this card. For a limited time, you can buy your domains too for free.
Okay, you know, that would be fun.
Let's see. Okay, I'm gonna mute my mic because I think my mechanical keyboard— does my mechanical keyboard come through really heavy when I'm typing?
Go for it.
Okay, let's see.
Yeah.
Okay, I'm, I'm gonna—
I got you, you're good. Gotcha, you're muted. Well, while he's doing that, how's your day, uh, how's your guys' day going? I see a question here. Don't know how a subdomain Why subdomain don't work for you? Okay, so difference, what we were talking about earlier, it was just bringing down subdomain versus a root domain. Uh, and if we're going back to the example here, while Devin is entering his, his sensitive information, um, I'll go back to kind of explain this. So all we're referring to or talking about there is the difference between what it is, what a subdomain is and what a root domain is. It's really just, it comes down to The URL itself that we're looking at here, and everything after the first period that we see there, right, is going to be the root domain. That's just what we're talking about. It's just what is considered to be the root domain. Whenever you hear that conversation, this is what people are talking about, is your domain without anything in front of it. The subdomain is going to be this front portion right here, right? So builders in this case would be the subdomain. that basically lives on top of the root domain. Maybe another way to describe this, I think I actually put it here, is think about it as if the root domain is your home base and the subdomains as different rooms inside of it, right? Root domain is the home. I don't know how to do that with my hands.
A home.
And then say the subdomain is like the chimney we have on the house or something. I don't know, or the lawn ornaments we have out front, or a room that is inside of it. It's just that— yeah, anyways, hopefully it helps kind of clear that up a little bit. Let me pull this back down. Remove. Boom. How's it going over there, Mr. Devin?
Um, I am— I think I'm done. I just, I just— they asked for some— they asked for like a drop of blood too. I don't I don't know, maybe I clicked on the wrong thing. Um, I'm taking a chance because I know, you know, we kind of partner with them, so I figured they're good people, so there's probably a reason for that. You know, it's a different level of verification. Um, but I think everything is good. I'm just waiting for this window to, to load back because it should. Basically, once you go through the process, I'll just kind of audibly guide you guys through it. Once you go through the process, what it basically made me do is it had me Create an account, and then everything was good. And then it brought me up with a prompt to bring me back to ClickFunnels. So I am back on ClickFunnels. You can share my screen again. Beautiful. Cool. And let me know when I'm good there.
You're good.
Yep. Okay, perfect. So then I'm just gonna see. It told me. It tells me after the fact that that domain was. Well, it's probably purchased.
If you go back to Ionos, I bet you. Maybe www because it's already been used, or maybe they have a record in there. So open up your IONOS account that you probably you just created.
Okay, let's see.
Cool, cool. See. Oh.
What is happening?
It's— I think it's loading back to the login screen. Oh, it's already— because you already logged in. Okay, up in the top right.
Yeah, my eyes. I guess we were joking around a little too much there, Tyson. I didn't think they were gonna ask me so, so much information here.
No.
Um, yeah, it says it's there.
Devin Weber is awesome. It's currently in setting up mode. So it's not, it's not fully— okay, I think it's just because you— it's a fresh domain, just purchased it.
Well, why don't we, why don't we do this then? Um, because who knows how long that's going to take. Do you want to— do you want to go ahead and select DNS? Did that work?
Yeah, go to DNS at the top, DNS tab. Yeah, that's it. We just got to give it time. Cool.
All right, cool. And it looks like too, based on what we have here, that we should have the records in place. We have the domain verification here, we have the CNAME record already. Um, some of these stuff we probably won't need, but we won't go into like what to remove, what not to at this point. What I'm curious of is if we go back into domains, if it actually is in here. Maybe possibly, or do I have to physically add it once I've purchased it?
Might have to re-add it. Go back to add domain and do existing now, or get another free.
Yeah, how many, how many free ones can I get? No, it's superawesome.com. Sorry for everyone wearing headphones, my mechanical keyboard probably just Hurt your soul.
You're good.
And then so—
oh, it's unavailable.
Okay, okay, it's okay.
I'll show you how to do it while it's still rendering and setting up. It could take a few minutes, honestly.
Yeah, this is— so this is, this is actually— I, I like that we ran into something though, because I would hate for it to work like perfectly for us and then somebody to do this on their own and they're like Where's my domain? What's happening? All that stuff. So just to recap, really, I mean, we went through the process, we got the domain in IONOS, and then I went back into my IONOS account to basically look at the DNS and see that the records were there. So this is just proof that it's just going to take a little bit of time for everything to kind of communicate between IONOS and ClickFunnels. We should see that domain kind of populating into the account eventually. But why don't we, for the last 10 minutes, Tyson, do you want to, um, maybe open like Namecheap and we can show them how subdomains work?
Oh, I'm on it. It's already shared right now.
Cool.
Okay, so, um, all we have to do basically is go to the domain that you have already purchased. Right now I'll just go to domain list. I have other ones there, but I already have the one selected I want to use, which is tysonzimmer.com, the one that we're still—
Actually, let me cut mine. Let me cut mine because we're still showing as my screen, it looked like.
Gotcha. There we go. What about now?
Yeah, you're good.
Okay. All right. Um, yeah, we have tysonzimmer.com and I want to add this to ClickFunnels. So first thing we have to do is head over to ClickFunnels directly here. I'm going to go to workspace settings on the bottom left, click on that. After that, we're gonna go ahead and click on domains on that left-hand navigation. From there, we're gonna go ahead and click on add domain in the top right-hand side of the screen. And from there, we're gonna go ahead and click on Add Existing Domain. Bada bing, bada boom. All right, I'm gonna do something crazy here. I'm gonna say, uh, subdomain.tysonzimmer.com. All right, so you can kind of clearly see what the subdomain is.
For a second, I thought you were gonna do a subdomain off the domain I just bought.
Come on. Um, you can see it already popped up as a subdomain there. It's already put us in that category. And we're gonna continue from there. It's going to basically just give us the records that we need to add over in Namecheap. But first off, let's say, well, I'm gonna go with manual setup. Personally, I go with manual setup in instances where I have other, I don't know, maybe like a website set up under this domain or any other thing like that. I wanna make sure that I, I'm kind of a control freak to some degree when it comes to tech. I wanna make sure that I'm only setting up what I want set up. Sometimes the automatic setup gets crazy. Just kidding. If that's all you have and it's, you know, you're using it as your website, using ClickFunnels as your website, then you can go with the automatic setup.
And I also think it's good for us to show them the manual setup because in the event that they try to do an automatic and for whatever reason that they just can't, um, you know, this is a good place to really show how the records go from here to where they need to be.
Agreed. So basically all this is is a copy and paste scenario, kind of what we were talking about earlier. Where I'm gonna go in and just click on a little copy button next to the value side of these guys right here, or what's listed here. And we're gonna head back to Namecheap. We're gonna click on add record or add new record right here. It's gonna be in red. And the first one is gonna be a TXT record. So we're just gonna scroll down until we see that exact value kind of listed there, TXT. The host in our situation is gonna be the symbol. So we're basically taking the name. Sometimes it'll be listed as name, sometimes it'll be listed as host. You'll see it varies from different platform, but in our case, we're gonna leave it as is.
Basically just the first box after you select the record is gonna be where you're gonna put that.
Pretty much, yeah. I like to do them all in one go, so I just click on Add New Record, and then I just continue down the list and approve them after everything's kind of added. So next one in line is gonna be the subdomain here. For subdomain, the CNAME for subdomain. Clever. Ah, thank you. Thank you. I tried hard on that one. We're looking for CNAME because that's what the record said over here. CNAME. And for these, the hostname again, it's just the same thing as name. And we have subdomain because that's what I put over in ClickFunnels. From there, we're going to paste in what we have copied, and then we're going to go and add new record. But I mean, boom, onto the next one. Now, this is the only one where it's going to be like a unique case. In my case, I just— I copy— you have to copy both of these guys. So copy this, the value first, go back, and we're looking for TXT records in this case. Paste in the value.
While you're pasting that into— I just want to point out, like, your registrar that you're using might look a little different, but like the same rules are going to apply, right? You're just adding the records and then you're kind of copying and pasting based on what it's saying there. What ClickFunnels does so well, even if you're doing a manual setup, is it gives you the exact pieces that you need to copy and paste over. So as long as you know how to copy and paste, don't sweat it too much.
Yeah, agreed. What was this? Oh, _DMARC. You can technically go back and copy this as well. You don't have to write it, write it out.
But Tyson likes to do it the hard way. He's writing all of them.
Sometimes that is the case. Yeah, like this one. CF2 mail, and we just need this value here and paste. Cool.
Really quick too, as you're checking these off, one question I got yesterday in regards to domains was, well, Devin, when, when you're looking at those records, what's the difference between the top 2 records and like the last 4? Really, the top 2 records technically is all you need to get the domain to like function in ClickFunnels. But here's the caveat. If you ever wanted to use your domain for like email purposes with workflows and stuff, and trust me, that's going to come up. If you don't have those records in place, you simply can't do it. And so even though it's saying optional, I'm going to go as far as saying, because I know you guys are an awesome bunch and you're going to have workflows and automations and everything like that, in this case, let's not make it optional. Let's just put those in there. Let's not worry about it later on.
Agreed. Now, last part here is the ceremonial confetti. So click on Continue here, let it do its thing, and within a moment or two I should see confetti. Oh, there we go. That's what we're looking for. All right, the main is ready to use now, and we can basically hit Done. Uh, actually, I should, I should verify or elaborate here. It is not fully ready to go. What we need to wait for is it to say Connected. Just like this. If you click on the domain name directly or the gear icon, it should give you some updates around what is going on with this domain around the securing process. So right now the domain ownership has been verified, DNS record sets, but we're waiting for SSL and the domain to be live. Once these are all green checkmarks and you're good to go, then that's it. Now you can use this domain. One thing to clear up here is that you can use a different domain for your sites. You can use a different domain for your funnels. Those are 2 different locations that you can customize the domain. We're using it inside of the platform. There's other things, other places where your domain comes into play, such as emails, and that's kind of a conversation for a different day. But for now, if I back out here, I'm going to show you those 2 locations where you can kind of set that domain and use it. Um, just because I know we're coming down to the last 3 minutes here, uh, let's go to Site and Blog first. Now, if you don't have this—
can you move, Tyson?
How fast can I move? If you don't already have this app added, just go to Add Apps over here in the left-hand navigation, click on that, and you're just scrolling through and looking for Site and Blog, uh, which is going to look exactly like—
I think it's towards that right here.
Yeah, well, I already have it added, so now it's sinking towards the bottom. If you don't have it added, it will be towards the top. Once you have it added, you just want to click on that directly in the left-hand navigation and click on Site Settings. Alright, now, if you scroll down just a tad, you should see the option to adjust the site domain, right? Just click in this dropdown here. And you can select and use the one that you would like to use. You can already see that the one we created is good to go. So within the span of me clicking around a few times, the domain is ready to use, and I can now apply it. If you don't see it in the dropdown, it just means it's not finished with the connection process and it doesn't say connected yet inside of the platform. After that, just scroll back up to the top, update site, and now you are using your domain for your site. Now that means a couple things. We are using the site or that domain for your websites, your blog, your course courses, uh, your landing pages, right? All those are going to come from the domain we have set up right here inside of the site settings. If you want to use a separate domain and you want to make sure that it's not the exact same one that you are using for your websites or your landing pages, then you're going to want to use a funnel. And we'll go to funnels directly on the left-hand navigation to show you that. Click on funnels. And from there, let's go to this guy for an example, Lead Squeeze Funnel 4. All right. If I want to change the domain for this, all I have to do is go up here to the little gear icon on the top right side of the screen. And there should be a similar dropdown for domain, this guy right here. And just select your domain. From there, scroll down to the bottom and update funnel. That's it. We did that in a span of what, 10, maybe under 10 minutes to get this thing updated.
Or I'm gonna start calling you Lightning McQueen. You're moving fast.
I'm sweating here. My goodness.
One last thing to just touch on here really fast.
Yeah.
Um, DNS records sometimes take time to propagate, um, even down to like the securing process too. So if it doesn't, you know, populate right away and you go back and you check the connection, don't sweat it. It could literally take up to 72 hours.
