Day 18: Overwhelmed and Ready to Quit? Do This Instead…

Tony Stark Policci discovered thousands stolen from his business account and felt like quitting. Instead of spiraling, he focused on winning the next five minutes through breath and posture. Five minutes of deliberate attention can rewire your prefrontal cortex and calm your nervous system.

Okay, today is day 18, and today I had to remind myself, and maybe you need to hear this too, that I don't always need to win the whole damn day, but I do need to win the next 5 minutes. And example, this morning I woke up to a very unpleasant surprise. I had a few thousand dollars sucked out of my business account, all due to some nasty little bugger who perpetrated fraud against me back in January. Now, I have spent more hours than I care to count dealing with this nonsense, and it's been a tug of war. But this morning, I was just out of gas. Like, I wanted to throw my hands up in the air and say, screw it. I almost slipped into victim mode, right? But here's the thing. When life feels overwhelming, when my brain wants to spiral into what's wrong or what's missing, that's the moment that I get to zoom in. Now, it's either I zoom in on the problem or I zoom in on the next choice. I can't control what happened yesterday. None of us can. But I can control my breath. I can control how I sit. I can control how I speak to myself and what I do next, right? That's what I've been practicing intentionally the last 18 days, and that is what I got to practice this morning. Not perfection, but presence. Look, did you know that research shows that just 5 minutes of showing up fully and deliberately rewires our brains? Yeah. It's like consistent, deliberate focus, even for short periods of time like 5 minutes, can contribute to the brain rewiring through neuroplasticity. The brain adapts and strengthens connections, the synapses, through repetition and focused effort, which is the foundation of habit formation and skill development. So it's pretty important. It says, hey, I'm in the driver's seat today, and that builds self-trust, not just talk, but biology. So your prefrontal cortex strengthens, your nervous system calms, you start leading your life instead of reacting to it. So yeah, day 18 isn't flashy. It's not about some major breakthrough. It's about holding the line, winning just one choice at a time, even if that choice is just putting the phone down and going for a walk. That counts. So I started this stretch because I had moved away from responding into reacting, and I've come too far in my life, I've been given too much grace to live that way. So I want to live from intention, and it starts every morning, every moment, right here, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 1 day at a time. So let's go. How are you doing?
