Day 28: Delay caffeine

Tony Stark Policci explains why delaying caffeine 60-90 minutes after waking prevents afternoon crashes. Caffeine blocks adenosine without removing the sleep chemical itself, causing a rebound crash if you drink it too early. He stopped his afternoon slump by waiting to have coffee, and found short breaks like sun exposure work better than forcing focus when tired.

All right, so today is day 28 and I want to talk about delaying your caffeine intake. Now I know this one's going to kind of make some of you squirm, but listen, if your morning ritual looks like wake up, chug coffee, you're probably setting yourself up for like a mid-afternoon energy crash. So here's the science. I got this from listening to Andrew Huberman's podcast. When you wake up, your body is still clearing out a chemical called adenosine. So think of it as kind of sleep pressure. Now caffeine doesn't get rid of adenosine, it it just blocks the receptors that sense it, like, kind of like putting duct tape over your check engine light, right? So if you drink caffeine too early, you block the signal, but the pressure is still there waiting to rebound, and that's why this crash happens later. But if you wait like 60 to 90 minutes and let your body clear the adenosine naturally, then have your coffee, you'll have the alertness you want without the downside. You'll feel more stable, more focused, and you even sleep better at night. So it's not about giving up coffee, it's about timing it right so that it works for you, not against you. So, I've been delaying my cup of coffee for at least 90 minutes or longer since, I'm gonna say maybe day 20 or day 21. Now I can't honestly say that I've noticed any measurable difference in how I feel, except I haven't had a crash. In the afternoon, so I guess that's good. And also, one of the things that I did today was I just couldn't focus on my work around 10:30 this morning, so I decided to go sit in the sun for 30 minutes and just think. It was, I don't know, kind of a combination of meditation and thought, but it was good enough to just let me get refreshed. So I just sat out in the grass wearing only just shorts and letting the sunshine down on me. And like the heat and the power of the sun penetrating my skin was intense. You know, the temperature here in Arizona is still pretty tolerable, so being able to be out in the sun at 10:30 in the morning isn't brutal. But like after 30 minutes I was done. And even now, long before the temperatures hit 100 degrees, it can be tough to sit out in the sun for too long without having some water to jump in nearby here in Arizona. So It's evening now, the sun's down, and I guess the tip here is that sometimes instead of trying to grind through resistance when the brain is distracted or your level of competency just isn't there, take a short break. You know, go take a walk, sit in the sun, walk in the cold, do something else, and then get back to what you were doing. And that worked for me. So, alright, that's it. Thanks for watching, and I'll talk to you next time.
