He describes banks stopping lending and job losses, explains why many people turned to the Internet and digital marketing to make money, and recounts seeing his ads convert (people clicking his ads and buying), which motivated his subsequent actions.

Recession that was trying to make me cry. That's part of the story. Okay. That time, in my opinion, gave a lot of people a false sense of accomplishment. Kind of like the digital marketing world right now. Everybody thinks they're great, but we're going to see who's really good right now. During the time we're in today, banks stopped lending, jobs were gone, couldn't do loans, and you had to reinvent yourself. Which is why the digital marketing space is so great. Because the first thing people do is do what I did, go on the Internet and find a way to make more money. And I want to elaborate on this one part, because I watched the episode and I remember thinking this. When I stood up at that desk and I could see those ads and I knew that I was onto something. I saw it. I said, everyone is like me right now, hurting, searching for ways to make money on the Internet. What if I'm the guy that's put in the ads and they're clicking on my ad buying stuff and I'm making money? And that's why I was so driven and did some of the things that they're going to see in the next episode.
