A short spoken anecdote by Vince Reed describing a marketing tactic called the “invisible funnel”: customers pay a nominal $1 to enter and only pay a larger $100 at the end if satisfied. Reed reports that hundreds of people paid the $1 and most proceeded to take the $99 offer, demonstrating strong conversion in this example.

I saw a training, and there was a guy talking about this concept called the invisible funnel. Imagine that you got to eat at your favorite restaurant, and they said, you get to eat at this restaurant. Order whatever you want. You just have to pay $1 to be able to come in here and eat, and only if the food is great and you absolutely love it. You have to pay US$100 when you leave. So ultimately, that's what the invisible funnel was. And I was blown away. Not only did literally hundreds of people essentially pay the dollar, almost canceled. Everyone essentially went all the way through the process, allowed the $99 offer to take place, or essentially us to build them the $99, and we had all of these people essentially taking me up on this offer.
