The Conductor And The Sales Manager - Global Sales Mentor | Zach Selch

Zach Selch compares sales management to conducting an orchestra. A conductor knows each musician's strengths, assigns them the right part, and cues them at the right moment. A sales manager does the same with team members and the sales process.
I'm in New Orleans with my friend Matthew Bufus. Mr. Bufus is my kids' music teacher, but he's a conductor, and I've always been fascinated with conductors because of what they do, and we'll, we'll walk through that. Matt, can you tell us a little bit about what a conductor does?
Sure. So from a leadership perspective, first and foremost, it's It's really important to get to know all of your players on a personal level. What they do, what their strengths are, what their weaknesses are. The same goes for you to them. They need to get to know you so that they're inspired to play for you. We choose music that fits them the best, that's going to challenge them, that's going to bring out the strengths of the group. When we're on the podium, we organize the sounds that the composer has, has written, and so we are cueing them and Different spots and asking them to enter and play with strength or honor the music in different ways. And so we're the last person to hear them before the audience does. And so that's an important job.
Cool. Now, what does that remind you of? Doesn't that remind you a little bit about what we do as sales leaders working with a complex sales process, right? We're finding our team, we're identifying what everybody does, we're figuring out what part of the sales process Each individual should take, and then we're feeding them in at the right point to make sure that we get that sales process executed the right way. The right person is doing the right thing at the right time with our gentle direction and coaching and help so that we can close that deal, right? So there's a lot similar, in my opinion, to what a conductor does and what a sales manager does. And I've always found that when I watch People conducting. I've always made that connection in my head. I thought that was that was sort of correct. Does that sound about right? I agree.
