A yoga teacher explains why students should start at the front of the mat, not the middle, so they have room to move safely backward. She walks through a basic breath-linked sequence: inhale arms up, exhale fold forward, inhale lengthen, exhale plant hands, step back.

Never start your student in the middle of the mat. Why? When we start our student in the middle of the mat, they can't come back. There's no space for them to come back. So if she inhale, reaches her arms to the sky, exhale and folds forward, inhale, look up, lengthen. Now exhale, plant her hands. Where is she going to jump back to? Step back. Oh, do you want me to? Okay. Step back. You just made funny face. Instead, whenever we start someone in a new sequence, we'll ask them to come to the front of their mat. All the way to the front.
