How to Teach a Chakra Two Yoga Class

Learn to teach a second chakra yoga class focused on fluidity, creativity, and joy through flowing sequences, hip openers, and arm balances. The Svadhisthana chakra governs emotion and sexuality, so the class emphasizes movement, laughter, and consensual partner work rather than static holds. Use upbeat music like Pharrell's "Happy," wear orange, and keep the energy light.

Hey everybody, welcome to today's video. We're going to be talking about the second chakra and the yoga postures that go with it. So let's get into it. Okay, let's get started. So the Svadhisthana chakra is your second chakra. It deals with emotion, sexuality, movement. It deals with fluidity. It deals with our ability to move around in the world. It deals with our relationship with sexuality. It deals with our emotion. And people who have experienced sexual trauma in their childhood oftentimes have either an excess or a deficient second chakra. So the second chakra isn't just about sexuality, it's also about creativity. So if you feel stunted in creativity, oftentimes this has to do with the second chakra, and this can be very easily remedied through movement-based exercises or creative outlets like art and dance. So when I teach a class that has to do with second chakra, I teach a class that is much more flowy. So it's a lot less Iyengari and a lot more Shivaree. So, um, it has elements of dance and movement to it, and it has a lot of laughter, and it has a lot of fun. So when I'm teaching your, um, Virabhadrasana 1 to Virabhadrasana 2 to Exalted Warrior. This is all in breath pace. So inhale, exhale, inhale, right? So whereas in my first chakra class, I'm teaching your inhale, we're going to hold this for like 30 to 60 seconds, and we're just going to keep breathing in and out through the nose for a really long time. And that's the first chakra. It's like these long, stable holds. But the second chakra is like, yeah, movement. And even like, I might come into a second chakra, a Warrior 2, the Virabhadrasana 2, and I might just ask them to start flowing and moving through it. And I might ask them to get off of their mats and move and flow with other people. And again, I break this all down in my Million Dollar Yogi course. It's included in the course so that you can do 7 Chakra, the chakra journey, with your students. But, um, just to give you an idea of what kind of what I do, I give you the whole sequence in that course. But, but if you want to create something yourself, just do a lot of movement. And I play a lot of happy music. I even have that song Happy by Pharrell in the, the playlist that I play. But, um, I'm— it's all about movement and, and and being happy and joyous. Like, that's the essence of the second chakra. I mean, honestly, happiness and joyous is, is the essence of all of yoga. Like, I always tell people, I'm not selling fitness, I'm selling happiness. Like, that's at the end of the day. Like, y'all, it doesn't matter what we're doing, it just matters that we're happy. It doesn't matter where we— how we get there. Like, my conduit is yoga. That's how I reach people. But I'm really trying to help people be happy. Like, ultimately, that's all I want for all of you and for myself. I've traveled all over this planet, and happiness is like the thing that everybody wants. That's, that's what everybody's trying to achieve. So anyhow, I divert, but second chakra is all about movement. Some of the things that people who are having deficiency in their second second chakra are going to have some rigidity, and so they're going to have a hard time making those movements. So you're going to really want to bring them out and make the environment super fun. I oftentimes will tell people to just roll up their mats and throw them to the side, because if they have their mat and they can still go back to it, they might feel like, oh, I'm going to go back to my mat and I'm just gonna hide out there. Or some people get really finicky about their, their mat getting stepped on by other people. They don't want the energy of that, they don't want the dirtiness of that. And, you know, I kind of understand that. That's— that I'm not like that. I'm a dirty person. I don't really care. But I'm all like, I like to get hot and sweaty, let's do this, you know. But, but some, you know, I respect that some people are like that. So just roll up the mats, throw them to the side, get together energetically. If we do this on a Zoom, unfortunately, you know, or online, unfortunately, it's harder for us to get together in that way. Um, I even like people to touch each other and hold hands, and in Shavasana, puppy pile, like lay on top of each other and just really build that connection and that safe, positive touch with other people. I would say that my biggest fear about online yoga really has to do with the loss of touch. Because in the past 15+ years that I've been working with students, their biggest fear and the hardest thing to get people to do is to touch. People don't feel comfortable touching other people, and I think a lot of it has to do with trauma because most of us were sexually abused as children. I mean, like, almost all of us. It's, it's been very normalized, um, and so A lot of people don't feel comfortable with touch, or if they weren't sexually abused, they grew up— like my partner grew up in a home where there wasn't a lot of touch and it was a very authoritarian home. And so touch is something he's had to relearn how to do and to accept into his life. And, and touch is so important because we, we're all energetically connected. We are connected as human beings just on on a, on a scientific level, but spiritually and on a spiritual level, we're super connected. We're all part of, you know, I'm connected to the rocks outside, we're connected to the trees, we're, we're all a part of this ecosystem of the planet. And so when we lose that physical touch and connection, it can be damaging to our second chakra. And that's why your second chakra class needs to incorporate touch. It needs to incorporate connection. And, you know, maybe something, if you have an online class and you do have the ability, it's not pre-recorded, say, and you do have the ability to have people live and connecting, then you have people come up. Maybe you ask people, you know, you can mute them and you can ask them to repeat affirmations to you through the camera. You know, one thing I really love to have people do is the I love you. It's where they look in a mirror and they say, I love you. I love you. Like looking at yourself in a mirror. This is super powerful for people. Because oftentimes we have never told ourselves that we love ourselves. Like oftentimes we've never said, "I love you," to yourself. You maybe you said it to other people, but I think we can all agree that we can't love others until we love ourselves. And this, this is really, this is really focused in the fourth chakra, but it starts in the second chakra, which is in our sacral area. So in our hips and in our— just below our belly button where all of our reproductive organs are, this is where your second chakra is. So also, like, once you move to the floor after you've done your standing movement postures, once you move to the floor, go deep into the hip openers. So in my second chakra classes, I do a lot of really long pigeons Eka Pada. I do a lot of really long— like, if they can't do that, I maybe do like the dead pigeon, you know, where they lay on their back. If you don't know what that is, just Google it. And, you know, or DuckDuckGo these days. Yeah, but just those deep hip openers, even in your standing sequence, or as you're moving from your standing to your floor, you can do like your lizard pose. You can do you know, like arm balances that have to do with hip opening, that kind of thing, um, Titthibakasana, you know, even if you just get them like partially there, they're gonna feel a win and they're gonna laugh and have fun. Make it light, don't make it serious. Be really, really, really careful to make your second chakra class light. Oh, and by the way, The color of the second chakra is orange, just in case I did not say that earlier. So wear orange. I'm sure I didn't say that. Anyhow, thank you so much for watching.
