Yoga for All Bodies

Dandasana (staff pose) prepares your body for jump-backs. Hand placement and hip lift matter more than achieving the full pose, and a yoga block can help you get there.

Who am I to crush your dreams? When we're in Dandasana, this is a preparatory posture for another posture, for your jump backs. And a lot of times when we're teaching yoga these days, people don't talk about preparatory poses or how poses build on each other. And honestly, every pose builds on itself to the next pose. We want to take our hands and instead of having them back here, we want to move them forward. And the reason why is because in Dandasana, we are working and building the strength in this pose to push the hips up. That's something that you're never going to be able to do and leverage your body when you're back here, right? Because now, how am I going to be able to bring my hips back? If it helps, you can work with a block by bringing the block next to you and pressing up. This allows us to start to work on getting those hips up so we can bring them back. We don't have to get to the apex of a posture to enjoy the benefits of good alignment.
