A short interview excerpt (uploaded by Bill Brown) arguing that home service companies (lawn care, pool maintenance, HVAC, roofing, etc.) must develop a formal C-suite and management team to scale. The speaker lists essential roles — CEO, CFO, head of marketing, head of sales, and COO — and notes that the readiness threshold (including technology capabilities) for growing to the next level is higher today than in the past.
Our listeners don't know what they don't know. But you're, you're in this system day in and day out. What are you finding is the most surprising thing that owners come across when they begin this process, or what should they really consider before they undertake this?
You can't just simply be a lawn care company or a pool maintenance company, or an H VAC player or roofing player. You actually have to have a developed C suite. So you need a real management team. It can't just be the entrepreneur who kind of does everything. You're the one who's in charge of sales. You're the one who's in charge of being the visionary and setting the strategic direction. You're the one that reviews the numbers. You need to have a well developed management team, CEO, a cfo, someone who's a head of marketing who can help drive leads, someone who's ahead of sales, who can help you convert better once you generate those leads, a COO to kind of keep the trains running on time, make sure operationally everything is in order. All these things have to be in place. Not necessarily five years ago, but definitely today. The threshold for being ready to go to the next level is way higher than it used to be. I would say technology is part of that too.
