A short interview-style discussion about what owner-operators in home services should expect when selling or partnering with private equity. Key points: private equity involvement has become more sophisticated, buyers expect a developed management team and technology/financial systems (ERP like ServiceTitan), and sellers should view private equity as collaborative rather than adversarial.
So sticking again to the owners, owner operators who are looking to sell, looking to partner, what are you finding is the most surprising thing that owners come across when they begin this process, or what should they really consider before they undertake this?
Today there are a lot of private equity backed companies across home services, a lot of them. So it's gotten way more sophisticated. You actually have to have a developed C suite, so you need a real management team. It can't just be the entrepreneur who kind of does everything. I would say technology is part of that too. You have to have a financial system, you have to have some kind of an erp. Again, service titan is one we see most often in our world. The other thing that I think about, people are so afraid of private equity and partnering with that community. They want to collaborate. Approach it as if these people want to be your partner and they want to grow this with you. And not that they're like an adversary who wants to go fire all your people. It's not like that.
