A cowboy explains the hip turn, a cattle-handling technique where the rider positions the horse on the cow's hip to guide it in circles. It's simpler than a head turn, keeps the cow calm, and prevents it from bolting or escaping through gates.
Chapters
Rather than going straight to the head to turn a cow, it's a lot easier to just take and use the hip turn where you get on the hip with your horse bent a little bit and just ease around the cow, and it'll basically follow you around in a circle. This prevents them from speeding up And not going out of gate. And it takes off enough stress where they'll start to act as a herd mate and want to go to the other cattle. Once you get the cow turned to the direction you want, face your horse up to it and back off. If you're trying to train your cattle to be a herd, just ride off and leave it, and it'll eventually walk out on its own to catch up with the rest of the cattle.
