A rancher demonstrates how to move cattle away from water by starting from the front of the herd. After about a week of practice, cattle learn to follow this pattern on their own. The key is positioning ahead of the animals and using precise hip-point maneuvers to guide them to new grazing areas.

Okay, I just rode down here to get close enough to these. The cattle came in and they balled up where there's a leak, so a few of them get a drink but not enough, and they started themselves out. And as you can see, these cattle on the back aren't going anyplace until the ones in the front Get far enough out in front. Almost just like traffic. This is how cattle, when they're on their own and they go someplace, this is the way that they start out, is they all just go in the one direction, starting at the front leaves, cattle at the back are the last ones to leave. A natural start. And that's when you're picking cattle up off of water on an IMG program. You want to start them just like this, where that front end goes and then they gradually string on out and go to where they're going to graze. And after about a week, if you can get your timing down right, they'll kind of start doing this on their own. You approach them and ask a couple of them to go by you, and then you can just sit back and wait. And they just gradually wait, sit there, string out. And you might have to give the, the ones at the back a little bit of a push because They're wanting to hang around water a little bit longer, but these cattle are all stringing out heading to the water that we're wanting them to go to. Timing's still a little late, but at least it's closer than it was. I'm wanting to take these cattle right here And move them on down to this mountain and this bigger group of cattle over that way. And I'm going to do it— start them from the direction I want them to go. I'm going to kind of ignore those cattle way out there. I'm going to slip up here where this cattle will turn her upper hip. Not even going to worry about that cow because she's going to turn around and come anyway. Come back in. The thing you do to get these cattle to go by around you without getting in back of them. That's starting them from the front.
