How To Create Your PTSD Recovery “Road Map”? – PTSD Recovery Workshop: PTSD TV Episode #16
6 Feb 2019 · 30 min
In this episode of PTSD TV, hosts Kayleen (a PTSD/CPTSD recovery coach) and Brad Schipke (her partner and fellow survivor) walk listeners through a three‑part framework for building a personal PTSD recovery roadmap. They begin by urging listeners to confront their current reality, quantifying symptom frequency (e.g., days per week of insomnia, flashbacks, anger) and estimating the percentage of daily life consumed by PTSD. Next, they examine the "current steps" people are taking, emphasizing the difference between coping activities (yoga, breathing, distraction, substance use) and true healing actions that move the person toward recovery. The third pillar is the "ideal situation," where listeners set clear, measurable goals—zero PTSD days, 0% time occupied, specific relationship or work targets—visualizing the future to create motivation. Throughout, the hosts stress the need for a mindset shift from self‑criticism to self‑compassion, the importance of taking concrete action, and the role of personal responsibility in changing habits and thoughts. They conclude with practical resources: one‑on‑one consultations, a free online training (overcomingptsd.info/go), and ongoing podcast episodes that blend supportive encouragement with tough love. The episode’s purpose is to give listeners a structured, actionable plan to move from a painful present to a healed future.

Hey everyone, welcome to PTSD TV. Today is our PTSD recovery workshop. So today's Wednesday, today is when we're doing the recovery workshop. So we're really excited this morning. We're going to be talking about how to create your PTSD recovery roadmap. So this is going to be an awesome episode. It's a little bit of tough love in this episode, but kind of before we get started, for those of you who don't know kind of who we are and who I am and what I do, And before we even jump into that, this episode of PTSD TV is sponsored by my Broken to Unbreakable program, which is my PTSD and CPTSD recovery program. So that's kind of what I do. I walk people through their PTSD and CPTSD recovery, and a huge part is, you know, creating that roadmap. So today is a huge piece of it. So I'm really excited to kind of share all this with you and just kind of dive in and, and, and see how it turns out. So For those of you who don't know, my name is Keenleen. I had PTSD, CPTSD, for over 15 years and now no longer do. And this lovely man to my right here is Brad Schipke, and I'm very excited to be here. And he also had PTSD and he went through everything, all, all the pieces of kind of my journey with me and all the pain, and he was there for it. And so tomorrow on Thursdays we do PTSD and relationships, so we do a podcast on that and And that's a great episode because you kind of get to see both sides and what it did to our relationship and how to prevent, you know, kind of the pain that we went through in our relationship. Because we know that's such a big piece for those of you who are in relationships or even relationships with family and friends and stuff like that. So yeah.
Affects every part.
Every part. Okay, so today, how to create your PTSD recovery mode roadmap. We're gonna talk about 3 things. So there's kind of 3 pieces to this. Number one, your current situation. Number two, current steps. And number three, ideal situation. So something we kind of keep talking about this week, um, is growth, right? And PTSD and growth and healing. And that was kind of our theme all week. And, and this is a big piece and something we talked about yesterday when we reviewed, um, Dr. David Griffin's book, which was called PTSD to PTG. We talked about, you know, his last kind of piece is called Finding Your Mission. And so we're like, what? You know, that sounds similar to what, you know, you do with clients. That's what kind of the conversation that we had.
Yeah.
Well, okay, so why don't I share kind of that piece, right? He found it was very important in his journey. And I know you all are looking for some, some kind of stuff to do, some actions to take. So that's why we're doing the workshop, so you can take action ultimately at the end, because without action nothing's gonna happen.
Nothing gonna happen. So yeah, this episode's gonna be a huge shift for you guys because we're kind of— we're kind of gonna— most of the time we just want to kind of ignore our problems or avoid our problems, not even look at them. Like if you have like a— if you have a lot of debt in your bank account, it's like you never— you never even open up your app on your phone because you don't even want to see it. And that's kind of what people do with like their entire lives. And that's what we did. And that's what I mean, I did that for the longest time. So like what we're gonna do is like we're gonna really kind of crystallize Where you are right now, it's not to make you feel bad, just to kind of preface that. It's to— you have to look at the dark side, right? You have to look at where you are right now so you can figure out what things you need to work on and things you need to change. So this thing, this episode is really going to help you crystallize that so we can start to develop a plan to get you to your ideal situation. And we're going to define that really, really well today as well.
Right. And so we're going to talk about how that affected each of us, right? So kind of number one, just jump right in here. Number one, current situation. So, you know, when, when I'm, you know, talking with people and kind of trying to figure out where they're at and where they want to go, right, that's the whole process. Everyone's a little bit different. Um, but for us, so current situation, some questions you want to ask yourself, you know, like how many days out of the week do you have trouble sleeping? How many days out of the week are you avoiding activities or situations? How many days out of the week are you you know, having angry outbursts or fights with loved ones? How many days of the week do you feel anxious or overwhelmed with stress? So these are all questions to kind of see like, okay, what, what is my current situation?
Yeah, what thoughts are running through your head that you can't control, you know?
Right. How often is this happening?
How long are you sleeping, right? There's, there's apps where you can track how long you're sleeping. We do that, right? Yeah, sleep, everything, you know. What are your eating habits? Everything, right down to every little thing, every part of your life. You kind of want to be like, okay, this is where I'm at. You want to get that foundation, that baseline, so you can start improving and creating plans.
So once you kind of know your current situation, and so specifically for PTSD, so let's say, you know, when I was struggling, it was okay. I was having trouble sleeping 7 out of 7 days a week, right? I was having, you know, flashbacks and nightmares 7 out of 7 days a week. I was having angry outbursts 7 out of 7 days a week. They'll say, um, you know, I felt anxious 7 out of 7 days. I don't know if I could pick something that wasn't 7 out of 7 days, but, uh, let's say I was overwhelmed with stress 6 out of 7 days. It's probably 7, but, um, so you kind of get the idea there. So really put some value on it, some, some numbers, so you can have kind of your, your first, your beginning, your current, and then, you know, when you begin to make that transformation— and this is important to set goals too— you have those numbers to like reflect on. Okay, it was seven. Now it's six. Dang, that's pretty good. Okay, so so really important to get those numbers. And then something I always ask people, right, is like what percentage of your time is being taken by your PTSD? And this is something we did a a time study when when I was still struggling and I was kind of at my low and. You were doing a time study for something else, for something career-related, career-related. And, and he kind of— he brought me in on it and he was like, wow, look at how, how many minutes in a day I'm doing this and this and this. And then we kind of did it with the PTSD and it was like, yeah, oh my gosh, like, that's taking up 90% of your time. Like, yeah, yeah, that's a lot, right? So I always ask people to kind of put a number on that.
Mm-hmm.
You know, how much of your time is it taking out? And the other thing we say, right, if it's 1% of the time or 90% of the time, it's still an issue, right? But I think that, you know, that's really important to put a number on it.
Yeah, it is. It's super important because you, you need that. You need that baseline. And, um, you, you— everybody's, like she said, 1% or 100%. Your North Star, your goal, your target needs to be full recovery 0% of the time. 0% of the time. And that's so important.
Right. So once you have those numbers in your current situation, that leads to the second part, right? Which is current steps, right? So, you know, I'm not sleeping 7 out of 7 days a week. I feel overwhelmed with stress 7 out of 7 days a week. I'm fighting with my loved ones 7 out of 7 days a week. Now, what am I doing to help myself get better? And like, when you, when you see all that pain, right, which is hard, that's Sometimes those are hard questions for people to answer. You see all that pain, you see how much it's affecting you. It's affecting 90% of my time. Okay, what are you currently doing to help yourself get better? And a lot of times the answer I hear over and over again are a lot of coping skills, right?
Mm-hmm.
So I don't hear a lot of people healing, right? Which is really sad. So a lot of people say, okay, so, um, I'm doing yoga once a week, and I do a breathing exercise, and I play a sport once a week, right? Something like that, right? Which are all kind of have their place in the healing process, but they're not actual healing, right? They're coping. And then a lot of people on top of that, right, on that kind of negative side of what are you doing to try to help yourself get better, a lot of like substance abuse.
Mm-hmm.
And things like that.
Yeah, a lot of people, like, they, they say that distractions are ways that they, they cope with things. And like, they, they drink or they eat or they, you know, they play video games or watch TV. But you'll hear us say this, we've been saying this the entire time, it's like, when you— like, distraction from like your symptoms isn't necessarily bad, but when you want to focus that into something good like reading, that's our best ones. So you want to find like a positive, um, distraction in those moments where you feel like you need it. But it's, it's, it's really important to, to— like, you might be hearing what Kayleen's saying and being like, okay, why are you having us look at this? You know, like, why are you making us like define all the pain that we're going through right now?
Mm-hmm.
But like, that's your reality, right? You have to look at where you are right now. And like she said before, Like a month from now, 2 months from now, when you go from 7 days down to 6 days down to 5 days, you know, because when you, when you make the transition from 7 to 6 days, it doesn't feel a whole lot different. You're still like, you're still losing the majority of your time to PTSD, but you take a little step. But you wouldn't know that you take a little step unless you know where you are right now. So like, even like a year, like even today, like we're like, oh my god, look how far we've come. Yeah, because we defined where we were. Yeah, we just said that yesterday, and that's super important for— like, it's a positive thing. It's a good thing to look at the, the, um, the things that— like, your, your current reality, right? And ignoring it, like, is not going to do anything. Am I right?
Like, no, you're totally right.
Ignoring the problem isn't going to do anything.
And, you know, people have hard times, um, answering these questions. And I, I think you say it best when you say, like, we're here to give you a hug, right, and kick you in the butt at the same time. And some of this stuff is really hard to hear. And, you know, when you're going to define that current situation You know, you want to look at all aspects. Like, how's my relationship with my kids? How's my relationship with my spouse? You know, am I on my fifth marriage? You know, have I been divorced five times? And like, and am I just destroying things basically, right? You know, do I have a relationship with my kids? Do I have a relationship with myself? What does my career look like? What do my finances look like? All of those have a lot of pain attached, but. If you can define those and say, okay, my current relationship with my wife is we spend, you know, one day together a month. That's like good. We go to the movies, we have dinner, and it's like, it's fun.
Mm-hmm.
And then the rest of the days are all iffy and fighting and stressed, and we love each other, but it's really hard. Okay, and so then once you can put like numbers on that and okay, it's taking up 90% of my time and 7 out of 7 days a week I'm anxious. then you can start to grow, right? And then ask yourself what you're doing to get better. So you're showing up here. That's awesome.
Yeah.
Okay, but also you need to be working on healing, right? So if you're struggling with PTSD, and we'll talk about this a little bit later in our kind of final words, you know, what I do is I run a program to help people recover from PTSD and CPTSD and kind of go through that journey of getting from their current situation to their ideal situation. So, and I think that kind of leads us into our ideal situation, right? Which is one of my favorite parts to think about, right? A lot of people think that they're, you know, broken, or that there's no path to healing, or that coping is the way to heal. Which is why, you know, in the current steps section, that, you know, oh, okay, I'm doing yoga once a week and some breathing exercises, and I'm self-medicating, right?
Mm-hmm.
That's all coping. And coping, you know, it definitely has its place, but is not the path to healing. So a lot of people feel like they're, you know, they're broken and they're kind of gonna feel like this forever, or at least like some of this forever. And so when we go to define that ideal situation, it's important to remember that it's possible to make a full recovery from PTSD and CPTSD. You know, it's possible to have no stress in your relationships and essentially no stress in your life. It's, it's possible to, you know, follow your dreams and achieve your goals. It's possible to have the, the health that you want, right? So every single area is absolutely possible. So you look at your current situation, what you're doing, and then define those goals.
Yeah, yeah. The cool thing, the cool thing about, um, the ideal situation, or the cool thing just about having PTSD in general, is that like you're gonna go through this really, really, really hard journey and your, your awareness is gonna grow beyond anything your mind— the power of your mind and like everything, your willpower, everything's gonna grow and get stronger and stronger and stronger, and you're just gonna be able to go so much farther. So like right now, your ideal situation is gonna be, you know, like life without PTSD.
Mm-hmm.
Which is like, you know, I'm complete— like, and like she said, it's completely possible to be like, like we're completely at ease. We were at a point where we said this before, that we weren't even in the same house, in the same bed. We started in the same bed and Right, sleeping together. But then things got so bad that we couldn't even be in the same house together. And now we've come back to a point where we feel completely calm. Like, I couldn't be near her without my heart like racing out of my chest, and now I can hold her every night. And that's like a really special thing. And like, that's what you kind of want to— like, the whole goal of this is to You know, realize that your current situation right now is unacceptable, right? You don't that you don't want to live in this pain anymore, and to realize that you can live at this ideal situation and really define it and really like make it clear and crystallize it and like imagine it in your mind. And that's something that Keeling does all the time. Is like she's like amazing at visualizing things. She's a master visualizer, but like really. like really getting those really clear because, you know, we want it. We want to harness the power of pain and the power of pleasure and the power of that future desire that you want because those are things that you can completely control. But so often we just want to ignore them and ignore the pain and just we don't even believe that that future desire is even possible. And the reality is, is that they are.
Yeah.
And that you need to, you need to harness those powers because they're huge powers. They're huge motivating powers and factors in your life, and most people just ignore them or like push them down. And like, you don't look at your pain to beat yourself up. That's a huge, huge thing to understand. You don't— like, the reality is, is that this is your reality. Like, there's nothing sad about it.
Mm-hmm.
There's nothing like to beat yourself up. There's nothing to feel guilty about. It's like, all right, like, okay, this happened. Like, this is where I am. This is what I have to deal with right now, right? This is where I have to start. And I can't start anywhere else than I am right now. I can't start in some other alternate universe or alternate reality. It's just impossible. It's like I have to start in my current reality. I have to define that current reality and really crystallize where I want to go. And that is like a huge motivating factor for us. And that's— this stuff is exactly what we did for us.
Yeah.
And we continue to do this to continue to make sure that we're continually growing. Like, we're like, okay, this is who we are right now. This is who we want to be. How do we get there? Right? So it's not like you're— it's not like you just use this for PTSD recovery. It's for every step of your life, you know, because like you never want to set your potential— like you never want to limit your potential because there's— there is no limit on your potential. Like, let me ask you, like, what is— what is like the best you can achieve in life? Right? And if you could pick, would you pick that? Like, well, let's say like monetary terms because that's easy.
Right.
Um, let's say like if you, if you could earn it, like what if you could define your potential? Would you define it at $100 grand per year? Would you define it at, you know, a billion dollars per year? You know, like what's your potential? And like no one really knows. You don't even know what your potential is. You don't even know what the potential for your life is. And you know, at this point we know more than you about PTSD recovery and like you need to believe in us and like our path and the pain that we went through and And trust us that you can get to this point where you can be happy and calm. Because like we were there in your spot and no one was telling us that it is possible to get to this ideal situation. It's like, okay, this is where we want to go, but that would just cause us even more pain because we didn't believe it was possible. And that's what most people do, right? Like they, they define their current situation an ideal situation, but then they don't really believe or don't know how to get to their ideal situation. So they just like mull in their pain even more, and it makes it even like— it hurts them even more. So like, we want to be here to tell you that you can get to that situation, that you can define whatever you want to define and really get there. And we want to help you get there. We want to give you the tools to get there, and it's 100% possible to get there.
That's awesome. Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah.
And I think, you know, when we go to define the ideal situation, just like we did with the current situation, you know, put numbers on it, you know. What's your ideal situation? You know, for me it was like, I want to sleep through the night every night, right?
Yeah, she wrote that down as a goal.
That was written down, right? So how do I know when I get there, right? Well, okay, I sleep through the night every night, right? It's pretty easy. There's a, there's a numerical value on it, which is 7 out of 7 nights I sleep through the night, right? Instead of 7 out of 7 nights I have nightmares and flashbacks, right? Right.
So, and there was a point where that seemed absolutely impossible, but she was still writing it down. Pretty much every day.
And that's really important, right, to have that ideal situation. So, you know, if you're feeling stressed and anxious in your current situation 6 out of 7 days a week, make your goal 0 out of 7 days a week. Yeah, right.
Yeah.
Um, and that's really important. And if you feel like, you know, in, in different areas of your life, right, if you feel like your relationship is struggling and you only have one good date night or whatever, right, a month, you know, make that goal, I want to have One good date night a week, right? Or 2 a week, or 2 amazing date nights a week, right? So like, make sure to put those numbers back in that ideal situation. So take the same numbers from your current situation and put them in your ideal situation. You know, if your PTSD, like it was for me, is taking up 90% of your time, what do you want that to look like in your ideal situation? And I'm gonna tell you right now, that number should be zero.
Yeah.
Right. So that is really important to take those numbers and transfer them over and really know that, like Brad said, it is possible. We've been there. It seems, or it seemed for us, absolutely impossible.
Yeah. No one was telling us.
I mean, we didn't have these references, but it is absolutely possible. We've done it. We're here for you. We believe in you. Um, we've got your back and that's why we do this, right? Because it is absolutely possible. There's hope. There's a way to healing, and it's possible.
Yeah. And some of you guys might be asking why you keep talking about all this this stuff, and why aren't you teaching us like you know like practical like hands-on like tools and coping skills and stuff like that? It's because like we do this very intentionally. Like this these things that we're talking about, like they're the most important things. These are the things that like are going to change your life and the way that you think and the way that you act and react in your life and the way that you face your problems. Because like, like we say this all the time, everybody's different, right? You're gonna be going through different things, and like to explain every single step for you right now is going to be very, very difficult. So we're basically giving you the foundation that you need and the base that you need to face any problem that you face in your recovery journey so you can get around it, so you can get beyond it. Because like the reality is like if you know that, if you have this foundation, of like getting around problems. And this is what we talked about on Monday. So if you missed that, go back and watch that because that is like incredible. But these are the foundational ways that you need to be thinking, because if you, if you can think this way, you're gonna be able to find a path around any problem that you have. You're gonna be able to find any solution to any problem, not just PTSD, but in any problem in life.
Right.
And that is more important. We want to teach you like, it's the whole like, you can teach a man, or you can give a man a fish or teach him how to, teach him how to fish for life, whatever. But, um, like we want to teach you how to fish so you don't go hungry for the rest of your life, man. We want to help. Like, we could give you a skill and it like helps you today, but we want to teach you the foundational ways of thinking that will ensure that you get to your goal. So like, that's the whole reason. Like, none of this is like— should be taken lightly because it's like, it's super, super important.
Yeah.
And like, these, these are things that we did and these are the things that really changed our life. Because like, the things that change in your mind, like if you, if you can change the way you think, you're gonna change the way you act. And if you change the way you act, you're gonna change your results that you get in life. So it really— every single thing starts in your mind, and that's where we start, and that's what we're doing here is giving you that foundation. So all this stuff is super important.
Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure. That's a good point. And so that kind of leads into, right, like action, action, action, action, action on everything, everything, right? Nothing we say will work if you don't take action on it, right?
Mental action too.
Yep, action comes in a lot of different forms. And today, right, the action is You know, when you're done, or right now, right? Or maybe even listen again and kind of go through the questions that we talked about. Define your current situation, identify the steps you're currently taking, and define your ideal situation.
Mm-hmm.
So current situation, you know, how— what percentage of my life is being taken up by my PTSD? How many days am I having trouble sleeping, anxious, angry outbursts, things like that? What am I currently doing to try to get better? Right. Breathing exercises, yoga, meditation. You know, what is it? And then is that healing? Right. And then ideal situation, you know, what do I want this to look like? Okay. I want zero PTSD, 0% of the time. I want a better relationship with my wife. If I didn't have PTSD, what would my life look like? I'd be able to show up to work on time. I'd be able to sleep through the night. I'd be able to be a better wife to my husband, better husband to my wife, better wife to my wife, better husband to my husband, better partner, right? I'd be able to be a better parent, a better sibling, right? So think about that, really visualize those, and then ask yourself, are those current steps going to get you from your current situation to your ideal situation?
Mm-hmm.
And then more often than not, they are not, right? Because they are coping skills in that, that second step, those current steps. So just—
and that's the reason why you're where you are, where you are right now, and not getting better actively and not improving very quickly and kind of stuck.
And you've probably been stuck that way for a number of years, as I know we were.
Yeah. Um, so yeah, you have to realize that the person that you are right now is not going to be the person who can get you to your ideal situation. Like, you are going to have to change. You're going to have to do something different. You're going to have to think differently. Like you're gonna have to, you're gonna have to change, and change is good. Like the actions that you are currently taking, if they were the right actions, they would have gotten you there. And that, that, that's kind of a sobering thought. That is sobering words.
Yeah.
If like the person that you are right now and the actions that you're taking right now could get you to full recovery, you'd be at full recovery, right? Or at least you'd be getting that momentum and making progress towards full recovery, right? But like the reality is, is that If you feel like you're stuck, if you feel like you're like in this like constant cycle that you can't break out of, it means that like you're doing something wrong. You're doing something like what you're doing is wrong and you need to change, right? And like Kayleen said, like this is kind of like some tough love moments, but like you're going to need to change, right? The responsibility is on your shoulders to change. Only you can change your actions. Only you can change your thoughts. And it's like the person you are right now will not achieve that ideal situation. You need to change. But I'm gonna end that on a positive note because everybody is capable of changing and making that transformation. Every single person, right? But it's up to you. It's up to you to make that change, to change your actions, to change your habits, to change your inputs, to change the way you're thinking, and to control all that to get to where you want to be.
Yeah, that's really important. And don't beat yourself up.
And don't beat yourself up. No, no, that's the, that's the overarching thing. It's like you just always treat yourself with love and acceptance and never ever beat yourself up, you know. If that's ever happening, then you just want to like switch it to a more positive thought. There's some more advanced strategies that we, we teach and go through, but that's a very simple one. Just kind of switch the thought to a more positive one to, um, To, uh, help yourself not beat yourself up. Yeah, yeah, because you don't deserve that. No one deserves that. And just think about like, how would you— what would you tell somebody else that you loved, right? And if you don't love anybody, you probably love a dog or something. So what would you— what would you say to your dog if they were feeling the same thing?
It'd be a lot kinder than what you're telling yourself, unless you're a cat person.
And if you— yeah, if you'd say the same things to other people, I don't know, or your dog, I don't know what to say.
Okay, so, okay, so some final words before we go, right? So that was kind of some tough love in this episode, but, um, you know, it's a really important piece.
We're going to tell you what you need to hear.
So make sure that you do that, right? Define the current situation, ask yourself what your current steps are, ask yourself what you want your ideal situation to be, and are those current steps going to get you there? And if not, right? Okay, like I told you at the beginning of the episode, I am a PTSD and CPTSD recovery coach, right? So I coach people through their recovery. If you, or you feel like a loved one, you know, needs more help with this and needs more guidance with this, reach out to me. I'm gonna be doing one-on-one consultations this upcoming weekend, and this will be the last weekend for a while, um, that I'm gonna be doing that. But we've had kind of so much fun over the past couple weeks that we're gonna keep doing them. So reach out. I can, um, set up a consultation this weekend with you one-on-one to talk about, um, you know, your recovery goals and, you know, where and what areas more specific to you that you're struggling and how to kind of reach those recovery goals.
Mm-hmm.
Or I'm also running a free training online right now. So, um, you know, how to heal and a little bit about what we talked about today, actually, how to heal if you've suffered for decades, if you feel kind of hopeless, um, and, you know, how it's affecting all areas of your life and a little bit about my journey, nothing detailed, just about my journey and how kind of we ended up here. So if you want to see that training, that's an awesome training.
Yeah.
You can see that at overcomingptsd.info/go. So that's overcomingptsd.info/go and it's a great training, just takes a little bit of your time, right? We always say skip a movie, skip a couple episodes of Netflix this week, You know, if your current steps aren't aligned, they're not going to get you to your ideal. Like Brad's saying, like, you need to become a new person, right? So if the current steps you're taking aren't helping you actively heal and actively get better, and you're not seeing changes in your life, make one of your current steps from now on, right, showing up to this. This is awesome, right? Show up to that training. That's going to change your mind, right? That's going to change your mindset. And at the end of the training, I talk about the, the program that I run. I keep like pointing at the map. I know you can't see the map, but I have a map pinned with clients that I have all over the world, and it's the most amazing thing to see. But I talk about the program that I run, and I don't know, I lost my train of thought.
Yeah, no, it's super important to, like she says, take action, right? Action will give you everything that you want in life, and it starts again with your mindset and learning. And learning everything you can. So if you like, if you got value out of this episode, we work really hard to give as much value as possible in every single episode.
