Hey everyone, welcome to PTSD TV. Today is Monday, it is our Monday motivation episode, and today we are talking about how to generate energy from thin air. So this episode of PTSD TV is sponsored by Broken to Unbreakable, which is my PTSD and CPTSD recovery program. So if you want to learn about that, you can go to overcomingptsd.info/go.
Mm-hmm.
You can go to overcomingptsd.info/go. And for those of you who don't know me, my name's Kayleen. I am a recovery coach. I had CPTSD for more than 15 years and now no longer do. And this lovely man to my right here is Brad Schipke.
I am lucky enough to be Kayleen's significant other, and I was there through every step of her recovery journey and also recovered myself. And I'm very excited. Monday Motivation is my favorite episode.
One of mine too.
Of the series that we do. And this is a really great one too.
This is a great one. So we're talking about how to generate energy from thin air. Now I have a definite— a definition of energy. I need, I need some of this as we get going here.
Need some every morning.
Um, that I like to use. Last week we were talking a bit about, you know, uh, the Depression Masterclass. I, I mentioned that a few times. So this is, um, part of the Depression Masterclass training that I do. So if you've ever seen it, whether sometimes I do it for the Mighty or, um, if, if you coach with me, you've seen it in the program hopefully. Um, but this is the definition of energy I use. It's a beautiful definition and it's really, really important that we define it because we need to first of all know what it is. before we can kind of move forward. So we're going to talk about what energy is, why creating energy is important, and important to your recovery journey, like why this even matters, right? And then of course how to create energy. And as always, at the end of the day today, at the end of the episode today, we're going to give you an action because recovery is action-based, right? And action leads to results. And for those of you joining us maybe for the first time, I think something I want to say and sometimes forget to say is, you know, if whether you're listening for yourself or for a loved one, whatever it is, it's possible to overcome PTSD or CPTSD, you know, no matter kind of the circumstances surrounding it. And, you know, we do this podcast to, you know, to of course give you help and things that you can take action on, 'cause recovery is action-based, but to remind you and to tell you maybe for the first time that it is possible to do this. You can heal. There is a path to healing, and you will get there, right? If you continue to take action, if you take the right steps, and you'll hear us talk about different trainings that you can listen to watch, you can heal from this. So no matter the circumstance, we want you to know that it is possible. And that's our ultimate goal here, is to spread the belief and let you know that it's possible.
100% possible. And that is one of the biggest things, the biggest keys to generating energy, at least it was for me as well, was knowing and having that belief that there is something after this. Because if you don't believe that there's something after all this pain and all this suffering, then It's gonna be very, very hard to generate that energy. So we always like to start with that. It is 100% possible no matter what you've been through. You know, thousands, hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people have done it around the world and have gone through the most horrible things and have come out the other side to do amazing things. And we want to spread that message, and we know that you can do it.
So without further ado, what is energy? I'll answer it. So like I said, for those of you who can see us or watching on YouTube, I have the little definition here. But energy is the capacity or power to do work, such as move an object by the application of force. So I'm going to read it again. Energy is the capacity or power to do work, such as move an object by the application of force. And I have some words underlined here, and I want to kind of point them out to you. So energy— I'm going to read it again—
Mm-hmm.
Is the capacity or power to do work, such as move an object. Now, move an object, in this case, we are the object. Move an object by the application of force. Now that's a really, really important part of this definition, right? By the application of force. So energy, the capacity or power to do work, right? To do something such as move an object.
Mm-hmm.
Like yourself, by the application of force. So that means at the very beginning to create energy, you need to apply force. And that's kind of what we're gonna be talking about today. And this can be, you know, kind of like a tricky subject to explain to people or to tell to people, but this is really, really important. By the application of force.
Yeah. And also another keyword is capacity. And every one of us has the capacity to do work by the application of force. That means that everybody has the capacity, has the capability of creating energy at any time Anywhere, anytime, always. So you always, no matter where you are, you have the capacity to do work by the application of force. Even if you don't want to do that work, you can do that work and you can create that energy. And that's what this is all about, is like creating that energy when you don't feel like it. And we all have that power within us. We just don't like to admit it and we don't like to use it because it's challenging from time to time.
To be straightforward, it kind of sucks sometimes, right?
It kind of sucks. Kind of sucks almost. when you're in the middle of it every day, sometimes it sucks. It feels like it sucks every minute of every day. Um, but you always have to remember that you have the capacity, you have the capability within yourself to create and to generate as much energy as you choose to generate. And, you know, when we were going through it, we didn't feel at all like generating energy. And a lot of days we didn't. And like, those days really sucked. But those days that we made the choice to actually go out there and create this energy, it created a whole new world for us and a whole new day and a whole new experience. And after a while, we learned that we could turn around a bad day in, you know, at first it was like hours. Oh, at first it was like weeks, right? So like a bad day or a bad thing would turn into like weeks of pain, and then it would be like a day or a few days, and then a day, and then a few hours. And now we've gotten it down and it's like, boom, it doesn't even come up. So like, You have the capability to make that choice, to make the change, and over time you will be able to create that habit. You'll build this capability up more and more and more in time. So the more and more you use your capability to create energy, it'll become easier and easier, but it's not supposed to be easy in the beginning.
Right, and I think that's important, right, what you said. Like, it's like we used this expression last week, right? You're— it's like pushing a boulder. Right? It takes a lot of work in the beginning, but then you get the momentum and it gets easier and easier and easier, right? So what Brad was saying was like, this was challenging at first, but then you get really good at it. And this is really important to the recovery journey, and that kind of leads us, segues us into our second point.
Yeah.
This is really important in the recovery journey, like Brad was talking about when we were struggling, because action is so important, right? Action is everything when it comes to the recovery journey, because if you don't take action, you don't get results. And you need that energy to create action. And we're not, we're not talking about like you feeling like, I feel great and I'm gonna take all this action. And we're not talking about you feeling like you're on top of the world. We're just talking about a little bit of energy in this case, right? So if you, if you can't create your own energy, then you can't take action. If you can't take action, you can't get results. So you don't continue to move forward. So it's really, really, really important to PTSD and to recovery That you're, you're creating your own energy, which will allow you to take action. And again, this is tricky in the beginning. And like we talked about in the, in the definition, by the application of force, but really, really important to get good at and to kind of integrate into your, into your lifestyle.
Yeah. You don't make the motivation. You don't make— I mean, sorry, sorry. You don't wait. You don't wait for a good day. You don't wait to be motivated, to get motivated. You make a good day. And you make yourself motivated by doing the work. And that was a big shift for me. Again, it comes back to that you always have the capability, you always have the choice to do this work and to create this energy, right? You don't wait around to create this energy. Like, you create this energy to have a good day. You know, you have the power to create a good day or a bad day, you know? And it's that choice that, you know, a lot of us don't like to admit that we have. that power to make that decision.
Right.
But it's that choice that really helped us day in and day out to get out of that dark place. That's right.
Yeah, it's really super, super important.
Yeah, and it's not supposed to be easy in the beginning. Nothing's gonna be easy in the beginning. That's just how life works. Yeah, skills, bills. I don't know where that came from.
Hills. It's gonna be challenging, but it is important that we create our own energy kind of day in and day out. And again, it gets easier with time. But that force is needed in the beginning to create the energy. So how do we create energy, Brad?
As Mr. Robbins says, motion creates emotion.
Mr. Robbins is Mr. Anthony Robbins.
He says that all the time.
I think it's hilarious. Yes, he says things like that all the time. He talks about state changes and movement is a key word that that I personally like that he uses and that we use is movement. You have to move, right? You have to kind of change your state. So changing your physical state, changing your mental state, that's kind of the idea behind it. And so how do we change our physical state, right? How do we create that energy? And there are a bunch of things that we talk about doing. And again, if you've seen the Depression Masterclass, you know I talk about a bunch of them, but we'll share a bunch of kind of our favorites here today. And one of my very favorites, and you'll hear me talk about this a lot, all the time, is to have a dance party. And this is something we still do. Right? And it's not— we're not doing this because, you know, we're waking up depressed or having, you know, bad days or anything. Now we do it to create like, like cherry on top kind of energy. But there's dance parties, right?
Yeah. Oh, Killeen is always, always dancing, and I'm always trying to dance with her too. I try to keep up.
He does.
It's hard to keep up with her. I do my best.
I've gotten him into dancing too now, and sometimes he'll dance and he'll make me get up and dance. Yeah, I'm like really tired, and he's like, come on. And, and so, so it's You know, creating motion. So a lot of motion-based things. And dancing, we're not talking about being— you know, I'm not a phenomenal dancer, Brad's not a phenomenal dancer. We're not talking about like salsa and like— you don't have to know how to dance, right? You just have to move your body. That's the important thing. And you can even do this seated, right? So you can even just kind of like move your torso around.
Do a little wiggle.
Do a little wiggle, right? And we talked about that last week as well, which is kind of why this is coming up here today. You know, so, so you have to kind of create your own energy, and you can do that by using motion, right? So we talk about PTT a lot, right? Plan tomorrow today. Make to-do lists and check off to-do lists and things like that. We talk about, you know, dancing, exercising. What are some of your favorites?
Exercise.
Stretching.
Exercise and stretching. I mean, every single morning I wake up with no energy, but every single morning I do an exercise, even on weekends. But I have a routine. So for me, it's it's going to the gym, either running or lifting, and that gets me that warms me up. That and I also listen to something positive too. And I like I like to think that like you have that physical energy, and you also have that mental energy that you're trying to create. That you're like. You're putting your brain and putting your mind into motion as well. But exercise, exercise and stretching, even if it's for like 5 minutes on a weekend, like it gets me, it gets me like, it like turns, turns me on. It like clicks something in my brain and I— Yeah, I wish I didn't say that, but I did and I'm just gonna move on with it. But the most important thing is that you, you create some kind of routine sometimes. Your little smile. Uh, some type of routine or system to create that motion, create that emotion, create that energy every single day. Because every, every day, you know, we don't wake up excited every day. We don't wake up happy every day. You know, you're like, I just want to go back to bed, even to this day. But those are the things that we forced our— we really had to force ourselves to do every day in the beginning. You know, when things are hard, when you really, really, really don't feel like doing absolutely anything. But those are the things that, you know, get you up, get you out, get you moving, get you taking action and doing the right things to recover.
Yeah, and I think that's a great point. And, um, you know, we don't wake up unhappy every day. I don't know if that's come off in the, in the opposite sense.
We wake up, yeah, tired.
Um, you know, when you get out of bed, you're tired, right? You have to create the energy to, um, you know, everyone wants to hit the snooze button, right? Um, so it is important to create your own energy, and it can be as simple as going for a walk outside or stretching, or it can be simple as just kind of forcing yourself, right? Forcing yourself to like stand up, like get it when your alarm goes off, to just like stand up and get out of bed instead of lay there and like contemplate it. Just like stand up and like stand for a minute, and that alone can kind of create your energy to go and do the next thing.
Right.
So really, really important to do things to create your energy. And you know, those are some things that we share that work for us. You know, we talk about In the Depression Masterclass, we talk about like the smile exercise and some like smaller exercises where, you know, if you like force yourself to smile, right? Again, force, force yourself to smile for 30 seconds in the mirror. You know, there's studies on that that show that you will, by the end of those 30 seconds, actually have a genuine smile and be happier and it'll lift your mood. And that's a way of creating energy too. And that sounds like if you're like in your head, if you're like, hey, that's That's like literally the most insane thing I've ever heard you say. Like, no. Yeah. Well, yeah.
Well, try it right now while you're watching, while you're listening, and just smile for 30 seconds.
30 seconds.
See how you feel.
And we'll tell you when to stop doing it.
You don't have to listen to us. Just try it.
Just try it.
Experiment.
I have people reach out all the time when I do those trainings that say, okay, that, that I call it the choice exercise, that smile exercise. I literally thought was, was total kind of BS, but I trusted you and I tried it. And it's actually amazing. And I really didn't think it would be. So like really, really try it. Like give it a try.
It sounds ridiculous.
Right. And it's, it's frustrating to do, especially when you feel like that, but give it a try and I promise you it will work for you. Yeah. Um, so we're probably approaching the 20-second mark for those of you doing it.
Um, if you actually—
super important, right? So those are the ways that, you know, we, we like to create energy, but you can kind of come up with your own. So our action for you today is, you know, to create your own energy. So whether you want to do one of our exercises and throw some, you know, dance music on or some jazz music and, and, you know, move around or jump around. I used to do this with my class when I was teaching. I used to make them jump around before the lesson to get the energy up, to get the participation up, to get the mood up in the room. Brad remembers.
Yep.
And, you know, create your own energy right now. So you can stop doing the smile if you're doing it now, and I bet you're probably smiling because you're like, that was ridiculous. And Come up with your own ways to create energy. So make sure you're doing something every morning, every day, every time you don't feel like you have energy, make sure you're doing something to create your own energy.
Mm-hmm.
You know, create your own energy force. Don't rely on other factors to give you energy or to create your energy for you. And use it to take action on your recovery. Now that's the other key— excuse me— important part here is use it to take action. Recovery is action-based and it's really, really, really, really, really, really, really important that we are taking action on our recovery journey. Because if you don't take action, you know, we're not gonna move forward. We're not gonna heal. We're not gonna grow. We're not gonna go anywhere, right? So this journey is possible. I promise you that no matter who you are, what you're going through, you can do this. But you are gonna have to take action. So that is kind of the key there.
Yeah.
So create your own energy, come up with your own exercises, or use ours to, to do that. And, you know, take action. Action on your recovery journey. So whether that's, you know, if we're already working together, you know, log back into the program and, and, and take action there. Or, you know, if we're not working together and you want to learn about the recovery journey or learn what you need to do, I, you know, I talk about the 3 pillars of recovery a lot. Go and watch the webinar, go watch the training. Use that— like, that is action that you need to take on your recovery journey. So use that energy to take action.
Yeah, also that webinar will give you that mental energy, that hope, That belief, that positive thinking that allows you to actually feel motivated. Because if, like I said in the beginning, like if you don't have that belief of a life after all of this, then like it's gonna be almost impossible to create that energy. So like if you have, if you feel like you're not really believing in yourself or in your recovery, go check out that training. And by the end of it, I swear to God, like you'll feel super, super motivated just because of all the positive inputs. And like, because we will never tell you that it's not possible. For anybody, because we know that it's possible for every single person. We've seen so many people do it. But the last thing I want to leave with you guys is, you know, find an activity, create an activity to help you create energy every single day, and create a system out of it and a routine out of it so you do it every single morning. So that means if you choose working out or stretching or yoga or whatever that is, write your routine down exactly and put your gym clothes out. For the morning, right? So know exactly what you're gonna do so you don't have to think about it in the morning. If it's a dance party, pick out your music, pick out your music playlist, have it on your phone. So right when you wake up, boom, I'm, I'm, uh, I'm gonna turn off my alarm and I'm gonna turn on this song and then I'm gonna have a little dance party when I wake up. So like create a system, create something that you won't mess up, that is pretty much idiot-proof. So like you're not gonna forget and you're not gonna miss it and make it as simple as possible. You're like, okay, snooze on.
Our whole life, Just to— so you all know, our whole life is idiot-proof. Like, for the most part, you know, minus some intellectual stuff, you could step into our life, follow our systems and routines, and do exactly what we do.
Yeah.
And that's the best way to live.
Yeah. It keeps you growing every single day.
Yeah.
And it keeps you doing the things that you want to do.
And it keeps your mind free, right? From all this mental energy like Brad was talking about. So Also, we have an alarm that turns on the radio, right? So it's a, it's a twofer. It's a twofer, right? It turns on the radio, so the music is what wakes you up, and you get to have a dance party. So if I get up fast enough, I can have a dance party before Brad shuts it off.
I'm pretty quick though.
He is pretty quick. So make sure you add something to your routine to turn yourself on every morning and create that energy and take action on your recovery each and every day. It's so important. Again, that mental and that physical energy, whether that's just listening to the podcast or listening to the music, um, or reading, you know, will create that mental energy too. And I know we didn't talk a lot about that, but also really, really, really important.
Yeah.
So, but that's what we have for you all today. Um, we're here for you. We believe in you. We love you. Thank you all for listening. If you're, if you're here on our social media, we'll stick around and answer some questions for those of you who have questions and have left some comments in there. And for those of you on our podcast, thank you so much for listening. We love you. If you want, if you want to, to be part of that Q&A, you can join us on our Facebook page or our Facebook group or our Instagram page at Overcoming PTSD. And, and that's what we'll do here today.
Yeah. Thank you guys for, for showing up.
So you can do this. We believe in you. We're here for you.
Yeah.
And remember to create that energy and take action.
Yeah. And have an awesome day, please.
Yeah. Have an awesome day. It's a great day to have a great day.
It's a great day to have a great day.
All right. Okay.
All right. Well, we'll see you guys tomorrow.
All right. Bye-bye.
Bye.
