Stop Looking Forward to the Promotion

Brian LaManna didn't understand what his Business Development Representative title meant when he started in tech sales. He offers three tips for his younger self about the early career mistakes he made and what he'd do differently.
Oh, imagine you, you would go back in time and like meet yourself like your younger self on the first day on the sales floor. What would you tell your younger Brian, your younger self, like what three tips would you give give that person?
I think the first is when I started I, I didn't know a lot about tech sales or even what my title really meant. Being a business development representative other than.
Sounds so cool, right? You're like consultant.
You're like, you know, if they had it as 100 cold calls a day plus 20 emails a day representative, I don't know if I would have signed up. So maybe it's a good thing. But I think given I didn't know that, I was trying to just kind of learn like the landscape of like promotions and path and I think I saw things really linearly for a pretty long time of like okay, you go from SDR to senior str, Senior STR to small business ae, small business AE to mid market ae, Mid market AE to enterprise. Enterprise. And then maybe you're a manager, manager to director. And while at, you know, to some degree it motivated me to look at the next role, I think looking back I, I was always really chasing the next role and I wasn't always like happy with where I was at or enjoying the journey.
