Brian LaManna offers succinct career advice for people exploring new roles or companies in tech sales: prioritize (1) genuine excitement about the product (based on research/website impressions) and (2) enthusiasm for the target buyer/audience you will sell to. He argues that if both excite you, career benefits like promotions and pay typically follow because you stay energized and improve daily.

So something I always recommend for folks looking into, like new roles or new companies is two things that I would always look for is like, number one, excitement around your own product from what you do research and the website that you're applying to or the company. Like, does that excite you? Do you want to learn more? Does that seem like something you would want to showcase and show off or just does it bore you? Just be honest with yourself and then who you sell to as well. I think it's really cognizant to be aware of, like, are you selling to it? Are you selling to cybersecurity? Are you selling to, you know, data professionals, sales leaders, things like that? Like, there's no right or wrong answer with any of those. But what you sell and who you sell to, if you're really excited and confident around both of those and they excite you and make you want to learn more. Like, things like the promotions, the money, the career path, like, typically that'll follow if you're just really enthused and energized by getting better each day and coming to work and the days flying by.
