Brigid Titgemeier explains how fiber changes which calories your body absorbs. Two people eating the same meal might absorb different amounts depending on their gut bacteria. A study found that people on a high-fiber diet excreted about 100 extra calories in stool.

A recent study also showed that fiber consumption has the ability to decrease the amount of calories that you actually absorb. So 2 people could eat the same number of calories in a meal, but one may only absorb 70% of those calories, and then another person absorbs 100%. And this is entirely based on your gut microbiome composition, which are those bugs that are living inside of you. And I remember the first study that I had read in like 2017 or 2018 that really highlighted how much the gut microbiome plays a role in our ability to lose weight because of caloric absorption. But this particular study was a randomized controlled trial that showed that a diet higher in fiber led to fewer calories that were absorbed. The amount of calories that the person essentially lost through stool was about 100 calories on the high fiber diet. So this is fascinating. Just by eating more fiber in your diet, you're supporting these microbes that help to excrete calories that you would otherwise be absorbing.
