If you're exploring downtown Las Vegas and want to experience a slice of Hawaiian history, the Market Street Cafe inside California Hotel is a classic stop. Since 1975, this 24-hour diner has catered to Hawaiian travelers and longtime locals, helping downtown Vegas earn the nickname the Ninth Island. It's known for island-style comfort food like loco moco, Spam and eggs, fried gyoza, and its most famous dish, oxtail soup. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try the oxtail soup because it's only served between 11 PM and 6 AM. Very odd hours for your signature dish. I sampled several dishes, and while the portions were generous, the flavors were, dare I say, bland. It's more in line with a senior crowd that's been coming here for decades. Nostalgic, yes, but not especially exciting. Still, the cafe's longstanding role in Vegas Hawaiian culture makes it worth knowing about, even if just for the story. Follow for more honest Las Vegas reviews and unfamiliar finds.
