What to look for when buying a pool table for a short term rental

Shopping for a pool table for a short-term rental isn't just about fun; it's a strategic amenity choice. Data shows that amenities play a major role in booking decisions, with Airbnb reporting that over 90% of travelers choose where to stay based on amenities like pool tables. Guests actively filter listings based on entertainment features like game rooms, which help properties stand out, especially for groups like family reunions, and bachelor and bachelorette trips. A pool table in particular checks multiple boxes. It's social, it photographs well, and it gives the guests something to do late at night without leaving the house, which is huge for making positive memories associated with the house, thereby gaining more positive reviews. It's also a plus because the sound stays inside, which keeps your neighbors happy. Now here's the mistake a lot of hosts make. Buying a cheap brand new pool table. I've done it. I paid about $550 for a new one on Amazon and I regretted it. Lower cost new tables are often top heavy with flimsy legs, which is a bad combination when you remember that short-term rental guests are often inebriated and love leaning on things. A used high quality table is usually the better move. Older slate tables or commercial grade models are heavier sturdier, and designed to take abuse. For a different house, I picked up a used one on Facebook Marketplace for $625, and it's been far more stable and durable. When shopping used, look for a solid frame, no leg wobble, firm rails, and ideally a slate bed. Minor felt wear is normal and fixable. A full refelting will set you back between $250 and $500. Bottom line, for short-term rentals, durability beats brand new every time. And a good pool table can absolutely help your listing attract more bookings and better reviews.
