Synopsis of the book "Stall Points: Most Companies Stop Growing — Yours Doesn't Have To" (Matthew S. Olson and Derek van Bever, Yale Univ. Press, 2008), presented as an Omnicom University Yellow Page (April 2009). Based on a quantitative study of ~400 corporations (including firms that were in the Fortune 100 since 1955) and in-depth analysis of 50 representative organizations, the authors report that 87% of firms experienced a growth "stall", most causes (87%) were within managers' control, and recovery was uncommon. The synopsis identifies the typical stall pattern, four primary causes (premium-position captivity; innovation management breakdown; premature core abandonment; talent bench shortfall), outlines surveillance and managerial responses, and references an online diagnostic survey.
