A contracts manager in construction needs three things: deep knowledge of every contract term, hands-on site experience to see how clauses actually work, and the judgment to negotiate only what matters to your business instead of fighting every clause.
Chapters
To be the best contracts manager, you need 3 skills. The first one is to obviously understand what each term in the contract actually means and the implications of each term. The second thing is you need a practical understanding of whatever it is you're doing. If you're in construction, what actually happens on site and how these clauses relate to that. That's really important. That's where lawyers fall over so much because they don't understand how a clause actually plays out in real life. If you can do that, it makes a huge difference. And the last thing that's important is what actually doesn't matter. Are you trying to negotiate something that in your type of business doesn't actually matter. If that's the case, don't bother. Either just get rid of it completely or just don't bother trying to negotiate because you know it's never gonna happen and concentrate on something else.
