A subcontractor is owed over £900,000 with payment delayed two months, while the general contractor demands more work and speaks rudely. The speaker argues that giving in to this bullying reinforces it. The subcontractor must refuse further work until paid to stop the abuse and be treated professionally.

Narcissism is real in construction. So I'm currently dealing with an issue where a subcontractor is owed over £900,000. It's 2 months late and the general contractor is telling them to do more work, asking them to do more work, to obviously they're saying no to. And the way that they're speaking to them is absolutely absurd. It's so rude, it's so narcissistic, the way they actually think that they can tell them to do whatever they want to do and they're going to do it. The thing is, if you buy into that, if you allow yourself to be bullied, to be pushed around like that, they will keep doing it. It's only when you push back contractually to say, no, you haven't paid me, I'm not doing this, you're in all of these things, they think that you're more professional and they don't treat you that way.
