Construction subcontractors don't fail from lack of work. They fail because they do the work but don't get paid on time. When clients delay payments, approve change orders slowly, or both, subcontractors end up financing their clients out of pocket until cash runs dry.

Construction subcontractors rarely die from a lack of work. What they actually die from, they go out of business for, is doing too much work without getting paid fast enough. They've actually done the work, they've not got paid until down the line. It's cash flow that is the killer in construction. It's not getting paid, it's like I'm not getting the money in quick enough because of the contract that I've signed, the payment terms that I've signed up for, and also the slowness of the clients when I've done additional work, and then all of a sudden I've submitted my variation, it's taken them a month to approve the variation, and I have to pay 30 days later. You become this financing company for your client, and then becomes very, very hard, and ultimately you get strangled by a lack of cash flow, and you ultimately go out of business.
