Navigating Life with Ease – What Seeking Means from a 3 Principles Perspective

A podcast conversation (Clare Downham & Michaela Ellis) exploring the concept of 'seeking' from a 3 Principles perspective. The hosts argue that people universally seek peace of mind but mistakenly look for it externally; instead peace is described as an innate, internal state that repeatedly reveals itself when we notice and stop chasing. The episode covers personal examples, metaphors (sump pump), and practical observations about noticing and resetting.

Hello. Welcome.
How are you?
I'm good. How are you doing?
Good, Very good.
Good.
I have a word, I have a word for you. So the word, today's word is seeking.
Yeah. Don't we all go down that path, seeking for all kinds of things that we never find out there? Yeah, yeah, yeah. What comes to mind for seeking is, you know, the, the seeking of what am I here for? Who am I? You know, how and more these.
For.
Things that are already built into us. But looking outside, like, it's really great to. I was going to say how to, you know and like YouTube can be really great for, for getting how to's on, you know, on how to fix your carburetor in your vehicle, but the how to's for, you know, that we often look for or, or why or those kinds of things that relate to us personally, that we're trying to relate to it personally or thinking that we need to be different so we seek out, you know, the. Right. Yeah, I, I see it as a never ending thing. I mean, isn't that what we are doing here is helping people realize that the answers that they're looking for, to have a life that feels more easeful, where with relationships that feel more peaceful, you know, where we can, where, where you can be in a place where. Life does feel more satisfying, that it's not out there, it's not. We can't get it from somewhere outside of us. It's cool to access something like this to help show you where your answers are. I do it, I seek. You know, I have coaches and a podcast or various things that I might be drawn to, engage with or listen.
To.
That can help me find my way back to me. That can remind me. Oh yeah, right. Seeking for the answers or the easy way. That's one of my traps is looking for the easy way. I seek the easy way. It's like, where's the easy button? I know it's there and it's just like the easy button is not out.
There.
You know, and it's not necessarily easy, but it's super, super simple. Coming from this, you know, when we can have a quiet mind. A seeking mind from my personal experience is freaking noisy and loud and judgy and compare and blamey, You know, I can seek for because you know, I do that. I'm truly interested in how the mind works and why we choose what we do. And I can catch patterns and that kind of stuff and it, it stimulates me. It's like, oh yeah, look at that. But going down the path of trying to, you know, fix it all and change it all from that energy, it's, it's a never ending seeking path of exhaustion and dissatisfaction. Yeah. And we fall in and out of it, right? Being human, we'll get lost down that track of seeking outside. And then, ah, like feel. Oh yeah, right when we remember, we, when we remember what we're really made of, what we're capable of, what you.
Know, living through us.
It's like, oh, what we're seeking thing. Energetic vibrational experience we experience through the body. And when we fall back into that remembering when it comes to us. Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. Then it's like, right. It's like the mind clears the you know, grasping, desperate seeking, you know, stops. I still might hear something that. It's like, oh yeah, there's something in that. I'm gonna go check that out. And then, you know, you learn to discern what is helpful and then leave the rest, you know. Yeah, yeah. Releasing this path that I kind of get caught on and then unhook myself from it again and then I get caught on it again. But it's less, it's less. You spend less time in that hooked in kind of place where it's all out there. And it's so funny because the more that I will feel insecure, the more I want to run out there and seek. I want to write, try different things. And maybe I should listen to that again or maybe I should go there, I should buy that. And then I remember again. It's like, oh yeah, it's funny this in and out. Yeah. Tell me about seeking from your perspective today.
I just loved it at the end. You said, you just said it's in and out. That's really, that's really the issue, isn't it? That this, the sea. I mean ultimately human beings are seeking one thing and that's peace of mind. Now not everybody would probably call it that. I think people would call that different things. They might call it contentment or happiness or just mental, well, being, I suppose people might call it that. That's all we ever want really. And you wouldn't know it to look at the world, people who were blowing each other's countries up and goodness knows what else, people hurting each other and hurting themselves. You would think that that was the last thing people wanted. And that's really ironic, isn't it? Because it, that is really what they want. Because people believe that doing that thing in the world will bring them the peace that they're seeking. And that's the outside in. You know, when you said in and out, it's. That's the outside in confusion really or misunderstanding. There are peace is available out there, when it just isn't. We will keep looking for it out there whileever we believe that it is out there. That's what I did in the run up to Burnout. I definitely, well innocently thought that if I did enough stuff in the outside world, if I was successful enough, if I did the right activities, if I found the right man, that I would, you know, I would be okay. And then I took that seeking in tune the self development world and then spiritual in the spiritual world. And yeah, you're right. Having some things that we listen to that are pointing in this direction that are guiding us to see the truth, which is that that piece that we're looking at for outside of us never, never has been and never will be outside of us. It's not there. They will never find it there because it just isn't there. But whatever we think it's out there, we will continue to do that thing that perhaps isn't entirely helpful or entirely healthy for us or the planet or other humans or whatever else. So it's all really innocent. It just moves us all the time that the feeling seeking that feeling is just the inner driver of a human being. That is what being human actually is, is seeking. It's just we just keep looking in the wrong direction. We should be like turning around and looking in, but we don't. We go out into the world with an attempt to find peace and it ain't there. So it's exhausting. It exhausted me in the end, you know. And I think I've been making some meditations for insight timer and the, the recent set I've just made, which is why this subject came to mind. They're all about and ending the seat, the seeking of peace, you know, and the meditations are at the beginning all about like settling the people down. Because obviously people are coming to meditate, are already quite stirred up and then you know, once they feel peace, basically saying the Meditation didn't do this. This is already within you. It isn't. It isn't coming from the meditation and just repeatedly kind of pointing them to that. And we can. And we can see that, can't we, in our lives that our circumstances don't actually have to change. And we can go from being, you know, really upset and, you know, wound up about something to not really being that bothered by it literally, in a very, you know, literally in a second, in a very short space of time. I've seen that for myself so many times where, you know, somebody else's behavior or something that's happening or something that's happened to me or something, something said to me or whatever can just seem like, yeah, the end of the world almost. And then suddenly it doesn't. And nothing's change. My mind is found. Yeah. There's a quieter. There's a quieter place within me. Things have just settled down. And whatever it was, the thinking about whatever it was, the feelings about, whatever it was just passed. Just pass through because we don't have to do anything about that because that's the other thing. Our system is continually resetting back to peace. Yeah. Need to seek it. You can just watch your system resolve it, you know, from a place of noticing, from a place of observation. I just had a message from a client of mine who had been. She'd been listening to a podcast. Not our podcast, need to have a word of it, but she'd be listening to something. And she said that the podcast had been playing on. And after about five minutes, she realized she hadn't listened. Heard a single word of the podcast because she open to, you know, into her head about what she has to do today and what's going on and blah, blah. But she noticed. And that's all we can ever do, really, is. Yeah, maybe just notice when we're seeking, when we think it's out there, when we think the resolution to the feeling is out there. Can't. Can't do much more than that.
Yeah.
Can't force it. Send you back into seeking.
I see that the longer I'm, you know, I'm. I'm in this understanding, embedded in it and willing to look in that way and to remember that, oh, I'm gonna forget and then I'll remember again. And it just. I don't know what it was something you said and I thought about like a sump pump and, you know, we've been getting a lot of rain here in Alberta and I'm betting there are places where they have A sump pump, which is, you know, a pump. And it's usually in the basement. And it's like there's a set point that when the, when the water gets up to a certain point, it automatically turns on and what I find, you know, and then it'll suck the, the, you know, the water out. Now we're not like sucking the thoughts out of our mind, right? But what happens is to me, what I notice is that the set point gets lower and lower. So when I get all caught up in my mind, I'll typically the point is lower. So I usually don't go like, I don't go down the path of crazy town as far or deep as I used to where I'll catch it. And then it's just like. And just the catching it is like the, it's like opening the valve up for the thoughts to like, okay, fall away, you know, and then it's like, right? And coming back into that quiet place, you know, where there's a knowing already there. Already there to show us. It's not even a showing. It really is like just a knowing, isn't it? And we all have it, but we might not, you know, put our finger on it, but just knowing that it's there and like being open to like, let's see it. Let's see where it's already been showing up in your life, all your life, right? Each of us in a, in a way, in a, in a certain way of a feeling. And we. You recognize it. Yeah.
I wonder why we miss it. Like when you start encouraging you. If we work with people and we're encouraging them to notice these moments when the peace is just there, you know, it's. Don't need to do anything. It just happens. And, and sometimes it can be in the most tricky situations. And I wonder why. We tend to focus on the times when we don't see it, don't we?
Yeah, I would. I'm gonna hazard a guess that, you know, it's kind of a fear based thing. Oh, I need to do something about that because, you know, otherwise isn't that just sticking my head in the sand and ignoring the problem? It's like, no, it's. It's actually opening up to solutions that you maybe couldn't get there on your own. Maybe you can, but it's a lot of effort. If you open up, there'll be something that feels right in the body. It's like, oh, yeah, that often it's much simpler than when we try to find an answer to something. Or a solution to what we're perceiving as a problem. It's like way simpler. But yeah, you know, our, our physical, the material world is so comp. You know, I'm looking at it and you know, I don't know why I had this flash of, you know, I was around when we had black and white TV and a color TV was simple, you know, so, you know, I mean just movement on a screen was compelling and then when color was added, it was just like more compelling. Now we have video and movies in color and everything happening right in front of us can be very compelling to look out there, to get caught in that. And then we always have another moment where, where we can feel like.
You'Ll.
Get a sense of. And if you're really present in that moment, you might catch your body going. And Reese, I love the word that you said about resetting because our body is resetting all the time without us even knowing it. It's working behind the scenes to help us out and when we can catch it with our attention. Ah, it's like we can be more in that place where we're not having to get to a point where we have to take a break, get a. You know, I mean taking a break is. We're always going to do that. It's natural. It's natural. But it's not going to be in a place of oh my gosh, I'm so overwhelmed. It'll just come sooner. Yeah. So it's not something to even try not to do. This. This is it. This isn't a stop seeking. That's not that. It's just kind of noticing it. Noticing how you are looking part you stop.
You just stop when it makes sense.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Bruce and I gratitude journals every day for years. And I remember not long after we came across the principals, we were sat on the sofa together doing them and I said why, why are we doing this again? This is nothing against gratitude journals, but. And he went, I don't know. Shall we, shall we stop?
Then.
Stopped. Cold turkey. We just. Because suddenly it just didn't make sense anymore. Just fell away as a thing for us to do. It was quite. Yeah. And, and a lot of the kind of tools and techniques and self development stuff that I was doing before I came across this understanding. They, they went similarly. I just sort of went, oh, I don't need to do, I don't need to do that to try and feel okay now. I don't have to find peace that way. That's not needed. And it just was a gradual. Yeah. Because it just didn't make sense anymore. And that. Yeah, right. That it's very easy to hear this as.
Right.
Well, I need to stop seeking now. And that's going to be my new.
Mission is to seek the end of.
Seeking like a time in a right not. It's just as you see the truth that this. This piece is here in you. It isn't out there. It makes less and less sense to chase it. My favorite quote on this is Jack Pransky's all we are is peace, love and wisdom and the ability to create the illusion that we are not. It's probably one of my favorite 3P quotes is that one says it says it exactly. Exactly Right.
Very good, Claire. Thank you.
Yeah, thank you. That was a nice. I hope people found that helpful. Yeah.
I did. Until next time.
Absolutely. Take care. Bye. Ciao.
